Why do you have to pay so

much money on something
you dont need to change?
Yes, scientists and
researchers claimed that it
protects the child from any
genetic diseases such as
diabetes, Alzheimers, etc.
However, altering our own
natural genes doesnt
necessarily mean were safe
from any illnesses in the long

As years go by, technologies are starting to

get even more powerful and stronger.
Recently, scientists and researchers have
come up of a technology called the
CRISPR, a device that could alter human
heredity. It could edit an embryo or an
unborn babys DNA to correct disease
genes. Parents now have the option to
modify their unborn child.
They would have the power to choose
which gender they want their child to be,
they can make them tall, intelligent, wellmuscled, and have all the desirable traits
the parents want the baby to have.
Although the power of technology today
could modify an imperfect human being to
be a perfect one, does being perfect still
makes us human beings?

run. There is a possibility that

the new genes would mutate
and create a disease, maybe
even a new disease that
doctors could not heal yet.
Evidently, the risks of
genetically modifying a child
have bigger consequences
than just leaving the child at
its natural state. Even Sheldon
Krimsky, a philosopher at
Tufts University said,

Humans have already

genetically modified crops
and animals but in the
hundreds of thousands of
traits that failed, we simply
discarded the results of the
unwanted crop or animal.
He added, Is this a model
that society wants to apply
to humans? To discard the
result when they dont
work out? There are

PAGE 4

multiple possible harms that might

come later on, so, lets not risk the
life of an innocent child to any
unforeseen genetic problems. We
are human beings, not science
experiments and definitely not lab
rats. Moreover, genetically modifying
human beings might lead to eugenics.
Charles Colson once said, British
medical researchers recently
announced plans to use cutting-edge
science to eliminate a condition my
family is familiar with: autism.
Actually, they are not curing autism
or even making life better for autistic
people. Their plan is to eliminate
autism by eliminating autistic
people. Doesnt that sound familiar
to you? Its similar as to how the
Nazis discriminated the Jews and
tried to create a master race through
unethical procedures. They all
connect together. As we try to
extinguish autistic people or anyone
with disabilities, were enhancing
discrimination against the disabled.
Does living in a society full of tall,
blonde human beings, all with blue
eyes, same personalities, same level
of intelligence and athletic abilities
appeal you? We each have our own
imperfectness and flaws and that is
what makes us distinct. Therefore,
parents should accept us and love us
the way we are. Lets embrace our
own flaws and natural self because

NEFELIBATA

our own traits, personalities,

abilities, skills, and talents
are what make us unique and
acquire this diverse society
that we have now.
Eliminating the
abnormalities and
undesirable traits in our
human race by picking and
choosing what traits we want
for our children only limits
the diversity of our
population. Also, genetically
modifying humans only leads
to discrimination and social
inequalities between the rich
and the poor due to the
existence of not just
material, but as well as,
genetic inequalities.
Designing babies should not
be permitted; it only changes
our human race and might
eventually leads to cloning.
Everyone would choose big
eyes, long eyelashes, pointy
noses, high cheekbones and
long blonde flowing hair [for
their babies. As a result,] our
diversity as a race would
slowly dwindle until we all
looked like Barbie and Ken

WHY DO WE DRINK MILK?

HEALTH
BENEFITS
OF MILK
Milk from cows is in fact known for its
health benefits, making it one of the most
consumed beverages in Europe and US.
Think about it, weve always been told by
our parents that milk is good for us. They
always make us drink milk whether we like
it or not because it is associated with good

NEFELIBATA

health. Therefore, researchers have

been taking a closer look at the
benefits of dairy products, answering
some common questions such as what
kind of dairy children should take, why
kids should drink milk, how much they
should get, and when should they take
them.
To start off, cows milk could not be
digested well by babies under 12
months of age. It also lacks the
essential nutrients that the baby could
get through breastfeeding. So,
researchers recommend introducing
milk to your babies once they turn at
least one year of age. In addition, it is
better to stick to whole milk until the
kid is two years old. This is because a
child needs the fat for nerve and brain
development.
NOMADIC

