Bill Vaskis

Dear Editor:
I am compelled to write to emphasize
how special Bill Vaskis was and how important he was to me personally.
I tookIntroduction to History and Social Sciences course with Bill in my freshman year at Claremont High, and it was
probably the first class where I took extensive notes, since he offered an opennote final exam. Our class was loud, engaging and interesting. I had some serious
issues that year, and Bill was there for me.
He had heard about my situation and
called me at home to talk with me about it
and tell me not to worry, he was going to
be there for me. It was a big deal for me at
that time.
In both my junior and senior years I
took the Directed Readings class meeting
weekly with students in Bills home in the
evening over a potluck dinner. We read
widely and had challenging discussions.
While there was never any real doubt
about Bills personal opinion on a topic,
he was very capable of playing devils advocate to shake up a discussion where
there might not be enough diversity of
opinion. I think I attended an annual party
he held for about 10 years after I graduated from CHS.
When I returned to Claremont, I had the
pleasure of seeing Bill as a senior auditor
when he took classes at Pomona College. He and I still wrote one another occasional emails, and last year I had the
great pleasure of giving him a tour of the
new Millikan Building along with one of
my own former students. The tour was
special since he was important to me, and
I was important to the student, so the synergy was very sweet.

Back in 2005, Bill sent out an email trying to compile a list of all the books read
over the years in the Directed Readings
class. I dont know how complete the version I have is, but I share it with you as it
captures Bill both in his personal style and
in his academic leadership.
I am pleased that Bill was able to be active up to the end. He loved soccer and
concerts and was always able to be
provocative and entertaining in a way that
I appreciated. I will always remember him
as someone who made a difference.

No Nobel for Vera

Dear Editor:
I see in the news that physicist-astronomer Vera Rubin died on Christmas
day. Her passing, without ever having received the Nobel Prize in physics, says
less about her than it does about the irrelevance of the committees in Stockholm.
Her work on straightforward measurements of galactic rotation opened up the
field of dark matter about which we hear
so much and know so little. The quantity
of research in that area has gone beyond
flood-stage in the past decade or so. Her
work made questions in this whole new
field of physics respectable.
I'll leave questions about the relevance
of the Nobel committees to others, but can
you name any of the the Nobel Prize recipients in the past five years, except for
Bob Dylan? Me neither.

Making way for the

Pomona College
Museum of Art
green fence surrounds a group of cottages that are scheduled to be demolished this month to make way for a new
museum.

COURIER photos/Steven Felschundneff

The residential cottages on the corner of Bonita and College avenues are surrounded by a construction fence in preparation for their demolition on Tuesday in Claremont. The demolition is the
first step in the planned construction of Pomona Colleges new art museum.

The demolition is part of the plan for the upcoming

Pomona College Museum of Art, which will occupy the
block that also houses the historic Renwick House. Renwick
will be moved across the street, according to the plan.
The museum has been a hot topic in Claremont since the
plans were adopted earlier last year, and a group calling

themselves Citizens to Save College Avenue

filed a lawsuit against the city and Pomona College in an effort to block or delay construction.
The group filed a preliminary injunction to stop
demolition of the cottages until a ruling is handed
down. That injunction was denied on November

18, according to the city.

The demolition process will last throughout the
month, and the barrier will come down on January
18. A second barrier that will protect the trees in
the immediate area will be up until January 20.

City aims to reinstate human relations committee

laremont wants to reboot its Committee on

Human Relations,
months after an anti-Muslim
letter shocked the community.
The Community and Human Services Commission voted unanimously
Wednesday evening to recommended
restarting the committee, which was
dissolved in 2013 after a lack of a quorum. The recommendation will now be
sent to the city council for review.
If approved by the council, the committee will be comprised of Paul Buch,
Ellen Taylor, Lauren Roselle, Rose Ash
and Michael Edwards.
The committee in its first incarnation
was created in 1996, as a way for the

city to promote education and human

relations in the community. After a
while, however, the committee was directionless and routinely lacked a quorum, according to Human Services
Director Anne Turner.
In 2013, it was closed by thenHuman Services Director Kathleen
Trepa in favor of the Human Relations
Community Response Team (HRCRT),
an action committee focused solely on
helping people who were victims of
hate crimes. Much of the hate crimes
reported in Claremont in the years since
took place at the Colleges, however,
and their own support structure rendered the action committee irrelevant.
The training was good, but there
wasnt really any galvanizing event,
Ms. Turner said.

ELECTION CALENDAR
Councilmember Corey Calaycay
will host his reelection kick-off
party from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday,
January 8 at El Ranchero Restaurant, 984 W. Foothill Blvd. in Claremont. Light refreshments will be
served. Everyone is welcome but
guests should RSVP to Veronica at
(909) 908-4886 by Friday, January

6. For information, visit coreycalaycay.com.

Councilmember Larry Schroeders
kick-off party will take place at the
Ginger Elliot Exhibition Center at
the Garner House, 840 N. Indian Hill
Blvd., on Sunday, January 8 from
3:30 to 5:30 p.m. All are welcome.

