severe problems in the dovetail area (or fir tree) of turbine disks in large industrial gas turbines. As surfaces wear away, blades or buckets can wobble, leading to overstress, loss of sealing pins, radial rub and, in worst-case scenarios, blade ingestion. The phenomenon is known as blade or bucket rock. Corrosion also results from condensation accumulating when gas turbines are out of service. Corrosion by-products form an abrasive powder between blades and the disk (or wheel), further abrading surfaces when the unit is restarted.
Advantages
Sermatech performs a two-step
coating method to restore and protect the dovetail area/fir tree sections of turbine disks/wheels. The first coat is a thermal-sprayed deposit, applied to the non-pressure dovetail surfaces parallel to the disk circumference. After the surfaces are dimensionally restored, we apply a SermeTel coating to inhibit corrosion. This coating is applied over the fir trees to a thickness of less than .001 inches and has no effect on tolerances.
Restoration Services
Sermatech can perform its turbine
disk restoration service for GE and Siemens-Westinghouse units in the following equipment configurations: On individual disks or stacked rotors in one of our facilities On-site on a stacked rotor that is out of the unit On-site with the rotor in place for GE Frame 5 and 7 and Siemens-Westinghouse 251 and 501 turbines. Our exclusive on-site turbine disk restoration process with the rotor in place requires that only the turbine shell, wrapper, and compressor discharge casing be removed. This approach saves significant time and cost relative to potential disassembly of the disks.
Treated disks are expected to last for
the full period between overhaul of gas turbines operating in either base load or peak load service. Praxair Surface Technologies, Inc. 1500 Polco Street Indianapolis, IN 46222 www.praxairsurfacetechnologies.com psti-info@praxair.com Telephone: +1 317 240 2500 Fax: +1 317 240 2255