24

PAGE 6

However, an exception is when your

childs weight kept increasing for
his/her height. In this case, your
pediatrician may recommend to
switch to low-fat milk before the age
of 2. You can also switch to 1 or 2
percent milk if your childs weight is
normal, which helps put your child on
a diet with moderate amounts of fat
and cholesterol. Never switch to skim
since the fat in milk is needed for a
normal nerve and brain development.
It is true that milk from cows contains
multiple health benefits. One of these
is that milk is filled with calcium, a
mineral essential to maintain healthy
bones and teeth. It also has some
nutrients including vitamin D, K, and
C, strontium and magnesium which
are all necessary for bone health.
Moreover, potassium is also found in
cows milk, which is a nutrient that
helps reduce risk of any heart
problems. In one study, those who
consumed 4069 mg of potassium per
day had a 49% lower risk of death
from ischemic heart disease
compared with those who
consumed less potassium (about 1000
mg per day) (Ware, Megan RDN LD). A
dramatic increase in potassium intake,
however, may lead to different health
risks, including cardiovascular
problems. It should also be noted that
cows milk contains saturated fat and
cholesterol which is associated with
various heart diseases.

NEFELIBATA

Regardless, studies shown that cows

milk reduces the risk of having
colorectal cancer since vitamin D
helps in cell growth regulation and
cancer protection. Some studies also
show that calcium and lactose from
dairy products help to prevent ovarian
cancer. Lastly, proteins found in food
and beverages, such as milk, are great
for muscle growth and repair.
According to Today's Dietitian, a
recent analysis of over 20 clinical trials
suggested that an increased milk
intake can boost muscle mass and
strength during resistance exercise in
both younger and older adults (Ware,
Megan RDN LD).
To sum it all up, milks have its perks
but it also has its disadvantages.
Potassium and phosphorus found in
milk can be harmful to those with
kidney failure. Also, ingesting excess
amount of calcium might result to
constipation, kidney stones or kidney
failure; the appropriate intake of
calcium is 2.5 g per day over the age of
1 year old. Cow's milk may also
contain undesirable residues of
hormones and antibiotics, as well as
dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls
(PCBs). These substances can have
negative effects on human health,
including adversely affecting the
nervous system, reproductive system
and immune system, and potentially
raising the risk of certain types of
cancer (Ware, Megan RDN LD).

TECHNOLOGIES NOW
VS.

Cellphone has now

become a substantial
necessity in our lives. We
use it for everything; to
take pictures, listen to
music, to make friends, to
find out what the latest
scoop is with our favourite
celebrities, and many
more. In todays society,
radios are not very
common anymore
because we now use our
phone to play music, also,
telephone and mailing and
writing letters are now a
thing in the past since we
have our phones to
socialize, interact,
and gossip.

Yes, technologies make

lives easier. It makes it
more efficient for us to
communicate with our
friends and colleagues
anytime and anywhere we
want compare to 20 years
ago where communication
is an enormous problem.
However, along with its
benefits also come the
consequences. Technology
has changed our way of
living quite remarkably but
most of us dont realize
this change. Frankly, it has
made our generation lazy,
greedy and ignorant.
In the past, children were

active. They play outside to

make friends. Sometimes,
if they'd like to meet their
friends, they would phone
them first. On a telephone
with a big dial in the
middle, that was plugged
into the wall and clicked in
your ear for every notch of
the dial. If its too cold to
go outside, they stay at
home to read books,
study, or help their
parents with household
chores. Twenty years ago,
people were too busy
being outside, playing,
being active,
and interacting with
friends in the physical

PAGE 11

world. Moreover, they get

enough rest and sleep
since they dont scroll
through their phone all
night like what most of us,
especially teenagers, do
now. As soon as we wake
up, the first thing that our
hands look for is our
phones and before we
sleep, we go through our
Instagram feed, snap our
friends, and watch videos
on YouTube which then
result to us sleeping at 2 in
the morning. This lack of
sleep is often the reason
why people are tired the
next day; it depletes our
energy and makes us lazy.
In fact, study claims that
an average person spends
8 hours and 41 minutes on
electronic devices per day.
Clearly, they spend more
time on technology than
sleeping. A continued lack
of sleep may lead to a
weakened immune system
and an increased risk of
heart disease, high blood
pressure and diabetes
(Davies, Madlen). Research
claims that making your
bedroom technology-free
would undoubtedly give
you a goodnight sleep
at night, making you feel
more energized and less