That changed when the Islamic Center of Claremont (ICC) received a hateful anti-Muslim letter in November
2016. ICC was one of many mosques
and Islamic centers in the country that
received the note, which sent shockwaves throughout the nation as well as
Claremont.
After the incident, members of the
committee and the Community and
Human Services Commission, as well
as Claremont Police Chief Shelly Vander Veen, Captain Aaron Fate and Ms.
Turner, met to discuss how to help
Claremonts marginalized residents.
They wanted to get back together
and kind of see whats happening and
talk about whats going on, Ms. Turner
said.
The decision was made to do away
with the HRCRT and reboot the Committee on Human Relations, comprised
of HRCRT members Mr. Buch and Ms.
Roselle and community members Ms.
Taylor, Ms. Ash and Mr. Edwards.
To prevent the ineffectiveness that
beset the previous committee, Ms.
Turner has tasked the committee to
come up with a plan for the next year
on what to do in times of crisis as well
as normalcy.
If the committee is approved at the
next council meeting, members will
have until the March Community and
Human Services Commission meeting
to come up with a plan and present it.
Monthly benchmark goals will also
be established, Ms. Turner said, regarding issues such as the duties and prac-

tices of Claremont police officers in regards to immigration.

Itll be on a city-wide level, looking
at executing on the values of the city of
Claremont, she said. The city of
Claremont being inclusive, the city of
Claremont celebrating diversity.
She also mentioned that the police
department would be working with the
committee as partners in the new venture.
They are excited to be our partners
in this, which I think is a different place
than we were before, Ms. Turner said.

he commission approved the plans to be

sent to the council, and
Chair Butch Henderson noted
that it took an incident at ICC
to drum up the need for the
committee, and he will look at
how the committee will continue its efforts during downtime.
The only reason we got together this
time was the temple incident, thats it; a
galvanizing incident and some residue
of the recent election. Were not going
to have a galvanizing incident every
few months, he said. What Im going
to be looking at iswhat are they really going to come back with that guarantees we wont have another fizzle-out
of the human relations committee?

spotted recently in north
Claremont, was left at the
curb but is not eligible for the
citys recycling program due to
the flocking. The trees are turned
into mulch so they must be
placed at the curb completely
bare, without tinsel, flocking or a

POLICE BLOTTER

Wednesday, December 21
A Rancho Cucamonga man was arrested one day after a home invasion in
Claraboya. About four people were in the
home on the 700 block of Valparaiso when
the burglar, identified as 22-year-old Max
Martinez, reportedly entered the home
wearing a black ski mask just after 7 p.m.,
according to Cpl. Isaac Reyes of the Claremont Police Department. The thief made
off with a number of items, including a
computer monitor, before fleeing the
home. At least one victim in the house
confronted the thief before he fled. Surveillance cameras captured the getaway
car, which was traced to a home in Rancho Cucamonga. Mr. Martinez was arrested at the house when officers arrived
on December 22.
Thursday, December 22
Police are looking for burglars who
broke into a home on the 500 block of
Pomello Avenue between 5:41 and 5:47
a.m. The thieves smashed a rear glass door
and ransacked the master bedroom, Cpl.
Reyes said. Surveillance footage caught
them leaving, but the thieves were only described as wearing dark-colored hoodies,
one with a cover on the lower part of his
face. They got away in a light-colored
sedan. About $1,000 in jewelry and
watches was taken from the home.
Friday, December 23
Just before 8 p.m., a purple Scion tC
driven by 28-year-old Aireen Macatula of
Baldwin Park crashed into a white Honda
Accord near Indian Hill Boulevard and the
10 Freeway. Ms. Macatula told police she
had lost control of her vehicle. Police said
she was displaying symptoms of alcohol
intoxication. The driver of the Honda complained of pain to their neck, but was not
transported to the hospital. Ms. Macatula
was arrested for DUI causing injury.
Sunday, December 25
A homeowner discovered a naked man

in his garage on Christmas night. The

shocking encounter happened on the 200
block of Cucamonga Avenue around 9:45
p.m., when the homeowner walked into
the garage and saw a man sitting in his car,
Cpl. Reyes said. The homeowner yelled at
the man to get out, and the man reportedly
kept yelling, Im hallucinating, Im hallucinating. The man eventually gathered
his clothes and walked out of the garage
door and into the night, still in the buff. Police canvassed the area, but could not find
the man. He was described as a Caucasian
or Hispanic male in his 30s or 40s, with a
slim build, thinning dark or black hair and
a partial beard and moustache.
Monday, December 26
Police are looking for a burglary suspect
who left a trail of blood after an attempted
break-in. The blood trail was first found at
the intersection of Towne and Scripps Avenues, and police determined it came from
a broken window at a building on the 900
block of west Base Line Road. The blood
trail continued south all the way to Foothill
Boulevard, and ended at a trailer park on
the 200 block of Foothill in Pomona. According to witnesses, the suspect claimed
he was robbed, and he was transported to
Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center,
where he was released before officers arrived. He is still at large, but police are not
releasing information on him. Anyone
with leads should call the police.
****
A Duarte man was arrested twice in two
days, once for drug charges and resisting
arrest during a traffic stop and another for
prowling in a back yard. Police pulled over
a car driven by 25-year-old Anthony Edwards for expired tags around 9:20 p.m.
Mr. Edwards initially gave a false name to
police, which rang up as being on felony
probation. When officers asked Mr. Edwards to step out of the car, he took off,
heading south on Towne Avenue before
jumping over a wall and into the backyard

