1.0 What is Fast Food

Fast food, a type of mass-produced food that is prepared and served very quickly, was
first popularized in the 1950s in the United States, and is typically less nutritionally
valuable compared to other foods and dishes. While any meal with low preparation time
can be considered fast food, typically the term refers to food sold in a restaurant or store
with preheated or precooked ingredients, and served to the customer in a packaged
form for take-out/take-away. Fast food restaurants are traditionally distinguished by their
ability to serve food via a drive-through. The term "fast food" was recognized in a
dictionary by (Merriam Webster in,1951).
Outlets may be stands or kiosks, which may provide no shelter or seating,[1] or fast
food restaurants (also known as quick service restaurants). Franchise operations that
are part of restaurant chains have standardized foodstuffs shipped to each restaurant
from central locations. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), fast foods
are quick alternatives to home-cooked meals. They are also high in saturated fat, sugar,
salt and calories.
Eating too much fast food has been linked to, among other things, colorectal cancer,
obesity and high cholesterol. The traditional family dinner is increasingly being replaced
by the consumption of takeaway, or eating "on the run". As a result, the time invested on
food preparation is getting lower and lower, with an average couple in the United States
spending 47 minutes and 19 minutes per day, carrying out food preparation.

2.0 History of Fast Food Business

The concept of ready-cooked food for sale is closely connected with urban
development. In Ancient Rome, cities had street stands - a large counter with a
receptacle in the middle from which food or drink would have been served. It was during
post World War 2 American economic boom that Americans began to spend more and
buy more as the economy boomed and a culture of consumerism bloomed. As a result
of this new desire to have it all, coupled with the strides made by women while the men
were away, both members of the household began to work outside the home. Eating
out, which had previously been considered a luxury, became a common occurrence,
and then a necessity. Workers, and working families, needed quick service and
inexpensive food for both lunch and dinner. This need is what drove the phenomenal
success of the early fast food giants, which catered to the family on the go (Franklin A.
Jacobs). Fast food became an easy option for a busy family, as is the case for many
families today.

Wireless Network (wi-fi)
A Wi-Fi network allows people to use their smartphones, tablet computers or laptops to
connect to the internet, whether that is for work, play or simply when some form of
information is needed perhaps a phone number or address. Recent research by The
Cloud found that 10.6 million Brits use high street Wi-Fi options each week, while five
million use Wi-Fi networks in pubs for work purposes.
What is interesting is that there is almost an expectation particularly among younger
consumers that a bar, cafe or restaurant will have Wi-Fi freely available to customers.
Putting this unusual sense of entitlement to one side, there is definitely appetite for the
service, especially since penetration levels of internet-enabled devices is rising
significantly globally.
When people are deciding where to go to eat or drink, they will consider a whole host of
factors ambience, price, location and product range among other things, but internet
access can also be a consideration. Consumers who own internet-enabled devices will
often want to check something on the web, download a media file or communicate with
friends on social networks; for this they need the internet and generally speaking they
will have limited data plans to work from.
By providing free Wi-Fi, a business is essentially enabling the activity that comes
naturally to Generation Y, which is a neat perk that could influence their decision
regarding which bar to go to or restaurant to dine at. There are actually many guides

and apps available directing people to places with free Wi-Fi. Naturally, 3G and 4G
allow internet activity on smartphones, but a Wi-Fi network delivers the sense of getting
added value.
4.1.2 Equipment
As a fast food restaurant, you need to offer customers speed, efficient service, variety,
and a sense of convenience, and all of this stems from your equipment.
Service Counter
Table service is food service served to the customer's table by waiters and waitresses,
also known as "servers". Table service is common in most restaurants, while for some
fast food restaurants counter service is the common form.
Significance
One of the most important pieces of restaurant equipment is a point of sale system.
Restaurants need POS systems so they can track sales and inventory usage, according
to Microsoft. com. POS systems help specify the exact amount of product used for each
purchase. Hence, we will subsequently be able to calculate cost of goods sold, one of
the most significant restaurant expenses. POS systems connect register transactions to
the restaurant computer. These POS systems also allow the staff to print out reports so
they can study ways to lower food costs.
Identification
The owner will need to determine the small equipment you need based on the type of
restaurant his or her own. For example, all restaurants will need pots, pans and various
cookware. However, a finer dining establishment will likely require more mixers, dicing
equipment, cutlery and marinading pans for meats or steaks. Most restaurants will
require stainless steel tables and cutting boards for meal preparation. Other types of
restaurant equipment include meat grinders, dish washing machines, dough rollers,
bread slicers, colanders and blenders.
Function

Most restaurant food is cooked in ovens or on open ranges or stoves. The size and type
of stove is largely determined by your potential sales volume and needs. The restaurant
will also need fryers for preparing food, such as french fries, onion rings and other fried
foods. Near the front of the restaurant, heating stations will help keep foods warm for
short periods of time. In addition, the restaurant may need steam cabinets and a steam
table if the restaurant serve foods, such as tortillas, meats and hot sauces.
Cold Storage
Most restaurants require refrigerators and freezers for storing cold foods. For example,
the staff will need to put foods, including ice cream and frozen meat, in a large freezer
when shipments arrive. Milk, eggs and most meats will require refrigeration. The
restaurant will also need a walk-in refrigerated unit for storing foods from the service
line. Service line foods are those you have left over from the day, such as lettuce,
cheese and green onions. The restaurant will store these items in tall or shallow metal
bins depending on how quickly they want them to cool.
Service
Many restaurants use certain types of self-service equipment to hasten the ordering
process. For example, fast food restaurants use self-service soft drink dispensers.
Customers can purchase their drinks and fill their own cups. Many casual dining or sitdown restaurant establishments use self-service ice cream machines. In addition,
restaurant may need self-service salad tables, sneeze guards and holding bins in a
cafeteria-style setting.
