When time is limited, as in an exam, it is

important to know exactly what you have to look

advantages and disadvantages of home
schooling. Discuss the students ideas as
a class, but do not give all the answers away

Students use the expressions given in the essay

to write an alternative conclusion, arguing for
traditional schools.

MODEL ANSWER
Although home schooling has many
advantages, in my opinion, traditional schools
are a better form of education. School is not
just about learning information or studying for
exams. Above all, it is the time when you learn
to live in society and deal with other people.
Going to school with other children is the best
way of learning how to do this and obtaining
a full education.

Students read the essay. Ask them if any of their

ideas from 1 were mentioned.

Tune in to Culture (page 21)

This Tune in to Culture page, Having a discussion, expands on the discussion work of the unit.
It focuses on having a small group discussion.

Students work alone, reading the statements

and deciding on their own opinions.

Students then decide which statements they are

most interested in, and number the statements
1-10 depending on how interested they are in
the topic (10 = most interesting, 1 = least
interesting).

Divide students into groups of four. Together

they decide which three statements they are
most interested in as a group.

In each group, one pair of students thinks

of arguments agreeing with their chosen
statements, while the other pair thinks of
arguments disagreeing with these statements.
Allow a few minutes for brainstorming
in pairs. Emphasise to students that they
are not necessarily giving their personal
opinions here. They are just assembling
for or against arguments.
When both pairs are ready, the group come
together and discuss the statements they have
chosen, using the arguments the pairs have
produced. When the discussions end,
ask the students who they thought had the
strongest arguments and why.