NEFELIBATA

exhausted on the next

day.
One of the factors that
have increased the
number of suicides
compare to the past is
cyberbullying. Nowadays,
people have the gut to
bully someone with the
use of internet because
they can be anonymous.
They mask their true
identity just to send hate
to a person. This is also
one of the reasons why
there are numerous of
teens who suffer from
anxiety and depression.
For instance, the 15-year
old Canadian girl, Amanda
Todd met a man online
who flattered her so much
to the point of convincing
her to flash her topless
body to him. He
blackmailed her that hell
show the photograph of
her to her friends if she
doesnt give him a show.
During the Christmas 2010
break, the cops informed
her at 4:00 a.m. that the
picture was spreading
online. She started
experiencing anxiety,
depression and
panic disorders due to her
experiences of being

sexually exploited and

cyberbullied, so her family
decided to move to a new
home. However, a year
later, the man reappeared
with a Facebook profile
which has the topless
photo as the profile
picture and contacted her
classmates at her new
school resulting to Todd
being teased
again. Therefore, she
decided to move to
another school for the
second time. Nonetheless,
it was no use, according to
her mother, "Every time
she moved schools he
would go undercover and
become a Facebook friend.
What the guy did was he
went online to the kids
who went to (the new
school) and said that he
was going to be a new
student that he was
starting school the
following week and that he
wanted some friends and
could they friend him on
Facebook. He eventually
gathered people's names
and sent Todd's video to
her new school"
iki/Suicide_of_Amanda_To
dd).

PAGE 12

The bullying, teasing,

stalking never stopped.
Todd began to engage in
self-harm despite taking
her anti-depressant drugs.
She also attempted to
commit suicide multiple
times until on October 10
2012, she succeeded and
was found dead at her
home. Have you ever
heard of a similar story
that happened 20 years
ago? No because in the
90s, bullying happens faceto-face where you could
easily report whos
bullying you since theyre
not hiding their identity.
Clearly, crimes such as
child pornography,
harassment, blackmailing,
hacking, and many more
has been increasing due to
the wrong use of Internet.
Life certainly felt more
carefree 20 years ago with

NEFELIBATA

the lack of Internet and

technology. Life was much
simpler since there wasnt
any online shaming and
bullying. Also, people were
a little healthier, a little
safer, and maybe even a
little happier.
Nevertheless, growing up
with what we have now
offers an extraordinary
wealth of opportunity,
information, and
connections that just
didnt exist extraordinary
wealth of opportunity,
information, and
connections that just
didnt exist in the past.
We can achieve to have a
peaceful society too as
long as we think before we
click. It is important to
be cautious and to keep
your personal information
private when it comes to
the Internet. Parents
should also be aware of

the disadvantages that the

technology could bring to
us and advised their
children about how to stay
safe while using the
Internet. There are many
good effects that the
Internet could give to us
such as being able to
research information for
school or work,
communicating to long
distance friends and you
could also share your
talents to the world by
uploading a video or photo
on your social media. In
conclusion, I believe that
the usage of mobile
phones, internet and
social media shouldnt be
disadvantaged and
frowned upon due to its
benefits. However, it
should be controlled to
lessen the harmful effects
it brings to us.

SELF-BELIEF
DOES NOT
NECESSARILY
ENSURE
SUCCESS, BUT
SELF-DISBELIEF
ASSUREDLY
SPAWNS
FAILURE.

Albert Bandura was

born on the 4th of
December 1925 in
Mundare, Alberta, a
small Canadian town
located approximately
50 miles from
Edmonton. He came
from a big family; hes
the youngest of six
children, two of whom
died in youth, one from
hunting accident and
another from flu
pandemic. Both of
Banduras parents were
immigrants from
Eastern Europe, they
were hard-working and
they cared a lot about
their childrens
.
education. During that
time, Mundare only had
one school with limited
access to education
resources, including
teachers. In fact,
Bandura only had two
teachers during his early
education; thus, most of
the time, students had

to educate themselves.
Regardless, Bandura
saw this as an
advantage, as he was
forced to rely on his
own inquisitiveness and
the world around him to
grasp the concepts that
would serve to further
his knowledge
(http://www.goodtherap
y.org/famouspsychologists/albertbandura.html). r
After high school, he
went to Unviersity of
British Columbia to
major in biological
sciences. One day, he
arrived at school earlier
than the scheduled start
of his course. Therefore,
he decided to take a
filler course in order to
pass time and this is
how he stumbled upon
psychology. Bandura
explained:
"One morning, I was

PAGE 15

wasting time in the

library. Someone had
forgotten to return a
course catalog and I
thumbed through it
attempting to find a
filler course to occupy
the early time slot. I
noticed a course in
psychology that would
serve as excellent filler.
It sparked my interest
and I found my career."

