Kalamansig is a coastal town located in the province of Sultan Kudarat with its own
hidden gems, such as the six islets lying nearby to it. One of these islets is Balut
Island, one of Mindanaos well-kept secrets.
Balut Island and the other islets of Kalamansig are sparsely-populated havens, with
vivid, blue-green waters and long stretches of white sand. For beach lovers, a
stopover to Kalamansig and its islets is a must.
Here are six reasons to visit Kalamansig:
1. Balut Island
Balut or Balot Island is one of the six islets in Kalamansig, located in Brgy. Paril. The
islands name comes from its land shape that resembled an egg. Its an hour-long
boat ride from the fish port of the town. In fair weather, you can expect clear azure
waters and powdery white sand. The island is mostly uninhabited, with only a few
households of the indigenous people of Manobo and Tausug. In respect to the beliefs
of the locals especially to the Tausug, its best not to bring pork to the island.
2. The White Beaches
You can fill up your quota for the beautiful white sand beaches in Kalamansig alone.
Visit Labac White Beach and Tayandac White Beach for that idyllic beach vacation.
Another great place to visit would be Purok Mangga, which is only several minutes
away from Balut Island, and has the same white beaches. In fact, making a visit to
Purok Mangga is a must before going to Balut Island to coordinate with the elders
there and register at the visitors logbook.
3. Sangay-Paril Seascape
The islets of Kalamansig actually belong to a larger area, the protected marine area
of the Sangay-Paril seascape. Similar to Balot Island, there are plenty of white sandy
beaches, mangroves and coral reefs. For those whod like to see their first sighting
of marine creatures such as pawikan (sea turtles), dugong (sea cows) and butanding
(whale sharks), the Sangay-Paril Seascape is a good starting point.
4. Island-Hopping
As mentioned, there are six islets to explore in Kamalig alone. Apart from Balut,
theres Donuang Island and Tubo-tubo Islands. Ask the locals around for diving spots
in those areas.
5. Simsiman Hot Spring

If youre tired of swimming in the beach, you can relax in the hot waters of
Simsiman Hot Spring instead. This is one of Kalamansigs natural attractions,
although many people not from Sultan Kudarat arent familiar with the hot springs.
6. Mangroves and Limestone
If you take boat rides to explore the islets of Kalamansig, part of the perks of the
trip are the scenic views of the limestone cliffs and the fascinating rock formations
that form part of the coastal scenery of the town. The view is even more stunning
during sunset and sunrise.
Not many people are aware of the hidden gems of the South, and Kalamansig is one
of them. The coastal municipality of Sultan Kudarat has plenty of adventure and
beauty within.