of a home on the 1100 block of Morningside, Cpl. Reyes said. Officers followed
and arrested him. During an investigation
police found meth and drug paraphernalia
and determined Mr. Edwards was under
the influence of narcotics. He was arrested
again in the same neighborhood shortly
after being released from jail. Around 10
a.m., a witness said Mr. Edwards and another man were in her backyard. Mr. Edwards told police he was looking for a cell
phone he lost the previous night. He was
arrested on suspicion of prowling. The
other man, 26-year-old Aries McDaniels of
Eastvale, initially gave a false ID to police
and had a no-bail warrant out for his arrest.
Thursday, December 29
Goods were stolen from a home on the
200 block of west Seventh Street sometime between 8 a.m. on December 28 and
1 p.m. on December 29. The burglars entered through a kitchen window and ransacked the house, getting away with $2000
in jewelry and an $800 laptop.
****
A Rosemead man was arrested after
leaving the scene of a car accident at Harrison and Mountain Avenues just before 11
p.m. After the crash, 22-year-old Christopher Ramos reportedly left the scene and
was not found by police. The occupants in
the other car were transported to Pomona
Valley Hospital with unknown injuries.
The next day, Mr. Ramos walked into the
Claremont police station to report his car
as stolen, Cpl. Reyes said. Mr. Ramos later
admitted to being behind the wheel of the
car and he was arrested.
Sunday, January 1
The first police report of 2017 was a
drunk in public arrest. Around 2:18 a.m.,
a witness flagged down an officer on
Cornell Avenue regarding an intoxicated
woman, Cpl. Reyes said. When police arrived, they determined that 31-year-old
Mandy Zimmerle was incapacitated, so
she was transported to CPD jail to sober
up. Happy New Year, Claremont.

CITY NEWS

Eight questions for eight candidates: Abraham Prattella

And I believe theres a disconnect because the bureaucracy of how government works here in Claremont. We should have a different kind of channel for
them. We should have a campaign leader for them
who would speak on behalf of the universities. We
kind of do, but we dont. Theres no additional privilege for them. Theyre the revenue makers for us.
Theres so much that they do for Claremont and they
are not given enough credit for that. So we need to
definitely build a channel for them.

braham Prattella is one of eight

people running for Claremont
City Council. A realtor and former
pastor, Mr. Prattella has called Claremont
home for more than 25 years. Now, hes
running for city council as a way to give
back to the community.
Why are you running for city council?
In my heart, I really just want to give back at a different level. For the past 15 years, it was never really
about me. My heart has been
COUNCIL
transformed and I want to pour
ELECTION
into others. I started a company
here in Claremont in 2008. We made it from a small
to a nationwide company and sold it in 2011, with the
majority of the funds given back to the people of the
city. I kind of want to do it on a different level. Thats
where Im at, really, just to give back and use all my
skills Ive been developing to move forward.
A big story right now is the water trial. Recently a
judge ruled against Claremonts quest to claim
eminent domain over the water system, and there
are murmurs of an appeal. Do you think the city
should go forward and appeal?
It looks like Golden State Water has a monopoly, so
theres really no option but to appeal it. Either way
its going to help us to appeal. Meanwhile, we have to
fight the PUC (Public Utilities Commission) because
theyre allowing the monopoly to keep the rates high.
We all have to join hands with Region 3 to fight the
PUC as option B. It may not look good, but we may
have no other option.
In 2015, voters rejected Measure PS, a $50 million
police station bond. Afterward, an ad hoc committee was convened to create a new plan for a possible police station, and it will appear on the June
2017 ballot. Do you agree with the ad hoc committees findings? Do you think it will be good for
Claremont?
I think it was improperly displayed as far as real
options. If we really knew what the cost was, then we
might have passed this measure to begin with. When
we have more safety, the value of Claremont goes up.
The values of homes go up. The values of schools go
up. The long-term return on investment is going to increase everything all around it. I would definitely redevelop the outdated system we have. How can we be
a city that flourishes in technology and safety if we do
not have the technology that we need, or the enforcement that we need or the equipment? I definitely
agree with the committees decision to invest, to rebuild the station and expand technology, 100 percent.
Nobody wants to raise taxes. We have lots of seniors here and their checks are penny-by-penny. So, to
raise property taxes would jeopardize them. To raise
the utility tax would really hurt them. But we can definitely cut costs somewhere. I have some solid plans
that would increase revenue in the city without affecting the current consumer or the current resident here
in Claremont. But we need to redevelop our police
station. We have to prepare for future issues, and right
now were not prepared for it.
People have expressed that Claremont is becoming
too commercialized, too corporate, and that its
losing its small-town feel. Do you agree with that?
As far as the commercialization of the businessesold Claremont, old downtown ClaremontI
love it as a culture. New Claremont is modernized,
but I dont think its too commercialized. I do feel
theres a spiritual vibe of the culture kind of diminishing. I believe its because the city is trying to bring in

COURIERphotos/Steven Felschundneff
City council candidate Abraham Prattella.

revenue, so theyre bringing in big businesses.

