Description: This course is for students who have a command of English, but still
need improvement. There is a strong emphasis on writing, but this course also
includes practice in reading skills, with some listening and speaking as well. The
primary evaluation of this class is based on three papers, as well as four reading
responses, homework, and class participation.
The goals of Advanced English as a Second Language are as follows:

Develop writing processes, writing with attention, and purpose to audience.


Improve organization and development, and compose meaningful
documents.
Successfully write papers, integrating secondary resources with proper
documentation.
Refine the revision and peer responding processes, employ proper grammar,
mechanics and format, with attention to word choice, tone and style.
Improve literacy skills pertaining to both physical and digital readingincluding speed, recognition, analysis, and criticism.

Grading Breakdown:
Formal Papers: Three papers will be assigned during this course. All
papers will go through multiple drafts and revisions.

50%

Paper 1 (3 pages) 10%, Paper 2 (5 pages) 15%, Paper 3 (7


pages) 25%

Response Papers: Four reading response papers will be assigned


during this course. Reading responses will be between 1 to 1.5 pages
long, and based off of a reading done in class or for homework.
Homework: Homework will usually be in the form of reading
assignments, or work from the textbook. Reading assignments will
usually come from magazines or newspapers, but some academic
journals/articles may also be assigned as homework.
Attendance and Participation: You are expected to participate in class
discussions and share ideas with your classmates. You are also
expected to complete all in-class assignments. Please keep in mind
that if you are absent more than 7 times, you will fail the
course. If you are more than 5 minutes late to class for two classes,
it will count as one absence.
Final Presentation: At the end of the semester, every student will have
a 5-minute presentation about their final essay.

95%+ = A
90%-94% = A86%-89% = B+

A binder and notebook paper: You should also always have your class binder
and notebook paper too for notes, in-class writing, and handouts.
Regular access to Blackboard as all other material and assignments will be
available through this site.
General Education: C Requirement Composition
Students in C courses will demonstrate
1. Understanding of course content through formal academic writing.
2. Critical thinking and advances conclusions appropriate to the course and
discipline.
3. The ability to revise and improve writing in both form and context.
Classroom Policies:
Students are expected to come to class with assigned materials completed.
Assignments that are 1 day late = -25%, 2 days late = -50%, 3 days late = no
credit!
Electronics are allowed in class. However, they are not to be used for nonacademic purposes. Do not use your laptop or smartphone to surf the web, chat
with friends, or anything else besides doing classwork. You will lose points for
using your phone for non-academic purposes.
You may bring drinks to class (e.g. water, coffee), but you may not eat during
class.
Students who disrespect others will have one conference with the teacher
explaining why their behavior is unacceptable. A second incident will result in a
meeting with the ESL director. Harassment will not be tolerated.
The ESAs have the power to enforce all classroom rules.
Writing Center:
The Writing Center at Binghamton University is an excellent resource. Sometimes
you might need help outside of class. If you ever need help with correcting your
papers, or receiving tips on how to improve your writing, please visit them at LN

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is a serious offense in North American universities and has serious
consequences. Plagiarism is defined by Binghamton University as Presenting the
work of another person as ones own work (including papers, words, ideas,
information, computer code, data, evidence organizing principles, or style of
presentation of someone else taken from the internet, books, periodicals, or other
sources). Plagiarism includes:

Quoting, paraphrasing, or summarizing without acknowledgement, even


a few phrases
Failing to acknowledge the source of either a major idea or ordering
principle central to ones own paper
Relying on another persons data, evidence, or critical method without
credit or permission
