data communications equipment (DCE) serial port.
5. The Alarm port is provisioned as a DB-9 serial port and is used to connect to external alarm
devices that report conditions that trigger red or amber alarms.

ESS-1 LEDs
Status

Green: Operationally up and administratively up.

Amber: Operationally down but administratively up.
Unlit: Not operational, shutdown, or administratively down.

Power Supplies 1 and 2

Green: Indicates that AC input power is present and operational.

Amber: Indicates an error condition with the AC input power.

ESS-7 Chassis
The ESS-7 chassis supports seven slots, five IOMs and two SF/CPMs. The IOM slots are
numbered 1 through 5, with 1 being at the top of the chassis. The SF/CPM slots are designated
as slots A and B, with B being the bottom slot.
Each IOM holds two MDAs, designated MDA 1 and MDA 2. If you are facing the front of the
chassis, MDA 1 is installed in the left-hand slot of an IOM and MDA 2 is installed in the
right-hand slot of the IOM.
The SF/CPM, IOMs, MDAs, and power supply modules can be accessed from the front of
the chassis. The fan and filter trays are accessible from the rear of the chassis. Power supply
modules are front-loaded in bays 1 and 2.

ESS-7 Features
The ESS-7 supports the following features:

Two hot-swappable 100 Gb/s SF/CPMs; load sharing and fully redundant when two of
one type are installed.

1. Safety cover.
2. AC Power Supply Module (PSM).
3. Captive screws.
4. Screw receptacle.
The ESS-7 requires a minimum of one power entry module (PEM) installed in one of the slots
in the rear of the ESS-7 and one PSM installed in a corresponding slot in the front of the ESS-7
to operate, but two are recommended for redundancy.
In a redundant configuration, the power supplies load share and are hot swappable.
Each AC-input PEM requires a dedicated 20A service.
There are two front and two rear power bays in the 7450 ESS-7 chassis. The AC PSMs are
installed in the front power slots 1 and 2. They correspond to the AC PEMs installed in the
respective rear power slots 1 and 2, directly behind the PSM. For example, the AC PSM
installed in the front power slot 1 corresponds to the AC PSM installed in the rear power slot 1
and the AC PSM installed in the front power slot 2 corresponds to the AC PEM installed in the
rear power slot 2.

The ESS-7 requires a minimum of one PEM to operate, but two are recommended for

In a redundant configuration, the power supplies load share and are hot swappable.
Each DC-input PEM requires a dedicated 60A service.
The DC PEMs are designed to be installed in the right or left rear power slot, although they are
interchangeable. The terminal block on the left DC PEM should be oriented on the left side of
the faceplate so the power cables are directed to the left of the chassis. The terminal block on
the right DC PEM must be oriented on the right side of the faceplate so the power cables are
directed to the right of the chassis.

System Components
Media Dependent Adapters
Media Dependent Adapters (MDA) provide physical access to the Ethernet service switch.
MDAs provide interfaces from 10/100 Ethernet up to OC-48 and are common to all service
router platforms.
Each MDA contains the required MAC / Framer logic to achieve the proper physical interface
(10/100, 10/100/1000, 1G or 10G Ethernet or SONET/SDH). Each MDA also contains bridge
functionality to convert the physical interface to a common standard (proprietary internal
format).
In the egress direction, the proprietary internal format is converted back to the appropriate
interface format. In addition, the MDA can provide back pressure to the flexible fast path
complex in cases where the egress data flow is less than line rate.

Input/Output Module
Input/Output modules (IOM) are responsible for connecting to standard physical interfaces
(10GE, 1GE, 10/100 Ethernet, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, OC-x, POS, etc.).
The IOM performs the following functions:

processes received frames from an interface to accomplish all switching and routing
decisions

formats frames into cells to be switched through the core fabric and sends cells to the
fabric. Similarly frames to be sent out interfaces are first received from the fabric as cells,
re-assembled into frames, and processed to accomplish egress specific encapsulation as
well as filtering / mirroring actions.

An IOM contains two 10Gb/s flexible fast path complexes. Each complex supports a
pluggable MDA that allows a common flexible fast path to support all of the possible
interface types.
An IOM also contains a CPU section for managing the forwarding hardware in each flexible
fast path complex as well as for participating in the distributed control plane used in the
system.

The Switching Fabric/CPU Module (SF/CPM) can be divided into two sections:

the switching fabric

a dual processing complex.

Each switch fabric is made up of independent switching elements that provide 200 Gb/s fullduplex switching capacity.
The dual processing complex consists of two processors, a flexible fast path complex, and
some shared I/O resources (ie. management Ethernet ports, serial ports, Compact Flash
sockets, system clocks, temperature monitors). The processors are responsible for the systems
control plane processing and protocol stacks.
