THE HEALTH MESSAGE THROUGH THE SANCTUARY

In this lesson we will be looking at laying the foundation of the health message through the Sanctuary.
This is an exciting journey and one that will leave the reader captivated and charmed by the depth,
wisdom and simplicity that God himself has revealed in hidden spiritual lessons laid out in His temple.

GOD’S PLAN IN THE SANCTUARY: “Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God
as our God?” Psa.77.13.

We only need to take a look at the sanctuary to see that God has established the eight laws of health.

When God took unto Himself a nation, He led them the way of the sanctuary. Just before they were to
leave Egypt they had to offer a lamb, eating the lamb was a symbol of partaking of the sacrifice of
Christ, which everyone had to do in order to leave Egypt (symbolizing this world.)

In the sanctuary the lamb was offered in the courtyard. Then they were to be cleansed by the water
which was demonstrated through the Red Sea, (see 1Cor.10.2) and was symbolized by the laver, and
was the next object in line after the burnt altar. They were guided by the pillar of light at night, and the
cloud by day, Exo.13.21, which is representative of the candlestick in the Holy Place, and they also
were given the manna from heaven Deut.8.3, that was representative of the shewbread situated
opposite that of the candlestick. Finally they were led up to mount Sinai where the tablets of the law
were given to Moses Exo.24.12, which were located in the Most Holy Place.

So you can see the progression of God’s people was through the Sanctuary. Now let us look at how
God led them in the ways of the eight laws of health. In order for God’s people to leave the lifestyle of
Egypt it first required GODLY TRUST, on the part of His people to step out in faith and follow Him
out from their life of bondage. When they left Egypt it was in haste, Deut.16.3, they had to walk, and
walk very fast, God put them on a good exercise program, as walking is the best EXERCISE and
brings all the organs into play. They were to leave the city life behind, with its pollution, and wander
through the wilderness in the pure mountain AIR. God gave them WATER out of a rock, Exo.17.6,
for their thirst, and for their NUTRITION He gave them manna, angels food, with no artificial
preservatives, flavorings and additives. Every man was to gather the manna according to his eating,
Exo.16.18, as not everyone needed the same amount, and they were to exercise TEMPERANCE in
doing so. Walking out in the open, day after day, they would have received plenty of SUNLIGHT to
charge up their nervous system with energy, to give strength to bone and muscle. God also gave them
a day of REST, Exo.16.23, the Sabbath day, which would not only help their spiritual needs, but also
their physical needs as well.

THE FIVE SENSES ILLUSTRATED IN THE SANCTUARY

If you draw a line straight across the exact middle of the sanctuary they will dissect the five pillars of
the sanctuary. These five pillars are at the entrance to the Holy place. You will learn later that the
Tabernacle (Holy & Most Holy Place) is representative of the brain. Satan gained access to man’s
brain through the five senses, and we can use these pillars as a symbolic representation of these five
senses. Read the Anatomy of the senses, THE FIVE WATCHMEN.

So you can see that Satan gained access into the brain (the Tabernacle) through the sense that God had
given to be preserved only for Himself.
In the Holy Place we see representations of the five senses. The candlestick is representative of the
eye, Matt.6.22. The table of shewbread is representative of your mouth, for that is where the bread
was placed, and it had two sets of crowns, and your teeth have two sets of crowns. The golden rings
on the altar are symbolic of the hands Song.5.14, which illustrate the sense of touch, as does the
badgers skin that covers the sanctuary. The altar of incense can represent your nose, for that is where
the sweet odors ascended, giving us the sense of smell, and lastly when the priest entered the Sanctuary
he had bells on the bottom of his garment Exo.28.33, which of course would make a noise as he
ministered in the Tabernacle, notifying the people outside that he was not consumed by the glory of the
presence of God, and that gives us the last sense represented, which is the sense of hearing.

We can see therefore that when the Bible says that we are the temple of God; 1Cor.6.19, that it has
more depth than we comprehended.

