A. Fire-Rated, Fire Protection Cabinets: Listed and labeled to comply with requirements in ASTM E
814 for fire-resistance rating of walls where they are installed.
B. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, by a
qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application.
C. Pre-installation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site.
1. Review methods and procedures related to fire protection cabinets including, but not limited to,
the following:
a. Schedules and coordination requirements.
1.6 Coordination
A. Coordinate size of fire protection cabinets to ensure that type and capacity of fire extinguishers
indicated are accommodated.
B. Coordinate size of fire protection cabinets to ensure that type and capacity of fire hoses, hose
valves, and hose racks indicated are accommodated.
C. Coordinate sizes and locations of fire protection cabinets with wall depths.
1.7 Sequencing
A. Apply vinyl lettering on field-painted, fire protection cabinets after painting is complete.
Part 2 - Products
2.1 Materials
A. Cold-Rolled Steel Sheet: ASTM A 1008/A 1008M, Commercial Steel (CS), Type B.
2.2 Fire Protection Cabinet
A. Cabinet Type: Suitable for fire hose, rack, and valve.
1. Products: Subject to compliance with requirements.
B. Cabinet Construction: 2-hour fire rated.
1. Fire-Rated Cabinets: Construct fire-rated cabinets with double walls fabricated from 0.0428inch- (1.1-mm-) thick, cold-rolled steel sheet lined with minimum 5/8-inch- (16-mm-) thick, firebarrier material. Provide factory-drilled mounting holes.
C. Cabinet Material: Steel sheet.
1. Shelf: Same metal and finish as cabinet.
D. Recessed Cabinet: Cabinet box recessed in walls of sufficient depth to suit style of trim indicated.
1. Trim less with Concealed Flange: Surface of surrounding wall finishes flush with exterior
finished surface of cabinet frame and door, without overlapping trim attached to cabinet.
Provide recessed flange, of same material as box, attached to box to act as plaster stop or
drywall bead.
2. Exposed Flat Trim: One-piece combination trim and perimeter door frame overlapping
surrounding wall surface with exposed trim face and wall return at outer edge (backbend).

5) Alarm: Manufacturer's standard alarm that actuates when fire protection cabinet door
is opened and that is powered by low voltage, complete with transformer.

1. Manufacturer's standard baked-enamel paint for the following:
a. Exterior of cabinet door, and trim except for those surfaces indicated to receive another
finish.
b. Interior of cabinet and door.
2. Steel: Factory primed for field painting, or baked enamel or powder coat.
2.3 Security Fire Protection Cabinet
A. Cabinet Type: Suitable for fire hose, rack, valve, and extinguisher.

2.4 Fabrication
A. Fire Protection Cabinets: Provide manufacturer's standard box (tub) with trim, frame, door, and
hard ware to suit cabinet type, trim style, and door style indicated.
1. Weld joints and grind smooth.
2. Provide factory-drilled mounting holes.
3. Prepare doors and frames to receive locks.
4. Install door locks at factory.
B. Cabinet Doors: Fabricate doors according to manufacturer's standards, from materials indicated
and coordinated with cabinet types and trim styles selected.
1. Fabricate door frames with tubular stiles and rails and hollow-metal design, minimum inch
(13 mm) thick.
2. Fabricate door frames of one-piece construction with edges flanged.
3. Miter and weld perimeter door frames.
C. Cabinet Trim: Fabricate cabinet trim in one piece with corners mitered, welded, and ground
smooth.
2.5 General Finish Requirements
A. Comply with NAAMM's "Metal Finishes Manual for Architectural and Metal Products" for
recommendations for applying and designating finishes.
B. Protect mechanical finishes on exposed surfaces of fire protection cabinets from damage by
applying a strippable, temporary protective covering before shipping.
C. Finish fire protection cabinets after assembly.
D. Appearance of Finished Work: Noticeable variations in same piece are not acceptable. Variations
in appearance of adjoining components are acceptable if they are within the range of approved
Samples and are assembled or installed to minimize contrast.
E. Baked-Enamel or Powder-Coat Finish: AAMA 2603 except with a minimum dry film thickness of
1.5 mils (0.04 mm). Comply with coating manufacturer's written instructions for cleaning,
conversion coating, and applying and baking finish.
1. Color and Gloss: As indicated by manufacturer's designations and match Architect's sample.
As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range.
2.6 Steel Finishes
A. Surface Preparation: Remove mill scale and rust, if present, from uncoated steel, complying with
SSPC-SP 5/NACE No. 1, "White Metal Blast Cleaning" or SSPC-SP 8, "Pickling" Insert surface
preparation method. After cleaning, apply a conversion coating suited to the organic coating to be
applied over it.
B. Factory Prime Finish: Apply manufacturer's standard, fast-curing, lead- and chromate-free,
universal primer immediately after surface preparation and pretreatment.
C. Baked-Enamel or Powder-Coat Finish: Immediately after cleaning and pre-treating, apply
manufacturer's standard two-coat, baked-on finish consisting of prime coat and thermosetting top
coat. Comply with coating manufacturer's written instructions for applying and baking to achieve a
minimum dry film thickness of 2 mils (0.05 mm).

