Proponents argue that corporations increase long-term profits by operating with a CSR
perspective, while critics argue that CSR distracts from business' economic role. A 2000 study
compared existing econometric studies of the relationship between social and financial
performance, concluding that the contradictory results of previous studies reporting positive,
negative, and neutral financial impact, were due to flawed empirical analysis and claimed when
the study is properly specified, CSR has a neutral impact on financial outcomes.[5]
Critics[6][7] questioned the "lofty" and sometimes "unrealistic expectations" in CSR.[8] or that CSR
is merely window-dressing, or an attempt to pre-empt the role of governments as a watchdog
over powerful multinational corporations.
Political sociologists became interested in CSR in the context of theories
of globalization, neoliberalism and late capitalism. Some sociologists viewed CSR as a form of
capitalist legitimacy and in particular point out that what began as a social movement against
uninhibited corporate power was transformed by corporations into a 'business model' and a 'risk
management' device, often with questionable results.[9]
CSR is titled to aid an organization's mission as well as a guide to what the company stands for
to its consumers. Business ethics is the part of applied ethics that examines ethical principles and
moral or ethical problems that can arise in a business environment. ISO 26000 is the recognized
international standard for CSR. Public sector organizations (the United Nations for example)
adhere to the triple bottom line (TBL). It is widely accepted that CSR adheres to similar
principles, but with no formal act of legislation.

philanthropic activities, donations and overseas foundations.
The Mitsubishi Electric Group is committed to improving its technologies and services by

Under these principles, we constantly strive to increase customer satisfaction and contribute to

PETRONAS has developed a guideline to outline the hours of service limit for staff in different
work groups. To better manage fatigue at the workplace, stringent recommendations were made
to the hours of service limit of the work groups involved in safety sensitive positions. Operating
units are required to implement a Fatigue Management Plan to identify fatigue among staff and
eliminate fatigue in the workplace.