THE CLEANSING OF THE SANCTUARY

The sanctuary services were a never ending round of purification from uncleanliness, both spiritually
and physically. This is God’s Plan for all His children, “I will also save you from all your
uncleannesses:” Eze.36.29. The same thing takes place in the human organism moment by moment,
as all the organs of the body are trying to purify the body from all its filth and make us clean. “That
the house of Israel may go no more astray from me, neither be polluted any more with all their
transgressions; but that they may be my people, and I may be their God, saith the Lord GOD.”
Eze.14.11. “And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living
God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall
be my people.” 2Cor.6.16

When God’s people defiled themselves with the corruption of the world they set up idols in God’s
temple, and worshipped a false image, a false God. So likewise, when we defile our bodies, we change
the image of the true God into the similitude of our perverse imagination! We can’t think clearly and
this will have a corresponding influence upon our understanding and comprehension of the truth. “It is
a sacred duty which God has enjoined upon reasonable beings, formed in his image, to keep that image
in as perfect a state as possible. Those who bring disease upon themselves, by self-gratification, have
not healthy bodies and minds. They cannot weigh the evidences of truth, and comprehend the
requirements of God.” 4SGA.148.

“God requires all men to render their bodies to Him a living sacrifice, not a dead or a dying sacrifice, a
sacrifice which their own course of action is debilitating, filling with impurities and disease. God calls
for a living sacrifice. The body, He tells us, is the temple of the Holy Ghost, the habitation of His
Spirit, and He requires all who bear His image to take care of their bodies for the purpose of His
service and His glory.” 2T.070.

“And said unto them, Hear me, ye Levites, sanctify now yourselves, and sanctify the house of the
LORD God of your fathers, and carry forth the filthiness out of the holy place.” 2Chr.29.5. “Having
therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and
spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” 2Cor.7.1.

In cases of apostasy the temple was polluted, and in times of reformation the temple was cleansed:
“And they gathered their brethren, and sanctified themselves, and came, according to the
commandment of the king, by the words of the LORD, to cleanse the house of the LORD. And the
priests went into the inner part of the house of the LORD, to cleanse it, and brought out all the
uncleanness that they found in the temple of the LORD into the court of the house of the LORD. And
the Levites took it, to carry it out abroad into the brook Kidron.” 2Chr.29.15,16.

This gives us an important lesson, that both cleanliness in the spirit and the flesh are necessary for true
reformation, they cannot and shouldn’t be separated. Anything that the Lord shows us will pollute His
temple (your body,) needs to be given up, lest we put it in the place of God, and worship an idol of our
own inventing.

CLEANLINESS NEXT TO GODLINESS: One cannot read the Bible without realizing that God is
particular in the area of cleanliness. In fact His whole ministry for man is centered on its principles.
Laws of hygiene were very strict and some even on the observance of death if they were not followed.

“Thus shall ye separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness; that they die not in their
uncleanness, when they defile my tabernacle that is among them.” Lev.15.31. Just as those who
defiled the literal temple died, so too, those who defile the physical temple will die. “If any man defile
the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.”
1Cor.3.17.

“But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from among
the congregation, because he hath defiled the sanctuary of the LORD: the water of separation hath not
been sprinkled upon him; he is unclean.” Num.19.20

All unclean persons dwelt without the camp, and had to be pronounced clean by the priest to enter
back into the congregation of Israel. The sanctuary was Holy ground and uncleanness was not
tolerated by God, and nor should it be tolerated by His people, “For God hath not called us unto
uncleanness, but unto holiness.” 1Thes.4.7.

If God’s presence could not dwell in the temple because of the children of Israel’s uncleanness, then
He cannot also dwell in us while we are knowingly defiling it, and breaking the laws of our physical
being. We need to do our part in allowing God to cleanse us in the Spirit and in the flesh, and this
takes persistent effort and self denial.