LBERT
BANDURA
A

In 1949, Bandura
graduated in just three
years with a Bolocan
Award in Psychology.
Soon after, he gained an
admission to a graduate
school at University of
Iowa. In 1951, he earned
his MA degree followed
by a PhD in clinical
psychology just a year
after. He worked briefly
at Wichita Kansas
Guidance Center but
resigned in 1953 after
he was offered a
position in Stanford
.
University. Albert
Bandura, 91 years of
age, currently holds the
position of professor
emeritus.
Dr. Bandura has studied
many different topics
over the years, such as,

NEFELIBATA

aggression in children,
childrens abilities to
self-regulate and selfreflect, and selfefficacy. He was best
known for his Bobo Doll
experiment in 1961,
where he made a film of
adults beating up and
shouting at an inflatable
doll. This film was then
showed to a group of
children and a nonviolent behavior was
also shown to another
group. Afterwards, the
children were
accompanied to a play
room with Bobo dolls. It
showed that those who
were exposed to the
violent film were also
aggressive towards the
doll, imitating the
actions of the adult
models while the
controlled group was
rarely violent towards
the doll. In conclusion,
children learn social
behavior such as
aggression through the
process of watching the
behavior of other
people.
He has published
several books about
social cognitive theories,
self-organization and

regulation, and selfefficacy. Moreover, he

has earned countless of
rewards, such as the
Grawemeyer Award in
Psychology in 2008,
Outstanding Lifetime
Contribution to
Psychology Award from
the American
Psychological
Association in 2004, and
many more. Recently,
President Obama
presented eminent
psychological scientist,
Albert Bandura, with the
National Medal of
Science in a ceremony
held at the White House
on May 19, 2016
(http://www.psychologic

fourth most cited
psychologist behind B.F

often identified as
greatest and most

SECRET TIPS TO

SURVIVING LIFE
AS A NEW
PARENT
It is a miraculous thing to have a baby.
Nothing could be more wonderful than
to see your baby finally being born
after 9 months of carrying it to term.
However, pride and joy is often
accompanied by sleep deprivation,
stress, hectic schedules, and work
pressures. As a matter of fact, almost
80% of new mothers suffer from some
sort of mood disturbances, ranging
from baby blues to postpartum
depression. Andrea Yates, for instance,
drowned her five children (6 months
7 years old) in the bathtub. Yates, now
51, is living in Mental Facility watching
videos of her children laughing and
playing.

Its critical to have your own coping

strategies so you dont end up feeling
too overwhelmed, states psychologist
Harriet Lerner, Ph.D. That might be
having a relaxing bath time, having an
uninterrupted phone call with a friend
or reading a book for half an hour.
Here are five tips to make your life less
stressful during your first year of
parenthood:
1. Your baby dont need a lot of new
stuff
Parents tend to buy a lot of cutesy,
expensive baby clothes. However,
chances are, your baby would outgrow
those clothes and would never wear

PAGE 17

half of it. So then youll have to buy

another set of clothes for them to fit
into. Lesson is: buy enough, do not
stock up. Another thing when buying
baby stuffs is to realize what you really
need and resist yourself from buying
all those new and adorable stuffs that
your baby would only use for a short
period of time such as swings and
bouncy seats. Save your money and
borrow from a friend if you can.
2. Baby sleep = Mommy sleep
Sleep is the key to survive your first
year of parenthood. Therefore, while
its still early, try to figure out how you
can get your baby to sleep, stay asleep
and to also take regular naps. Many
newborns have their day and night
mixed up.
3. Let dad find his own way
Usually, men think that really little
babies need mom and they often hold
back until the baby is more interactive.
Fathers need encouragement to
nurture and bond with newborns. Do
not criticize your partner because this
often times result to you carrying the
whole load solo. Respect and support
each other, both of you need that.

NEFELIBATA

4. Treat Yourself
How can you take care of the baby if
you cant even take care of yourself?
Self-care is important. It helps regain
the energy you need to raise and look
after a child. Whether its a leisurely
bath or a solo wander around the
bookstore, doing small things for
yourself will refill your tank.
5. Trust your instincts
Reading books or talking to
experienced parents is great. However,
remember that when it comes to your
own baby, you are the expert. Trust
and listen to your gut because every
child and parent is unique. In fact,
finding out that you can indeed unravel
the mystery of this vulnerable little
creature will bolster your selfconfidence (Haaf, Wendy).
