6. ESCALATOR PROTECTION DEVICES
1) Phase failure protection:
As phaseless or wrong phase, the phase contactor actuates to stop the escalator.
2) Overload protection device of the motor
When the motor is overloaded and the temperation of the motor coil is too high, the guard actuates to stop the escalator.
3) Step chain breakage or extension protection
While the step chain is broken or it is elongated, the guard actuates to stop the escalator.
4) Comb plate protection
While the step is running to the comb, if there is something intercalated, the guard actuates to stop the escalator.
5

5) Handrail inlet protection

While the handrail is running to the inlet, if a finger is intercalated, the guard actuates to stop the escalator.
6) Step sinking protection
If the step is sinking, and thus the clearance between the step and the comb at the throat can not meet the requirement, the switch will
cut the safety circuit to stop the escalator.
7) Skirt board clearance protection
If something is intercalated between skirt board and step edge, this device actuates to stop the escalator.
8) Motor speed monitor
If the speed is less than 80% of the rated or more than 120% of the rated, or in case of non-operational reverse, the guard actuates to
stop the escalator.
9) Emergency stop button
There are emergency stop buttons on the skirt board at the inlet and outlet.
10) Drive chain breakage protecion
If the drive chain is broken suddenly, the brake actuates to stop the escalator.
11) Auxiliary brake device
6

When drive chain is broken or slides for about 1.5m, the auxiliary brake actuates. If rise height is more than 6m, auxiliary brake must
be installed.
12)Step interstice light
The green light may remind passengers of being care of the interstice between the steps.
13)Step yellow line
Remind the passengers of keeping far away from the skirt board
14)Handrail speed protection
If the handrail speed is less than the step speed, the system will ring for 3times as alarm while continuing running. (option)
15Passenger conveyor footplate switch
If the footplate is loose or fallen down, upper and lower swith actuate;
16)Step anti-jumping switch
When some obstacle on the steps, the steps jump heavyly.
7. Intelligent escalators advantages
We find that the efficiency of the escalator without intelligent control is 50%, when it is in usual running. Because that it is working all
the time, even if no man take it. Lets compare non-intelligent escalator with the intelligent one. Hereinafter:

Operation Instruction

1. ESCALATOR START
Start in motor-winding and star-connection. Running in connection in rated speed.
2.RUNNING MODE:
1)Inspection running mode:
8

(1) Pull out the accessorial plug in the uper or the lower cabinet, and put on the inspection box plug, take the inspection box in hand.
(2) Switch on QS1 and check the fuse inside Fu1, Fu2, Fu3, Fu4 and Fu5

(3)When the safety circuit is working well the fault display board show running state, and PC supplies stable power make sure
it displays RUN. Pull out the switch ST in the inspection box, press SU or SD button. The process order is like this KMB
KMU(KMD)KC1SGBRunning as required.
2Normal running mode
(1 ) Make sure that both accessorial plugs are inserted.
(2) Switch on QS1 and check the fuse inside Fu1, Fu2, Fu3, Fu4 and Fu5
(3) When the safety circuit is working wellthe fault display board shows running state and PC supplies stable power, make sure it
displays RUN insert start key. The process is like this KMBKMU(KMD)KC1SGBRunning as required.
3).Intelligent running mode
This mode is just for the escaltors with intelligent functions. This kind of escalators have all the functions of the normal escalator.
(1)Simple running mode
It is a mode of normal escalators without atuo-start sensor. Put the key into the keyhole and turn it to the direction of the excalators
tendency ONCE and the escalator starts.
9

(2)Economic running mode (only for VF ones)