We want to redevelop. As a business owner here on
Foothill Boulevard, when you look at the entry points
on Arrow and Foothill coming in to Claremont, its
like youre still in Pomona or Upland for the first few
minutes until you get to the heart of it. The value of
business has declined because of the aesthetics and
the feel of the entry points.
If were able to redevelop those entry points,
youre going to have more businesses that want to be
there, which will increase the rents and increase sales.
They feel like theyre in Claremont stillwhich is all
going downtown, where were limited as far as space.
I would definitely redevelop those areas, which
would increase business sales and taxes for the city
and create income there.
A lot of people have complained about the crowds
at the Wilderness Park. What can you do to manage that?
People might not pass [entry fees for non-residents]. But people want to move here because you get
all these free leisurely activities. They may not like to
pay a fee outside of the city, but were here for our
city. Were here to take care of our people first. If its
going to help reduce the noise and pollution there or
reduce crowds, thats fine. Its not going to hurt us as
Claremont. There are no businesses up there, so
youre not hurting business. If anything, youre going
to tax those who are not currently residents or business owners here in Claremont. Im all for that, 100
percent.
Is the relationship between town and gown fractured? If so, what can you do to improve it?
I do agree with that, 100 percent. Three of the highest cost universities in the nation are in Claremont.
Harvard and Yale are paying way less. Why? Because
theres good reciprocation between the universities
and the cities. Theres good funding. The universities
are the heart of Claremont. We need to be their voice
for them. We bring in students. We bring in business.
We bring in ideas and fresh energy and we need to get
them involved.

Do you think the city is making an appropriate

effort toward sustainability and, if not, what more
do you think they can do?
When I think of sustainability, I think of preserving
Claremont. Its not really my motto, but its called the
4-G solutionfour generations to come and beyond.
Right now I have my parents, myself and my kids
thats three generations. Pretty soon Im going to have
four generations, the generation coming on, so we
have to maintain the city for them. We dont want to
say, Back in my day it was better. We want to say,
Its better now than before. Thats the ultimate goal.
We really need to develop as far as clean energy solutions. We need to worry about water-tolerant ideas.
With the natural habitat, talking about the bee
colonies, for example. In America, 50 percent of bees
have to be colonized in California. Were the city of
trees, this is what were all about. So why arent we
leading this bee colony issue?
But on the financial level, we need to make sure
that were budgeting properly. In the next two or three
years, were showing a big decline in revenue. We
need to prepare for that. We cant continue the same
thing and expect change.
We have to really bring in top leaders, invest in
bringing in teams to come in and help us properly.
Right now in my corporation, I have four of the top
financial people I have ever met and known. Theyre
always giving guidance and protecting my investments in all that I do. I look to them. I need to bring in
the top people and figure it out. How are we going to
develop this and build this? I dont think Claremont is
doing that.
Were a small town, so if you properly plan, it
should take more time to plan than to execute. Were
not properly planning, and the problem I see is theres
a disconnect between the city and the people. Only a
few people are a part of it. Not everyones fully involved and not everything is being fully disclosed.
We need to be transparent and let the people really
decide.
If you had a magic wand, what is the one thing
you would change about Claremont?
I love Claremont. If I had a magic wand, I would
want to fully fund all that we want to do, ultimately.
Thats really what it comes down to: Everyone being
able to afford what they are affording and have what
they have here. I love the culture and the heritage.
Claremont is amazing. I cant talk bad about it.
I pastored a church for many years, and I have all
this experience. If I can really give value, Id give
people purpose and quality of life instantly. Thats
what it comes down toquality of life and purpose.

Taking a leap into theater

by John Pixley

id I have the right theater? Thats

what I was thinking. It was like I
had gone to see a movie and I had
gone into the wrong theater at the multiplex.

Except not only was I not at the multiplex; I wasnt

seeing a movie. I was watching a play. Still, I wondered
if I was watching the right play, the play that I thought I
was going to see.
I dont know why, but I thought The Electric Baby
was going to be a holiday play, a sweet, little theatrical
confection for the whole family to enjoy, if not a new
Christmas play. Maybe it was a modern or post-modern
sci-fi version of the Christmas story. After all, there was
a baby that was electric and the ad said something about
people seeking and trying to get from one place to the
next. It was two weeks before Christmas, and there were
all those cute, family-friendly productions that I was seeing advertised for the holidays.
Then again, it would be just like Ophelias Jump to put
on an unusual, adventurous, even challenging Christmas
play.
The Electric Baby by Stefanie Zadravec wasnt a
Christmas play. It wasnt a holiday production. And it
definitely wasnt family-friendly, with a fair number of fbombs and depictions of a troubled marriage, a car wreck
and profound grief to start off with. No, this wasnt a
happy, jolly show.
But it was magical and wonderful, as in full of wonder. It wasnt so sweet, but it was more like bittersweet,
and it did, surprisingly enough, bring some comfort and
joy.
Thats the thing about Ophelias Jump, the theater
company that has been making a go of it here in the
Claremont area for about the last four years. Not only is
going to their shows an adventure; it is clear that, for the
company, putting on a show is an all-get-out, high-riskhigh-reward adventureone that they love to share with
us, with pride and rightfully so.
Check out Beatrice Casagran. She directed The Electric Baby. She also did the sound design and the scenic
design. This isnt unusual. When the company put on its
superb production of Christopher Durangs Vanya,
Mosha, Sonia and Spike, Ms. Casagran directed and
performed in it. Theater work is hands-on, of course, but
this company is really, really hands-on.
So hands-on that they held rehearsals for The Electric Baby in someones living room. They surely would

