LESSON PLAN First Day of Class
TOPIC TITLE: Course Overview & Review
TIME: 2 Hrs.
METHOD: Contextualized interactive communication, culturally embedded
content, guided discussion, and application with feedback.
LESSON REFERENCES: Find lesson references and at the end of document
and under the Syllabus tab of the class homeroom.
AUDIO/VISUAL INSTRUCTIONAL AIDS:
1. PowerPoint - to present the course requirements and technical
overview.
2. White board - to practice the classroom tools, such as Annotations
Tools, Viewing Tools, etc.
3. Student Policy Book to familiarize students with school policy.
STUDENT PREPARATION: Students should check Syllabus tab on the
eMentor homeroom webpage.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME: Understand how to use vConnect
and appreciate how language learning works in an online
environment.
COGNITIVE OBJECTIVE:
1. Understand platform and use tools to complete required tasks.
2. Comprehend and be able to explain the scope & focus of the course,
target proficiency level, and the types of tasks expected to perform
upon completion.

1. Log in and navigate to various places to complete tasks per course
requirements.
2. Describe the course objectives.

1. Receive course overview

LESSON OUTLINE:
CONTENT
INTRODUCTION PART I
Technical Training Orientation; explain how to use the
annotation tools, class rules such as attendance and
assignment policies; introduce the class homeroom through
which students access the virtual classroom, and where
homework, lesson plan, syllabus, announcements,
assignments, and grades are posted.
BREAK
INTRODUCTION PART II
General introduction of class instructor and participants; go
over the course syllabus, course objectives, and course
policies as well as resources;
students share their prior language experience; students
explain what they hope to accomplish; students list particular
challenges with the language.
Instructor assesses students needs and current level of
proficiency in ALL FOUR MODALITIES.
Suggested activities for initial assessment:

Speaking
Students greet each other in TL;
Students introduce themselves in TL;
Students list 5 daily activities;
Students answer the following questions:
o What time is it?
o What is todays date?
o How are you today?
o How is the weather today in ?

Reading Comprehension
Students read short texts that contain high frequency
words and numbers and answer comprehension
questions (ideally the text is accompanied by pictures);
and/or
Show students a road map with the way from A to B
marked in red. Give students two different texts with
directions from A to B (only one text contains the
correct directions). Students must identify the text with
correct directions from A to B.
Listening Comprehension
Show a video of people greeting each other ask
comprehension questions (e.g. what are the peoples
names, was the exchange formal or informal); and/or
Show a video (or read a text) about a persons daily
activities - ask comprehension questions (e.g. when
does he/she get up, what does she have he/she have
for breakfast, when does he/she go to work).
Writing
Students write 5 sentences about their daily activities.
CONCLUSION:
Determine whether the learning objectives of using the
platform and homeroom are achieved, where the gaps may
be, and how to bridge the gaps. Discuss and summarize
students needs and learning objectives. Preview the topic for
the next lesson.
