Poll Results confirm Toronto residents are opposed to privatizing garbage
collection East of Yonge Street

TORONTO, ON (January 9, 2017) Last month, CUPE Local 416 commissioned an
independently conducted fact-based city-wide poll to gauge the publics opinion on
Mayor Torys initiative to privatize garbage collection east of Yonge Street.

The results confirm that the public is overwhelmingly opposed to the privatization of
garbage collection east of Yonge Street. The poll measured the publics opinion on
garbage collection through two cohorts (residents East and West of Yonge Street). The
poll found that residents throughout the city (both East and West of Yonge Street)
expressed similar support for public garbage collection with over 66 per cent of decided
voters East of Yonge and 60 per cent West of Yonge being opposed to privatization. In
addition, it found that an overwhelming 79 per cent of residents prefer the current
mixed model or an entirely public approach to garbage collection across the City of
Toronto.

These poll results confirm what we have been saying for years: residents of Toronto
want garbage collection to remain public. Said Matt Figliano, Vice President CUPE Local
416. City employees have been providing this important service for the past 100 years
and have been doing a great job. They should be able to continue to provide great
service to the residents of Toronto.

The poll was conducted as part of the Kicked to the Curb public relations campaign
launched by Local 416 that includes grassroots advocacy, and radio ads that highlight
the facts about garbage collection in Toronto and promote the hard-working members
of CUPE Local 416.