City of Trees, PhDs and

insolvency?

Dear Editor:
The first obligation of any municipal
government is to maintain a safe, wellfunctioning, and financially stable community. This ought to be easy enough to
do in a town like Claremont, which is
blessed with many advantagesa strong
tax base, a vibrant business community
and engaged, civic-minded citizens, to
name just a few. And yet our city council,
through its ill-conceived decision to attempt a hostile takeover of our local water
system, has managed to bring us to the
brink of insolvency.
Last month, Judge Richard Fruin of the
Los Angeles Superior Court determined
that it is not necessary and not in the publics interest for Claremont to take over
the system, and he dismissed our eminent
domain lawsuit against Golden State
Water. To date, the city has spent $6.3 million on our own legal and consulting fees,
and we will have to reimburse Golden
State for its litigation expenses. The company has already submitted a $7.4 million
claim to the court.
Whether we want to admit it or not, this
takeover attempt has proven to be one of

READERS COMMENTS

the costliest mistakes a city of our size has

ever made. We have wasted almost $14
million and have absolutely nothing to
show for it but a massive hole in our
budget. To put that number in perspective,
it is more than half of the projected cost
to renovate the police station.
Remarkably, our city council is seriously considering an appeal of the decision. It is important to understand that
there is no legitimate basis for an appeal.
Judge Fruin took great care to address all
of the citys arguments, and the evidence
against our claim of necessity was overwhelming.
At the trial, City Manager Tony Ramos
testified that he had never represented to
the council or the public that water rates
would be reduced. That may come as
news to longtime Claremont residents like
me, who received city mailers and heard
presentations that certainly gave the impression that the city planned to reduce
water rates. The court found that under
city ownership our rates would have to be
raised above what Golden State would
charge us, at any acquisition price.

There was also shocking evidence produced at the trial about the competence
and integrity of the La Verne water
agency, which Claremont has chosen as
the prospective operator of our system.
The court found that La Verne residents
were exposed to unsafe levels of lead in
their drinking water from August 2006
through June 2013and that La Verne
misrepresented the results of water quality
tests to the public on several occasions.
Most importantly, we cannot afford to
appeal. It would cost us at least another
million dollars just to tryand even if the
appellate court ruled in Claremonts favor,
we would have to start all over again with
a new trial in the Superior Court that
would set us back millions of dollars
more. Where will that money come from?
There is just enough spare cash in the general fund to cover our existing obligation
to Golden State, so any new legal costs of
this magnitude will have to come out of
currently budgeted items, perhaps even
the police department and other essential
services.
In any event, there is no longer any way

to win this case. As the trial evidence

demonstrated, the best Claremont can
hope for if it manages to take over the system is to borrow tens of millions of dollars
just to end up with more expensive water
service provided by a substandard operator.
While I am sure that some members of
the public and the city council would prefer to delay the final demise of this endeavor for as long as possibleand that
the citys lawyers would be happy for us
to keep shoveling money at themClaremonts sole priority must be to restore our
now-empty reserves as quickly as possible. Every dollar that is spent on a meaningless appeal just makes the hole we are
in a little deeper.
We should learn from the experience of
other cities that it is usually not the failed
pursuit of a project that creates a financial
crisis, but rather the decision to keep
throwing good money after bad in the
hope that it can somehow be saved. Claremont is at that decision point right now
and however strongly you may have
supported the citys efforts to take over the
water system in the past, I hope you agree
that it is not worth gambling Claremonts
future over now.

Adam Cave

OBITUARIES

Beloved son and brother, sports lover

Adam Arthur Cave, a longtime Claremont resident, died in a traffic accident
on the evening of December 6, 2016.He
was 22 years old.
He was born on January 25, 1994. He
grew up in Claremont, went to Sycamore
Elementary School and El Roble Junior
High School and attended The Webb
Schools of California for high school.
Throughout his youth and teen years,
Adam was constantly involved in sports.
He played soccer (Claremont AYSO
through high school), basketball (CYB
through eighth grade) and baseball
(Claremont Little League through seventh grade). In high school, he was on
the Webb JV basketball team and helped
found the Webb mens volleyball team.
Adam took up golf while in high school;
he was not only an avid golfer but an
avid golf proselytizer, convincing both
his parents to take up the game, against
all odds and expectations.
Adam threw himself into anything he
did. For a time, he decided he was going
to be an actor. He participated in theater
at Claremont School of Theater Arts, at
The Webb Schools and at Pitzer College. He was a natural, who could leave
the crowd rolling in the aisles. He
wanted to start attending a west-side improv workshop on the recommendation
of a staffer at CSTA, and auditioning for
commercials, but eventually decided to
go in other directions. He also participated in student government at Webb,