PETRONAS' transformation journey from a domestic-based national oil company into a fully
integrated oil and gas multinational corporation has seen many significant milestones charted.
Here are some of the main highlights:
Our logo, introduced in 1974, is a symbol of dynamism and forward movement, qualities that
have fuelled our growth for four decades.
With 15 people and only two phone lines, we started operating from within the premises of the
Prime Ministers Department at Jalan Dato Onn, Kuala Lumpur.
We signed our first Production Sharing Contract (PSC) in 1976, transforming the concession
system governing the oil exploration and exploitation to the more equitable PSC system, later
heralding the creation of PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd.
When Malaysia was hit with a global oil crisis due to shortage of diesel in 1979, we set up three
skid-tank stations to retail kerosene and diesel to customers in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya.
Stepping beyond our role as just an operator, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd was incorporated in
1978 to actively embark on exploration and production activities.
PETRONAS expanded into the downstream business with the incorporation of ASEAN Bintulu
Fertilizer Sdn Bhd in 1980.
We drilled our first appraisal well in the Duyong gas field, and achieved our first oil discovery at
the Dulang oil field in 1981.
On 3 July 1981, we opened our flagship service station in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur,
where it still stands to this day. This paved the way to the setting up of many more stations
throughout Malaysia, leading to the establishment of PETRONAS Dagangan Sdn Bhd.
PETRONAS' first learning institutions, the Petroleum Industrial Training Institute (now known
as INSTEP) was established in 1981, to address our manpower needs for the rapidly expanding
business. Today, our learning institutions serve the needs of the industry and include Akademi
Laut Malaysia, PETRONAS Leadership Centre, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS and Kimanis
Training Centre.
Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG), incorporated in 1978, led to the completion of the
PETRONAS LNG Complex in Bintulu, Sarawak in August 1982. It paved way for Malaysia's
entry into LNG business which saw its first cargo set sail for Japan on 29 January 1983.
We established PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad in August 1982 to market our downstream oil and
gas products, adding value to our expanding oil and gas value chain. Today, we have more than
1,000 service stations across the country.
Our first wholly-owned refinery plant commenced operations on 9 March 1983 in Kertih,
Terengganu, with a capacity of 30,000 bpd. In less than a month, we exported our first
production of naphtha to Japan.
In 1989, then President, the late Tun Azizan Zainul Abidin, launched the PETRONAS Shared
Values of Loyalty, Integrity, Professionalism and Cohesiveness. These values remain deeply
entrenched within the Company's most valuable asset, our people.
Our first successful international venture into Vietnam in 1991 marked the beginning of our
globalisation journey, thanks to the direction of our visionary leaders and our inherent pioneering
spirit.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the PETRONAS Twin Towers took place in 1992. The towers,
designed by renowned Argentine American architect Cesar Pelli, have one of the worlds deepest
foundations at 120 metres and remain the tallest twin towers in the world.
We received delivery of our first commissioned LNG carrier, Puteri Intan, built in 1994 in
France.
Our first foray into the F1 arena was our partnership with the Red Bull Sauber PETRONAS F1
Racing Team in 1995, an opportunity that saw us gain valuable brand exposure and propelled
advances in our fuel and lubricant R&D.
We acquired a 30% interest in Engen Ltd, South Africa in 1996. Two years later, we acquired the
remaining 70% interest, making Engen a fully-owned subsidiary of PETRONAS.
Our first discovery in Vietnam was the Ruby oil field in 1998, an achievement that spurred us on
to become a major oil and gas industry player.
We introduced the first Malaysian natural gas powered prototype taxi, the Enviro 2000, in 1998.
Today, we have 120 stations equipped to retail natural gas for vehicles.
Our overseas foray included Sudan, where we participated in the development of oil project in
the Muglad Basin.
The PETRONAS Twin Towers were officially opened by then Prime Minister, YABhg Tun Dr
Mahathir Mohamad, on 1 August 1999.
PETRONAS Syntium, a 100% synthetic performance lubricant, was launched for the Sauber
PETRONAS F1 team.
We introduced our revolutionary new generation petrol, PRIMAX in 2000. It was a technological
breakthrough, in line with the companys efforts to continuously add value to our products and
services.
In 2001, an integrated chemical complex of global scale was opened in Gebeng, Kuantan,
encompassing 150 hectares of 12 plants producing acrylic monomers, oxo products and
butanediol. The combined capacity of the plants is at more than 1 million tonnes per year.
The PETRONAS LNG complex in Bintulu, Sarawak, hosts three LNG plants and is the worlds
largest producer of LNG at a single location.
We launched the book A Vision Realised The Transformation of a National Oil Corporation
in June 2001. Written by Datuk Dr Paddy Bowie, the book documents PETRONAS 25 years of
impressive development.
We marked a new milestone in 2002 with Malaysias first deepwater oil discovery at the Kikeh
field, offshore Sabah. Kikehs Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) system is also
Malaysias first, and was constructed at over 7.2 million man-hours with Zero Loss Time
Incidents.
The PETRONAS Petroleum Industry Complex (PPIC) was opened in 2002. With 41 installations
and support plants, it is an integrated world-class complex housing a number of world-scale
petroleum-based manufacturing facilities.
The Sabah-Sarawak Integrated Oil & Gas Project (SSIOGP) sanctioned in 2005 is another a
large-scale integrated project currently undertaken by PETRONAS to harness the oil and gas
resources in the offshore areas of Sabah. Comprising three offshore fields, two onshore projects,
two downstream projects and a training centre, the project is set to transform the landscape of
Sabahs oil and gas industry and provide vast opportunities to Sabahans.
We grew our unconventional business with an investment in Gladstone LNG, Australia, in 2010,
and acquisition of Progress Energy in Canada in 2012. Both projects are expected to strengthen
our unconventional strategy whilst cementing our position as a major global LNG player.
In 2011, we announced our new project, the Refinery and Petrochemicals Integrated
Development (RAPID), producing differentiated and highly-specialised chemicals. It is greater
in scale and scope compared to Kertih, Melaka, and Gebeng complexes combined.
We embarked on Risk Service Contracts (RSC) to encourage the development of marginal fields
with first RSC signed in January 2011 for Berantai.
After 14 months of hard work, the Gumusut Kakap field, Malaysias second deepwater field,
achieved its first oil production with Zero Lost Time Injury on 18 November 2012.
To spearhead Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) efforts, we initiated TAPIS EOR in Malaysia,
which became Southeast Asias first and largest EOR project. TAPIS EOR will help augment our
reserves and improve recovery for at least 20-30 years.
In 2012, we completed Malaysias first LNG re-gasification terminal in Sungai Udang, Melaka,
an engineering achievement made possible by the dedication and commitment of our staff.
In 2012, we embarked upon the creation and construction of one of our most ambitious projects,
slated to be the first in the world PETRONAS Floating LNG 1 and 2.
We made our first foray into the Middle East and pulled through a grueling operating
environment to deliver oil, while also contributing to the well-being of the communities in the
area. The work paid off as we celebrated first oil from the Garraf and Majnoon fields in 2013,
and Badra in 2014.
We signed our 100th active Production Sharing Contract (PSC) in December 2013, the most
number of active PSCs we have ever had since the PSC system was introduced.
A series of podium wins by our MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS F1 team in the 2014 race not
only celebrated the accomplishments by our technology team but helped us produce better fuel.
Improvements in our racing fuel are applied to fuel that consumers on the road can enjoy, giving
them better fuel efficiency, cost savings and cleaner engines.