1. Color and Gloss: As indicated by manufacturer's designations and match Architect's sample.
As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range.
Part 3 - Execution
3.1 Examination
A. Examine roughing-in for hose valves, racks and cabinets to verify actual locations of piping
connections before cabinet installation.
B. Examine walls and partitions for suitable framing depth and blocking where recessed and semi
recessed cabinets will be installed.
C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 Preparation
A. Prepare recesses for recessed and semi-recessed fire protection cabinets as required by type and
size of cabinet and trim style.
3.3 Installation
A. General: Install fire protection cabinets in locations and at mounting heights indicated, if not
indicated, at heights indicated below: or at heights acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.
A. Fire Protection Cabinets: 54 inches (1372 mm) above finished floor to top of cabinet.
B. Fire Protection Cabinets: Fasten cabinets to structure, square and plumb.
1. Unless otherwise indicated, provide recessed fire protection cabinets. If wall thickness is not
adequate for recessed cabinets, provide semi-recessed fire protection cabinets.
2. Provide inside latch and lock for break-glass panels.
3. Fasten mounting brackets to inside surface of fire protection cabinets, square and plumb.
4. Fire-Rated, Hose and Valve Cabinets:
a. Install cabinet with not more than 1/16-inch (1.6-mm) tolerance between pipe OD and
knockout OD. Center pipe within knockout.
b. Seal through penetrations with fire stopping sealant.
C. Identification: Apply vinyl lettering at locations indicated.
3.4 Adjusting and Cleaning
A. Remove temporary protective coverings and strippable films, if any, as fire protection cabinets are
installed unless otherwise indicated in manufacturer's written installation instructions.
B. Adjust fire protection cabinet doors to operate easily without binding. Verify that integral locking
devices operate properly.
C. On completion of fire protection cabinet installation, clean interior and exterior surfaces as
recommended by manufacturer.
D. Touch up marred finishes, or replace fire protection cabinets that cannot be restored to factory
finished appearance. Use only materials and procedures recommended or furnished by fire
protection cabinet and mounting bracket manufacturers.

E. Replace fire protection cabinets that have been damaged or have deteriorated beyond successful
repair by finish touchup or similar minor repair procedures.

1.7 Coordination
A. Coordinate type and capacity of fire extinguishers with fire protection cabinets to ensure fit and
function.
1.8 Warranty
A. Special Warranty: Manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair or replace
fire extinguishers that fails in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.
1. Failures include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. Failure of hydrostatic test according to NFPA 10.
b. Faulty operation of valves or release levers.
2. Warranty Period: one year from date of Substantial Completion.
Part 2 - Products
2.1 Portable, Hand-Carried Fire Extinguishers
A. Fire Extinguishers: Type, size, and capacity for each fire protection cabinet mounting bracket, fire
protection cabinet and mounting bracket indicated.
1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements.
2. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide product indicated
on Drawings, or comparable product by one of the following:
a. Amerex Corporation.
b. Ansul Incorporated; Tyco International Ltd.
c. Badger Fire Protection; a Kidde company.

B. CO2 Type, UL-rated @ 6 kg nominal capacity in manufacturer's standard enameled container.
C. Multipurpose Dry-Chemical Type: UL-rated @ 3 kg & 6 kg nominal capacity, with mono ammonium
phosphate-based dry chemical in manufacturer's standard enameled container.
2.2 Mounting Brackets
A. Mounting Brackets: Manufacturer's standard galvanized steel, designed to secure fire extinguisher
to wall or structure, of sizes required for types and capacities of fire extinguishers indicated, with
plated or red baked-enamel finish.

with requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

A. General Requirements for Manufactured Pipe Labels: Preprinted, color-coded, with lettering
indicating service and showing flow direction.
B. Pre-tensioned Pipe Labels: Pre-coiled, semi rigid plastic formed to partially cover circumference of
pipe and to attach to pipe without fasteners or adhesive.
C. Self-Adhesive Pipe Labels: Printed plastic with contact-type, permanent-adhesive backing.
D. Pipe-Label Contents: Include identification of piping service using same designations or
abbreviations as used on Drawings; pipe size; and an arrow indicating flow direction.
1. Flow-Direction Arrows: Integral with piping-system service lettering to accommodate both
direction or as separate unit on each pipe label to indicate flow direction.
2. Lettering Size: At least 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) high.
E. Pipe-Label Colors:
1. Background Color: Red.

2.4 Stencils
A. Stencils: Prepared with letter sizes according to ASME A13.1 for piping; and minimum letter height
of 3/4 inch (19 mm) for access panel and door labels, equipment labels, and similar operational
instructions.