love was the application of media studies
to sports and, during his last two years at
Pitzer, he worked as an intern with the
Los Angeles Clippers in their data analytics department. In the summer of
2015, he worked for the Los Angeles
Sparks in their public relations department and in the 2015-16 academic year
he worked as a student assistant coach
on the Pomona-Pitzer mens basketball
team.
The flexibility that Pitzer College afforded him in designing and carrying out
his degree allowed him to develop the
skills that contributed to landing his
dream job in September 2016, as the
video coordinator for the Los Angeles
Lakers Development League team, the
D-Fenders. He was part of the coaching

Bill Vaskis

OBITUARIES

Inspiring teacher, tenor singer, scholar

Waldemar Bill Vaskis, a longtime
Claremont High School history teacher
who influenced generations of students,
died by suicide on December 21, 2016 at
Mt. San Antonio Gardens. He was 78.
He came into the world in Philadelphia
on April 16, 1938, the second of three children born to Latvian immigrants Zelma and
William Vaskis. The elder Mr. Vaskis
was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1934
and over the years served as pastor at
churches in Pennsylvania and Baltimore.
He was also in the Army Chaplains Corps
during World War II and the Korean War,
seeing conflict overseas while stationed in
Germany and Korea.
William brought his family, including
Bill and his older sister Inesa Nord-Leth,
then in sixth and seventh grade, to live with
him in Germany for a year. Bill picked up
some German from playing with the local
kids, and he and Inesa enjoyed ice skating
together at Linderhof, King Ludwig IIs
summer palace in Bavaria.
Education was enormously important in
the Vaskis family. After securing a promise that his sweetheart Zelma would marry him, William left Latvia first, attending
West Hill College in Birmingham, England
before landing in Chicago. It was the height
of the Depression but he managed, through
a series of jobs and scholarships, to earn
a bachelors degree in theology at the
Northern Baptist Seminary. Later, he received a masters degree in theology from
Eastern Baptist Seminary in Philadelphia. Upon his return to Latvia, William
served briefly as pastor of a Latvian Baptist Church. He also married Zelma who,
despite proposals from other suitors, had
waited seven years for his return.
In August of 1937, the Vaskises debarked at Ellis Island in New York after a
voyage on the S.S. Europa. Zelma was
pregnant with Bill and had nine-month-old
Inesa in tow. They left just in time. With
the onset of World War II, Latvia was
seized by the Soviet Union in 1940, occupied by Nazi Germany in 1941 and reoccupied by the Soviets in 1944. The family settled in Philadelphia and welcomed
a third child, a son named Andris, a few
years later.
Mr. Vaskis inherited his fathers reverence for learning. After graduating from an
all-boys high school in Maryland, he enrolled in Baltimore City College. He next
attended the University of Pennsylvania,
where he studied classical history and
earned teaching credentials in history,
English and music. He later studied philosophy and theology at Claremont Graduate University.
Mr. Vaskis interest in music, particularly
classical, never waned. In fact, he was a
longtime member of the choir at La Verne
Church of the Brethren, where he sang
tenor.
Bill had an endless subscription to the
Philharmonic in LAhe knew most of the
musicians, Inesa said. That was his passion, really. That, and his Claremont
kids.
In 1967, he landed a gig as a sub at
Claremont High School and then as a fulltime history teacher. He quickly threw himself into the school community, serving as

Bill didnt want any family living in
Claremont, she said. This was his town,
his family and his kids. He just loved Claremont and he was loved here.
Still, she loved her energetic, occasionally irascible little brother. I admired how educated and talented he was,
Ms. Nord-Leth said. He could fly, he
could ski, he could coach soccer.
Mr. Vaskis had been grounded by health
issues lately, including undergoing a
quadruple bypass a few years ago. A
dyed-in-the-wood liberal Democrat, he was
also deeply unsettled by the current state
of political affairs.
Friends throughout the community,
however, say that he didnt seem depressed in his final days. He continued his
usual activities, volunteering and mingling
with friends.
On the last day of his life, Mr. Vaskis got
riled up about politics, which is nothing unusual for someone with an occasional firebrand streak. However, in this case, his
heart rate rose precipitously during the debate. Mr. Vaskis spent the day in the hospital undergoing tests and was later picked
up by Mr. Thoits, who took him home. As
he said good night, he asked Bill to join his
familys Christmas celebration. He seemed
disposed to accept his offer, so Mr. Thoits
was as shocked as any of Mr. Vaskis
friends to hear of his death later that
night.
Ms. Nord-Leth said police sent her a picture of her brothers computer screen.
Shortly before taking his life, he had
written a Facebook message directed at his
many friends in and from Claremont.
The note never posted, but she asked that
his final message be included in his obituary, so people will know he wanted to say
goodbye and hoped his friends wouldnt
grieve too much. He wrote, The ticker has
ceased to work. It has been a great run. You
have been a great bunch. It is time to say
adieu. Bill Vaskis.
A community memorial for Mr. Vaskis is planned for 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 29 at the Garner House in Memorial
Park, 840 N. Indian Hill Blvd., Claremont.

