1. INTRODUCTION
The objective of this study is to know about media. The emphasis is on new media and its features
and how social media is affecting fashion industry and a persons style of dressing.
Also, I have conducted a survey. The population is generally ranging from 18-50 years, out of which I
have got my questionarre filled from approx 90-100 people. E-commerce companies also play a
major role. They pay the social media so that customers get popups for certain ads.

1. Media
It is an all-encompassing term that refers to a collective of communicatory mediums used to store or
transmit information or data. The main types of media: print media, broadcast media, and the
Internet.

1.1 Print Media

The oldest media forms are newspapers, magazines, journals, newsletters, and other printed
material. These publications are known as the print media. Print media readership has declined in
the last few decades.

1.2 Broadcast Media

These are news reports broadcast via radio and television. Television news is hugely important in
any country because they get most of the news from television broadcasts.Broadcast media today is
portable source of entertainment and information .

1.3New Media
Means of mass communication using digital technologies such as the Internet.

New Media
We live in an age of rapid technological changes. Every day we are flooded with information from
everywhere. The internet makes sure that we are not left behind in terms of information .In the
process of news gathering and writing, the advent of computers along with the phenomenon of the
internet has introduced the concept of new media. Unlike the print media, the new media does not
rely merely on the written word for communication.
Social media has a great hand in new media .They play a crucial role in fashion industry too.

Characteristics of New Media

New media refers to a wide range of changes in media production, distribution and use. These
are more than technological changes, they are also textual, convention and cultural.
1.Digitality
2.Interactivity
3.Hypertexuality
4.Virtuality
Digitality:
New media are often referred to digital new media because the process is done through
computer. In terms of communication and representational media , data usually takes the form of
qualities such as light or sound or represented space which have already been coded into a
cultural form (analogue form), such as written text, graphs and diagrams, photographs, images,
etc
Interactivity:
Interactivity is one of the key value added characteristics of new media as it offers opportunities
for making connections between individuals, within organisations and individuals and
organisations.
Hypertext:
It can be defined as a work which is made up from discrete units of material in which each one
carries a number of pathways to other units. The work is a web of connection where the user
explores the navigational aids of the interface design.
Virtuality:
Virtual in reality is applied to several different forms of media and image technologies
simultaneously. It describes the immersion in an environment constructed with computer graphics
and digital video with which the user has some degree of interaction.

1.4 Social Media

It is also a form of new media. It is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to
community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration.
Because social media is such a broad term, it covers a large range of websites.
Common forms of social media are:
1. Social networks: These sites allow people to build personal web pages and then connect with friends to
share content and communication. For eg: MySpace, Facebook, Bebo.

( 1.4.a Facebook logo)

(1.4.b Bebo logo)

2. Blogs: Perhaps the best known form of social media, blogs are online journals, with entries
appearing with the most recent first.

(1.4.C BLOG )
3. Wikis: These websites allow people to add content to or edit the information on them, acting as a
communal document or database. The best-known wiki is Wikipedia.
7

(1.4.d Wikipedia logo)

4. Podcasts: Audio and video files that are available by subscription, through services like Apple
iTunes.

(1.4.e Itunes logo)

5. Forums: Areas for online discussion, often around specific topics and interests.

(1.4.f gentoo forums)

6. Content communities: Communities which organise and share particular kinds of content. For
examplle: flickr, bookmarked links (del.icio.us) and videos (YouTube).

7. Microblogging: Social networking combined with bite-sized blogging, where small amounts of
content updates are distributed online and through the mobile phone network. For eg: Twitter

2. ADVANTAGES OF NEW MEDIA

There are a lot of advantages of new media, for instant we can tweet and check our status
updates on facebook from our phones.

We have the whole internet in the back of our pocket. We have the news channels such as
RTE, Sky News, Fox and CNN

We can directly call people using skype free calls

We can create media ourselves with the internet we can create our own blogs and post our
views of global events.

Apple have released Icloud this allows to work from oour Ipads or Iphones and it sends our updates
on presentation on our computers, if we downloas music or take pictures on the I-phone they will be
on our home computer. We can see that the medium of new media is the internet and it has control
over us because of the amount of hours we spend on it a day.

3. DISADVANTAGES OF NEW MEDIA

Although social media has connected us with people all over the world, but this has affected
our face to face communication.

Now a days, people are preferring communicating through social media rather than face to
face and this have increased the online relationships.

Wherever you go now, you can realize how people are sitting together physically, but using
their smart -phones communicating with others, so eventually they are mentally not together.

This will affect our lives in a way or another, for instance, in business life you will not be able
and not have the experience to communicate with employers and consumers and this will
obviously affect your job.
Moreover, it has hacked our lives and privacy. For example, now a days through the social
media you can know details about a person just by entering their account in any application.
Seeing pictures where he/she has went, what have they done, and etc. You can't anymore
have privacy like before and have your own life, you always feel like you to share it with
others.
In conclusion, people are easily engaging with technology and you can rarely find people who
do not use any type of the new media. It is been a trend, a useful one, and will always be,
however people should always know that everything needs limits and so the new media.

4. SARAI PROJECT
In 2000, Sarai, the New Media Initiative of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS),
set up a public access space for the research and practice of digital media in Delhi, one of the first of
its kind in the developing world. The Sarai program includes a digital archive of urban culture, a
network of public terminals with a specially designed interface, and a media lab, which provides a
technological context for collaborations and creations by artists and other involved individuals. The
Daniel Langlois Foundation supported the Media Lab component of the Sarai initiative. Its
contribution was directed toward acquiring hardware and software and creating research fellowships.
The Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, founded in 1964, is one of India's best-known
independent research institutes. Bringing together some of South Asia's most distinguished thinkers
and writers, the CSDS has played an important part in shaping the intellectual and creative map of
10

this part of the world. Sarai, the New Media Initiative, is a program of the CSDS dedicated to
exploring new technologies in South Asia.

5. METHODOLOGY
My topic for the study is new media, first I have studied what is media and the different types of
media .Then I have studied about what is new media, characteristics, advantages and
disadvantages. New media also consists of social media which is the most popular media which
consists of social networking sites. So I have conducted a survey on how social media is influencing
ones fashion sense and how fashion industry is influenced by it .The survey which I have conducted
is an online survey ,so I have got 90-100 responses.

The first question in my questionnaire is what is the age of the respondent, which tell us about the
personality of the respondent.

Next question was whether the respondent has an account in social networking sites, from this
question we can get to know if the respondent is socially connected or not.

The third question is whether the respondent likes the pages of fashion brands and couture houses
or retailers this helps us to know about if the respondent is fashion concerned or not. Next question
how they get to know about the fashion trends, brands etc. from this we can know about the
respondents interest in fashion.

Fifth and sixth questions are do they follow fashion trends from social media and do they follow
fashion blogs this shows their fashion sense and their interest.

Next questions will get us know about the knowledge of respondents about social media and then
ninth question was whether people shop according to fashion trend this shows they really follow
fashion. The last question was at which time the respondent maximum use their social media.