Only for VF escalators with autostarting sensors. Put the key into the keyhole and turn it to the direction of the excalator working
TWICE, then the escalator is going in the economic mode. If no man intrude the inspection area for 60s, it slows down, until
somebody press the stop button. Once somebody intrudes the inspection area, escalator will run in high speed.(those starting in
star-angle do not have this running mode)
(3)One-way running mode
Only for those with auto-start sensors. Insert the key and turn it to the excalators tendency THREE TIMES, then the escalator is
starting up from low speed to high speed. If no man intrude the inspection area for 60s, it will automatically stop. When people take
the right direction, the escalator will start in low speed and then run in full ; if people take the opposite direction, the escalator will run
in low speed for 15 seconds and then automatically stop and inform passengers the wrong direction. To manually stop the escalator
and cancel the intelligent funcions, please press the stop button.
(4)Two-way running mode
Only for those with auto-start sensors. Insert the key and turn it to the direction of the excalators tendency FOUR TIMES, then the
escalator is starting up from low speed to high speed. If no man intrude the inspection area for 60s, it will automatically stop. If the
upside sensor receive signals, the escalator will run downwards. If the downside sensor receive signals, it will run upwards. To
10

manually stop the escalator and cancel the intelligent funcions, please press the stop button.
Note: Changing order of running modes is like this: Simpleeconomicone-way intelligenttwo-way intelligent. It can not be
reversed. If it must be degraded, please press stop button and restart.
3. Travel direction light
There are direction indication lights on both sides: the red warns passenger not to take it; the green one indicates passengers can take
it.
4. Brake modes
a. Emergency brake: When stop button is pressed, or contactors of safety loop actuate, or step defection monitor actuates, or escalator
speed monitor actuates, emergency stop will take place. Clasp actuates meanwhile power cuts off.
b. Order brake (only for VF escalators): When it is running, insert the key and rotate it in any direction, keeping 5s. Release it until
the bell stop ringing. Thus order brake is set up. If escalator is in stop or slow condition, clasp actuates meanwhile power cuts off.
If escalator is in high speed condition, it will slow down, then clasp actuates meanwhile power cuts off.

2.Escalator Speed Meter

Speed meter sensor connects 0000 with 0001 in PC; 0000 and 0001 light on when step wheel approaches the sensor.
In normal running, the step speed meter sensor generates two pulses per second.
In underspeed running, intervals of pulse generation become longer. Before the interval is longer than normal interval by 20%, PC
cuts off output. At the next start, the bell rings once to remind workers of the malfunction.
In overspeed running, intervals of pulse generation become shorter. Before the interval is 80% of normal interval, PC cuts off
output. At the next start, the bell rings once to remind workers of the malfunction.
Non-operational reverse prevention: When operating on the escalator normally but actually it runs in the oppsosite direction. PC
will inspect the alternated signals from 0000 and 0001 and cut off output. Thus clasp actuates to stop the escalator. At the next start,
the bell rings twice to remind workers of the malfunction.
Overspeed, underspeed and anti-reverse functions are still of effect during inspection running.
13

Before leaving factory, all escalators have been through step speed measuring test and anti-reverse test. But the voltage difference
beween factory and installation place may lead to step speed difference. So after installation it is required to take self-learning.( for
self-learning method read item 4.10)
Note: Assure a regular power supply with a waving tolerance ranging 7%+7%.
3.Methods of Inspections on Overspeed/Underspeed Sensors and anti-reverse protection.
(1)Underspeed: Block any one step speed sensor to make it can not generate signals( may remove terminal leads A02 or A03 in the
control cabinet), then undertake self-learning. During normal running, make the other speed sensor can not generate signals(may
remove another lead in the cabinet). When motor winding turns into connection, PLC system will cut off output as underspeed
state. At the next start, the bell rings once to remind workers of the malfunction.
(2)Overspeed: Block any one step speed sensor to make it can not generate signals( may remove terminal leads A02 or A03 in the
control cabinet), then undertake self-learning. During normal running, block quickly the other sensor to make it generate more signals
than usual(may spot connect A01 with the unremoved signal lead). When motor winding turns into connection, PLC system will
cut off output as underspeed state. At the next start, the bell rings once to remind workers of the malfunction.
(3)During self-learning, if one or both of them do not generate signals, the system will automatically leave one or two sensors and will
not inspect the signals any more. When one or both sensors leaves, the bell will ring once indicating that speed signals are not
14

