The Department of Economics at the University of Sheffield is inviting applications from excellent
students for funded 3-year PhD scholarships starting in September 2017.
The project: Measuring welfare through equivalent consumption over the life course
Public policy aims to make people's lives better. But in order to do so, we need a measure to
capture how well peoples' lives are going. Different measures have been used, such as GDP per
capita, life expectancy at birth, subjective wellbeing, etc, each with different problems.
The proposed PhD will examine a concept of individual wellbeing called equivalent
consumption. This is a measure that combines economic and non-economic aspects in a way
that reflects the fact that different people have different tastes and preferences over important
things in life.
You will build on the existing literature and develop it in two new directions. One is to use
secondary datasets and model equivalent consumption dynamically, and to analyse how people's
wellbeing changes over time. The second is to collect primary data and ask people questions
about hypothetical life scenarios, which will allow a full analysis of people's tastes over things that
are important in their lives.
You will be supervised by Professor Aki Tsuchiya and Dr Bert van Landeghem in the Department
of Economics.
Applicants should have
A Masters degree in economics or be currently studying for a Masters degree in
economics.
An interest and some research experience in the field of labour economics and/or applied
econometrics would be desirable but not essential.
