Inspection&Diagnosis

Ensuring and enhancing the reliability and availability of your station

At ABB, we have dedicated ourselves to this mission and designed our Inspection and Diagnosis programs to attain this
important goal. Therefore we carry out visual Inspections on a frequent basis, checking the entire GIS installation and its
components. Accompanied by the Diagnosis program designed to measure and analyze all vital functions, we strive to
achieve total peace of mind for you regarding the proper operation of your station. Unlike the Inspection, the Diagnosis
requires a shutdown of the bay to conduct certain tests and measurements. The final report gives a comprehensive overview
of the condition of your equipment and provides you with recommendations on how reliability can be maintained at the
highest level. Our experience in supplying and servicing GIS for well over 40 years enables us to give you the best possible
advice as a user of ABB GIS.
Inspection
During the frequent Inspections, ABB service engineers visit your station and check the entire installation including the GIS equipment
with all its components and general environmental parameters. The checks mainly consist of visual Inspections and recordings of
operational data following a detailed checklist developed and updated with the expertise of our engineers who take care of all ABB GIS
installations around the globe. Thanks to the experience of our staff with many different stations and environments, they are precisely
aware of where defects might occur and compare these to known cases. By detecting irregularities at an early stage, they can be corrected through minor repair work instead of possibly letting them develop into major failures that can only be corrected through extensive
troubleshooting activities.
Diagnosis
To maintain the smooth operation of your station in the future, our service engineers carry out a detailed Diagnosis. The Diagnosis includes
the complete scope of work conducted within the Inspection, but in addition the equipment is more thoroughly analyzed:
Functional tests of all vital GIS components
Analytical measurements
SF6-gas quality and density monitor supervision
The functional tests are performed for all vital GIS components including the circuit breaker, the circuit breaker operating mechanism
and the disconnecting, earthing, and fast-acting earthing switches with their drive. In a second step, important measurement data relating
to dynamic resistance, stroke time and switching speed, motor currents and other things is collected and evaluated at a later stage.
The calibration of the gas density monitors is also checked to ensure the proper functionality of the alarms. Last but not least, gas quality
is analyzed, focusing on humidity, purity and decomposition products. All of these findings are important indicators to determine the
equipments condition and become especially valuable through the comparison with previous measurements. Therefore the Diagnosis is
most useful as a regular check-up and not a once-in-a-lifetime activity. It provides a decision guideline for maintenance activities.
Your benefits
As a result of both, the Inspection and the Diagnosis, you will receive a report revealing the actual state of your station. Based on the
checked parameters, it contains recommendations about the necessary steps to take in order to keep your station in good working order.
Furthermore, our service team gains valuable station-specific knowledge that brings insights about the future development
of your equipment. Overall your failure risk is reduced and your station performance thereby increased.