complete. If only one sensor breaks down, it will not affect the normal running. Only when both sensos break down, system will
automatically stop the escalator. At the next start, the bell rings once to remind workers of the malfunction.
(4)Anti-reverse inspection: Only when both signals are being inspected and phase difference is 90, can anti-reverse function realise.
In stop state, exchange terminal leads A02 and A03, that is to break the default phase difference. After running a while escalator will
automatically stop and ring twice indicating reverse fault. At the next start, the bell rings twice to remind workers of the malfunction.
If auxiliary brake is fitted, it will actuate. Otherwise, after running a while if the bell ring only once, it means anti-reverse function has
not realised yet.
(5)Handrail underspeed inspection(optional): Each handrail has a sensor monitoring the handrail running speed. After each adjustment
on handrail, self-learning shall be reset( handrail speed self-learning and step speed self-learning shall be undertook at the same time).
If non-signal is inspected during self-learning, handrail speed will not be inspected afterwards. If one hanrail speed decreases, system
will identify this and ring three times indicating handrail underspeed. Escalator can still continue running. To inspect, remove one or
both of terminal leads A04 and A05. When escalator runs in rated speed it will identify handrail underspeed and ring 3 times
indicating underspeed. But it continues running.
Note: Take care at inspection; after experiments restore all the signal leads and sensors.

4. Fault Display Screen (XS-B)

a) Fault displays rated voltage is AC8V or AC110V.
b) When safety loop gets through,

is displayed, the inside relays GKC and GKC1 pull in to connect terminal B11 with

terminal B12.
c) When the switch in the safety loop actuate, corresponding fault codes are displayed on screen. (see diagram)
5. After leaving factory escalators are affected by these factors: transportation, shipping, construction, etc. So before installation, these
components shall be readjusted: skirt clearance, skirting switch, comb teeth, comb switch, etc.
6. Alarm functions are equiped in control panel.
7. In normal running, insert the key and rotate it, then bell rings and escalator stops. Pull out the key, then the bell stops and escalator
continues running.
8. In inspection running: Press the button for first time, the bell rings and escalator stops. Press the button for second time, bell stops
and escalator continues. Interval between first time and second shall not be longer than 3seconds, or memory will be cancelled.
9. In intelligent running: Insert the key and rotate it in required direction. Bell rings and escalator stops. Pull out the key, bell stops
and escalator runs in simple mode; rotate again, it is in economic mode; the third time in one-way mode; the fourth time in two-way
17

mode. (The last three-time rotating directions comply with simple mode direction.)
10. Instruction on self-learning:
Following is self-learning method: In 5s after start rotate the key in one direction until bell stops ringing. Escalator begins to
automatically identify the step speed sensor and handrail speed sensor and autostarting sensor at the throat. If the received signals are
not complete during self-learning(non-signal or only one signal is received), afterwards the system will not inspect the devices whose
signals are not inspected. When it is up to rated speed the bell rings once indicating anti-reverse function and speed meter function are
not realised or not completed.
Self-learning on intelligent autostarting sensors:
Intelligent stop time setting. Defaut intelligent stop time is 60s. To change the time, after self-learning(bell stops ringing), block
once the auto sensor at the under inlet, go upwards by the escalator. Bell rings once you leave the under inlet; when you go up into the
upper inspection area, the bell will ring once more. The interval between the two rings is intelligent stop time.
If just let the system identify the inspection signals at the throat, block once the auto sensor at the upper inlet, and then block once
the auto sensor at the under inlet.( the interval is not limited) If only one signal is inspected, escalator will run in one-way mode. If
non-signal is inspected, escalator will run in simple mode. After self-learning, press the stop button to stop the escalator.
Note: During self-learning, keep the escalator in a stable running. If self-learning fails, it still maintain the original paramiters.
18

Unauthorized people are kept away from inspection area. Operate according to instruction.
11. Other Instruction:
(1)Overspeed/Underspeed protecions: When running in normal speed as inspection mode, if non-signals are received, the bell will
ring after each start. If only one signal-inspection gets problem, the escalator can continue running. If both signal-inspections get
problems, it will automatically stop. At the next start, it wont start running and the bell rings once to remind workers of the
malfunction.
(2)Anti-reverse protection: After start, when escalator comes into rated speed: if bell rings once, this function does not come into
effect; if bell dose not ring, this function come into effect. If the bell rings twice and it wont start, it means the last stop is caused by
the protection action.
NOTE:
Escalators will automatically stop after actions of overspeed/underspeed protection or anti-reverse protection. Sytem will keep the the
faults in memory. At the next start, the bell will ring as indication but escalator wont start running. If bell rings once, it means last
stop was caused by step overspeed/underspeed; if bell rings twice, it means last stop was caused by reverse fault. These fault record
will be kept even the power is off. And escalator will not start until the faults are shooted. For methods of faults shoot, please refer to
Item5.
19

