Official statement: Noynoy on Sulpicio Lines’ calls to lift the suspension on » Issues
Donate their passenger vessels, July 30, 2008

Invest in our nation's future Article 1755 of the Civil Code of the Philippines states that “a common
carrier is bound to carry the passengers safely as far as human care and Stay Connected
foresight can provide, using the utmost diligence of very cautious persons,
with a due regard for all the circumstances.” It further suggests that if the Leave your email to receive our

developments, and keep up to date
safely, the carrier and the driver is presumed to be at fault.
Let us help you decide on the latest news about Noynoy,
Sulpicio Lines, Inc. (SLI) is the owner of the MV Princess of the Stars, which the elections, and the issues that
sank on June 21 at the height of typhoon “Frank”. Only 56 of the more than face the nation.
860 people aboard the ship survived. Prior to this incident, SLI had already
figured in 44 sea accidents ranging from sinking, collisions, grounding, Email Address:
engine problems and fire since 1980. Its dismal record notwithstanding, SLI
has continued to operate its passenger vessels with impunity and has
allegedly been cleared of any criminal responsibility for the deaths of
thousands of passengers.

On June 26, the government ordered the grounding of SLI’s passenger

vessels as part of its on-going investigation. SLI filed a motion early this
week to lift the suspension on its passenger vessels while hearings of the
Maritime Industry Authority are still underway. SLI officials cited having
already incurred huge losses in revenues as their basis.

Is this not a callous act by a company supposedly at fault for failing to

convey its passengers safely to their destination?

Considering that it has been involved in a number of sea tragedies in the

past, would it not be prudent for SLI to seek a complete and thorough
investigation to prove to the people that it deserves its franchise?

The investigation on the sinking of the MV Princess of the Stars is not yet
over. What went wrong and which party was negligent of its duty have yet to
be firmly established. How can SLI seek resumption of its operations when
its culpability, and those of the other concerned parties, are still under
question?

Is this not an act that defeats the purpose of the investigation of preventing
a similar tragedy from happening again? In the absence of closure, how can
SLI prove that innocent lives that will be entrusted under their care are in
fact in safe hands?

If it were a company that is sincerely committed to its social responsibility, as

it has persistently claimed, SLI should be standing front and center in the
process of determining the causes of the mishap that led to a massive loss
of life.

Perhaps, if it had consciously and willingly done so in the past, this most
recent tragedy might have been prevented.
