STAT 501
Experimental Statistics I
Purpose: To explain the essential ideas and concepts of applied statistics, including numerical
summaries, graphing, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, two-way tables and the Chi-square,
regression and ANOVA. Also, Stat 501 covers some elementary statistical concepts and fundament
statistical theory. STAT 502 follows this course with a treatment of more complicated data structur
My take: Although I think most of the concepts and procedures in Stat 501 are not difficult, for mo
of you they will require a fair amount of timeboth learning and applying them. So while I have ne
met a student that was incapable of doing statistics, I have encountered several that did not put in the
necessary time to learn in sufficiently for this course. Some of you will be challenged, others not so
much. Regardless, it is my goal to help you appreciate statistics, and of course learn some along the
way as well.
Regarding SAS, if you feel you shouldnt be required to learn SAS in STAT 501, the
individuals that need to hear this are NOT in the STAT department. They are those that are
responsible for determining that you take STAT 501 (IE Who told you to take 501?). Some
departments offer alternate courses, as far as the STAT department is concerned 501 will be taught
using SAS (See Computing below).