(3)Handrail underspeed protection: If one or both handrails are inspected as underspeed, the bell will ring 3 times to indicate. But
escalator can continues running.
(4)Emergency running operation: When escalator stops, if it indicates that it is caused by step underspeed/overspeed protection or
anti-reverse protecion, you can sheathe these functions manually. Method: Press the stop button and roate the start key upward and
keep for 15s until bell rings.
Note: After self-learning, emergency operation will be cancelled automatically and step overspeed/underspeed function and
anti-reverse function restore.
This operation can also sheathe handrail speed meter function.
(5)Cancellation of step overspeed/underspeed function and anti-reverse function: Once these functions come into effect, they will be
maintained. They are only can be cancelled through manual operation. Method: Press the stop button and roate the start key
downward and keep for 15s until bell rings.
Note:If auxiliary brake is fitted, when escalator speed is up to 140% of rated or it slides more than 1.2m, auxiliary brake
will actuate and lock itselt. (even power gets through after cutoff it can not be unlocked) Cancel it according to the method
mentioned before.
Operate according to item4 you can restore step overspeed/underspeed protection, anti-reverse function and handrail
20

underspeed function.
(6)Connection sticky protection: After escalator stops, all contactors shall be released. PLC inspection signal shall be ON, otherwise
system will get into protecion state. Once protection state is self-locked, any operation is useless. Sticky protection can only be
cancelled through cutting off power.
(7)Clasp feedback protection: Clasp feedback switch is fitted on the working brake. When brake looses power, feedback signal is OFF;
when power gets through, feedback signal is ON; when escalator starts, feedback signal is OFF, otherwise it will not start; when
escalator is running, feedback signal is ON, otherwise it will stop automatically and goes into protection state. Once protection state is
self-locked, any operation is useless. Clasp feedback protection can only be cancelled through cutting off power.

21

Chapter4 Maintenance Instruction

I Everyday Maintenance:
Periodically inspect and adjust safety switches;
(2) Periodically dedust and maintain control screen and its interior electric contactors;
(3) Periodically inspect static brush and grounding terminals;
(4) If auto-greaser is installed, PC bases on running time and calculates working time. Auto-greaser fuels once every 24hs. If
required, manual petrol can be undertook through pressing buttons. Users can lubricate according to requirements. (Lubrication time
and period can be set)
II Simple Maintenance Methods:
Unable to start.
Check the power supply first. If the result is normal, please operate as the following: Start the escalator. After release of the start key,
if the bell rings once, the escaltor is self-locked caused by the step-speed-meter fault; if the bell rings twice, the escalator is
self-locked caused by reversal running fault. Undertake the trouble shoot and check relevant cercuits. If it is still unable to start, please
continue to check the following items:
1. Input point 0006 of PLC shall be ON, otherwise check the safety circuit.(refer to List of Fault Codes)
22

2. Input point 0004 of PLC shall be ON as in non-inspection mode, otherwise inspect the circuit.
3. Input point 0005 of PLC shall be ON, otherwise check the circuit and the contactors whether they have restored.
4. Input point 0007 of PLC shall be OFF, otherwise check the clasp feedback circuit.
5. If all the above circuits are normal, send out upward/downward start signal. Input point 0002/0003 shall be ON,
otherwise check the start circuit.
6. If items 1-5 are correct, but the escalator still can not start, please cut off the power and restore. If it starts after restore,
it means it is caused by sticky protection or clasp feedback protection. If not, please check the following item.
7.Cancel the step overspeed/underspeed protection and anti-reverse self-lock protection. If it starts, it means it is caused
by the step overspeed/underspeed protection or the anti-reverse self-lock protection. If not, please contact the supplier.
Note: Prohibit untrained person from undertaking maintenance;
Prohibit non-electricity or inexperienced electrician from undertaking adjustment.