OBITUARIES

Teacher, loving mother and wife

Justine Kelleher Talley, a longtime
area resident, died in Claremont on November 25, 2016. She was 98. Her family shared that she remained caring and
alert until her final days.
She was born in Denver, Colorado in
early spring 1918 to Clark and Margaret Kelleher. Justine spent her early
years in Salida, Colorado and, in 1940,
graduated from Western State College
in Gunnison, Colorado where she met
her future husband Richard Talley.
After college graduation, Ms. Talley
taught school the following yearand
enjoyed playing softball with the studentsin a one-room school in Alamosa, where the temperature did not rise
above zero for over a month during a
cold San Luis Valley winter. She and
Richard were married in 1941 and he

departed for his duties as a Navy officer

on the West Coast and the Pacific during World War II.
Ms. Talley returned to Salida where
her son Michael was born. Following
her husbands return from the war, the
couple moved to Olathe, Colorado
where twin daughters, Nancy and
Susan, arrived a few years later. Ms.
Talley taught in another rural school
district while also busy with raising her
young family. In the early 1950s, the
family moved to Pomona, where
daughters Teresa and Margaret joined
the family over the next few years.
Justine joined General Dynamics
where she was a valued member of the
Contracts Department until her retirement in 1973. She later worked as a
real estate agent and at Pilgrim Place in

Claremont. Ms. Talley remained devoted to family activities, such as

Camp Fire Girls and, in later years, to
the care of her husband, Richard, who
died in 2000. She later moved to La
Verne and then finally to Claremont
Place Senior Living in 2011. At Claremont Place, she especially enjoyed
playing trivia games with other residents, since it enabled to use her sharp
memory without being limited by her
failing eyesight.
Ms. Talley is survived by her five
children, Michael Talley, Nancy Saylor,
Susan Dietz, Teresa Himes and Margaret Cisneros, and by 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. All
have enjoyed listening to her stories of
family and life in the Colorado Mountains during family parties over the

years. She was preceded in death by

her brother Lynn Kelleher of Woodland
Hills and her sister Marie Perry of Denver.
The family would like to thank the
staff of Claremont Place for their care
during the almost six years she resided
there. They would also like to thank the
staff of Vitas Hospice for caring for her
in her final days.
A service in Ms. Talleys honor is
scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 7 at Todd Memorial Chapel, 325
W. Indian Hill Blvd. in Claremont. In
lieu of flowers, contributions can be
made to Learning Ally, which assists
visually impaired students. Interment
will be at the National Cemetery in
Riverside, California at a later date.

was hit by a car while acting as a good
SamaritanShirley and her family

soon after she graduated. She was a primary school teacher in Pullman, Washington while Mr. Abrams completed his

PhD from Washington State.After he

graduated, he took a job at General Dynamics in Pomona and she raised her
two children at the family home in
Pomona.

her children, and continued her passionate support of education by acting as
PTA president and volunteering in leadership positions in the community with
the United Way, Heart Association, the
Jewish Federation and the County Education Coordinating Council. She received numerous Leader of the Year
awards from these organizations.
Around 1982, her volunteer efforts
became so valuable to the Los Angeles
County Department of Education that
they created a full-time position for her
at the main office in Downey. She led
vital programs on the education of the
homeless and on addressing truancy in
the schools until her retirement in 2011.

Even with all of her activities, family
and friends always came first to
Shirley.She regularly met with groups
of friends, and prided herself on being
present at important occasions in the
lives of her loved ones. After her daughter Gale moved to Upland when her
daughters were young, she maintained a
regular presence and was a source of inspiration for Gale and her children.

INSECURE ALEX Artists oftentimes

project an air of invincibility and
supreme confidence, which can mask an
underlying layer of uncertainty and selfdoubt. Or maybe thats just me. Regardless, Pomonas Acerogami bar, at 228 W.
2nd St., is hosting a touring band called
Insecure Alex tonight. The venues website describes the group thusly: Insecure
Alex started in the summer of 2015.
Their sound blends genres like Motown,
hip-hop and rock and their live performance is one you wont want to miss.
The show is at 9 p.m. and is a mere $5,
so it wont cost much to find out if this
band is all hat and no cattle, are truly insecure, or perhaps making an ironic joke
about their justifiably outsized egos.

BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this
property lien, you should understand that there are
risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will
be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of
the property. You should also be aware that the lien
being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are
the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be
responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien
being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate
the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens
that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorders office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you
should be aware that the same lender may hold more
than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property.
NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE Note: Because
the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the
total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the
sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date
shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one
or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee,
or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information
about trustee sale postponements be made available

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City Council of the City of Claremont will conduct a
public hearing to consider the sale of a City-owned parcel approximately 200 square feet in
size located directly behind the existing building at 119 N. Yale Avenue, and an associated
lot line adjustment (File: #12-LL03).
The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. in the Claremont
City Council Chamber, 207 Harvard Avenue. All interested persons are invited to attend
and provide comments.
The sale of the property is categorically exempt from any further review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) pursuant to Section 15312 of State and local CEQA
Guidelines. This class 12 exemption allows for sale of surplus government property that
has no statewide, regional, or areawide concern. This property is exempt surplus land of only
200 square feet. Additionally, the sale of the property is exempt from CEQA pursuant to Section 15061(b)(3) because it can be seen with certainty that the mere transfer of title to the
property from the City to the applicant will not have a significant effect on the environment.
The sale of the property will not result in the approval of any new development project or
make any changes to the Citys adopted Land Use Plan. Lot line adjustment requests are
categorically exempt from environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act, pursuant to CEQA guidelines 15305, Class 5(a) and pursuant to the City of Claremont List of Activities Determined to be Exempt from CEQA, item 25: Lot line Adjustment
Not Resulting in Change of Use or Density. Therefore no further environmental review is
necessary.
Plans for the proposed sale and lot line adjustment are available at the Planning Division,
Claremont City Hall, 207 Harvard Avenue. For more information on the proposal, please
contact Management Analyst Austin Ramirez at (909) 399-5473, or send written comments
to P.O. Box 880, Claremont, CA 91711-0880.
Finally, in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, any person with a disability who requires a modification or accommodation in order to participate in a City meeting should contact the City Clerk at 909/399 5461 VOICE or 1-800/735-2929 TT/TTY at
least three working days prior to the meeting, if possible.

caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be
recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are
considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee
auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does
not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership
of the property. You should also be aware that the lien
being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the
highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being
auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this
property by contacting the county recorders office or a
title insurance company, either of which may charge you
a fee for this information. If you consult either of these
resources, you should be aware that the same lender may
hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE Note: Because
the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the
opening bid may be less than the total debt NOTICE TO
PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the
mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires
that information about trustee sale postponements be made
available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those
not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your
sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the
rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property,

AUCTION TO HIGHEST BIDDER FOR CASH,
CASHIERS CHECK DRAWN ON A STATE OR
NATIONAL BANK, A CHECK DRAWN BY A
STATE OR FEDERAL CREDIT UNION, OR A
CHECK DRAWN BY A STATE OR FEDERAL
SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION, A SAVINGS ASSOCIATION OR SAVINGS BANK
SPECIFIED IN SECTION 5102 OF THE FINANCIAL CODE AND AUTHORIZED TO DO BUSINESS IN THIS STATE: All right, title, and interest
conveyed to and now held by the trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a
Deed of Trust described as: More fully described in
said Deed of Trust. Street Address or other common
designation of real property: 26819 Bayport Ln,
Santa Clarita, CA 91355 A.P.N.: 2811-080-023
The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for
any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above. The sale will
be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of
the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust. The total
amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of
the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is: $
522,552.21. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidders sole
and exclusive remedy shall be the return of
monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful
bidder shall have no further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure, and the undersigned caused a
Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded
in the county where the real property is located.
NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are
considering bidding on this property lien, you should
understand that there are risks involved in bidding at
a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not
on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a
trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to
free and clear ownership of the property. You should
also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may
be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the
auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off
all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before
you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and
size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorders office or a
title insurance company, either of which may charge
you a fee for this information. If you consult either
of these resources, you should be aware that the
same lender may hold more than one mortgage or
deed of trust on this property. NOTICE OF
TRUSTEE'S SALE Note: Because the Beneficiary
reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed,
it is possible that at the time of the sale the opening
bid may be less than the total debt NOTICE TO
PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on
this notice of sale may be postponed one or more
times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a

court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California

Civil Code. The law requires that information about
trustee sale postponements be made available to you
and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present
at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale
date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the
rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site http://www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/TrusteeServices.a

information is to attend the scheduled sale. Western

WHAT GEOFF'S CLIENTS ARE SAYING . . .

Geoff exceeded our very high expectations in the recent sale of our Claremont Village property. We appreciated the professionalism, courtesy and speed with which he shepherded the process from start to finish, keeping us fully informed throughout. It is a pleasure to see a master at work!
V. Sathe & S. Sathe
All along the way, from the search, to offer, to escrow, to closing, the process was smooth and painless. We
were informed all along the way of what to expect and when. I cannot recommend Geoff Hamill highly
enough. He is a professional who has years of knowledge he generously shares.
J. Spera & A. Conway
Geoff did an outstanding job selling our Upland. His attention to detail was superior. We immediately recommended that our son list another Upland property with Geoff due to our satisfaction with the service provided.
S. Campbell & O. Campbell

Geoff was fantastic and professional with my recent real estate purchase. To be honest, I was a little reluctant to
call him because I thought he only serviced higher value homes, but he treated it like it was a million dollar deal
and was on top of every step in the process. He probably didn't know it at the time, but I was preoccupied with
my father being in and out of the hospital and I didn't have much time to be involved in the transaction. Geoff
T. Freeman & M. Freeman
took care of the whole thing and was a constant professional!