2. Stencil Paint: Exterior, gloss, alkyd enamel or acrylic enamel black unless otherwise indicated.
Paint may be in pressurized spray-can form.

2.5 Valve Tags
A. Valve Tags: Stamped or engraved with 1/4-inch (6.4-mm) letters for piping-system abbreviation
and 1/2-inch (13-mm) numbers.
1. Tag Material: stainless steel, 0.025 inch (0.64 mm) or aluminum, 0.032 inch (0.8 mm) thick,
with predrilled holes for attachment hardware.
2. Fasteners: Brass beaded chain or S-hook.
3. Valve-Tag Color: Red.
4. Letter Color: White.
B. Valve Schedules: For each piping system, on 8-1/2-by-11-inch (A4) bond paper. Tabulate valve
number, piping system, system abbreviation (as shown on valve tag), location of valve (room or
space), normal-operating position (open, closed, or modulating), and variations for identification.
Mark valves for emergency shutoff and similar special uses.
1. Valve-tag schedule shall be included in operation and maintenance data.
2.6 Warning Tags
A. Warning Tags: Preprinted or partially preprinted, accident-prevention tags, of plasticized card stock
with matte finish suitable for writing.
1. Size: Approximately 4 by 7 inches (100 by 178 mm).
2. Fasteners: Reinforced grommet and wire or string.

E. NFPA Compliance: Comply with NFPA 24 for materials, installations, tests, flushing, and valve and
hydrant supervision for fire-suppression water-service piping.
1.6 Delivery, Storage, and Handling
A. Preparation for Transport: Prepare valves, including fire hydrants, according to the following:
1. Ensure that valves are dry and internally protected against rust and corrosion.
2. Protect valves against damage to threaded ends and flange faces.
3. Set valves in best position for handling. Set valves closed to prevent rattling.
B. During Storage: Use precautions for valves, including fire hydrants, according to the following:
1. Do not remove end protectors unless necessary for inspection; then reinstall for storage.
2. Protect from weather. Store indoors and maintain temperature higher than ambient dew point
temperature. Support off the ground or pavement in watertight enclosures when outdoor
storage is necessary.
C. Handling: Use sling to handle valves and fire hydrants if size requires handling by crane or lift. Rig
valves to avoid damage to exposed parts. Do not use hand wheels or stems as lifting or rigging
points.
D. Deliver piping with factory-applied end caps. Maintain end caps through shipping, storage, and
handling to prevent pipe-end damage and to prevent entrance of dirt, debris, and moisture.
E. Protect stored piping from moisture and dirt. Elevate above grade. Do not exceed structural
capacity of floor when storing inside.
F. Protect flanges, fittings, and specialties from moisture and dirt.
G. Store plastic piping protected from direct sunlight. Support to prevent sagging and bending.
1.7 Project Conditions
A. Interruption of Existing Fire-Suppression Water-Service Piping: Do not interrupt service to facilities
occupied by Owner or others unless permitted under the following conditions and then only after
arranging to provide temporary water-distribution service according to requirements indicated:
1. Notify Construction Manager and Owner no fewer than 7 days in advance of proposed
interruption of service.
2. Do not proceed with interruption of service without Construction Manager' and Owner's written
permission.
1.8 Coordination
A. Coordinate connection to water main with utility company.

Part 3 - Execution
3.1 Piping Installation
A. Water-Main Connection: Arrange with water utility company for tap of size and in location indicated
in water main.
B. Water-Main Connection: Tap water main according to requirements of water utility company and of
size and in location indicated.
C. Make connections larger than NPS 2 (DN 50) with tapping machine according to the following:
1. Install tapping sleeve and tapping valve according to MSS SP-60.
2. Install tapping sleeve on pipe to be tapped. Position flanged outlet for gate valve.
3. Use tapping machine compatible with valve and tapping sleeve; cut hole in main. Remove
tapping machine and connect water-service piping.
4. Install gate valve onto tapping sleeve. Comply with MSS SP-60. Install valve with stem
pointing up and with valve box.
D. Make connections NPS 2 (DN 50) and smaller with drilling machine according to the following:
1. Install service-saddle assemblies and corporation valves in size, quantity, and arrangement
required by utility company's standards.
2. Install service-saddle assemblies on water-service pipe to be tapped. Position outlets for
corporation valves.
3. Use drilling machine compatible with service-saddle assemblies and corporation valves. Drill
hole in main. Remove drilling machine and connect water-service piping.
4. Install corporation valves into service-saddle assemblies.
5. Install manifold for multiple taps in water main.

3.6 Fire Department Connection Installation
A. Install ball drip valves at each check valve for fire-department connection to mains.
B. Install protective pipe bollards on two sides of each fire-department connection.
3.7 Alarm Device Installation
A. General: Comply with NFPA 24 for devices and methods of valve supervision. Underground valves
with valve box do not require supervision.