DRESS & CLEANLINESS: When a person beheld the sanctuary there was nothing on the outside
that attracted his attention, for all the beauty lay within the sanctuary, and so too is it for Christians.
Their attention to inward adornment is more important than outward appearance, though neatness in
appearance and modesty of apparel do have their place in representing Christ.

The priests above all people were to have clean garments, and no impurities or offensive odors were to
come from them; “They shall have linen bonnets upon their heads, and shall have linen breeches upon
their loins; they shall not gird themselves with any thing that causeth sweat.” Eze.44.18. This is also
symbolic of our characters also, God doesn’t want our character in any way to be offensive to another
person.

Before the presence of the Lord appeared to the children of Israel from mount Sinai, the Lord
instructed them to wash their clothes, Exo.19.10. This was such an important act that the result of
violating it would result in death.
If a person in any way touched something unclean, such as a dead body, an unclean animal, a grave, an
issue, etc, he / she was to wash their garments. Symbolizing that when our characters come in contact
with anything that defiles them they need to be washed again by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ.

“Our dress should be cleanly. Uncleanness in dress is unhealthful, and thus defiling to the body and to
the soul. "Ye are the temple of God. . . . If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy." I
Corinthians 3:16:17.

“In all respects the dress should be healthful. "Above all things," God desires us to "be in health" (3
John 2)-- health of body and of soul. And we are to be workers together with Him for the health of
both soul and body. Both are promoted by healthful dress. It should have the grace, the beauty, the
appropriateness, of natural simplicity.” CT.303.

A LIVING SACRIFICE: In the sanctuary services, only an animal without blemish could be
considered a perfect offering, acceptable to God, Lev.1.3, it was considered highly offensive to God to
have that which was not in the best condition. “And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil?
and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with
thee, or accept thy person? saith the LORD of hosts.” Mal.1.8. Of course these offerings represented
Christ, however they have a secondary application for you and I. “I beseech you therefore, brethren,
by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which
is your reasonable service.” Rom.12.1.

“In the time of ancient Israel the priests critically examined every offering that was brought as a
sacrifice. If any defect was discovered, the animal was refused; for the Lord had commanded that the
offering should be "without blemish." We are to present our bodies a living sacrifice to God, and
should we not seek to make the offering as perfect as possible? God has given us every instruction
necessary for our physical, mental, and moral well-being; and it is the duty of every one of us to bring
our habits of life into conformity with the divine standard in every particular. Will the Lord be pleased
with anything less than the best we can offer?” 5T.541.

COUNT THE COST: There were no cheap materials used in building the Sanctuary, its value was
priceless, and so also does God consider each son and daughter of God. “I will make a man more
precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.” Isa.13.12.

“For the building of the sanctuary great and expensive preparations were necessary; a large amount of
the most precious and costly material was required; yet the Lord accepted only freewill offerings. "Of
every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take My offering" was the divine command
repeated by Moses to the congregation. Devotion to God and a spirit of sacrifice were the first
requisites in preparing a dwelling place for the Most High.” PP.343. This is the same with the temple
of our bodies, devotion and sacrifice are needed to prepare a dwelling place for the Most High, nothing
less will suffice.

No expense was spared in building the sanctuary, and so too has the Lord spared no expense in
erecting the tabernacle of the physical temple. We need to count the cost of what God has invested in
erecting our body temples, and say as did David, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully
made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” Psa.139.14.
Much of the materials that furnish this marvelous workmanship of the human body come from what
we place in our mouths. Only that which God specified to bring were they to use, and in the selection
of human materials God is not any less particular.

“Then wrought Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every wise hearted man, in whom the LORD put wisdom
and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, according
to all that the LORD had commanded.” Exo.36.1. It took wisdom and understanding to know how to
work all the manner of the work for the sanctuary’s service, and so too does it take the same wisdom in
making a perfect sanctuary of the body as a fit dwelling place for the presence of God to dwell.

God is very particular about what furnishings He wanted in the Sanctuary, and the material that they
were to be made of, likewise He is very particular about what we furnish our bodies with, by what we
take in through our mouth. Why is God so particular about what we eat? It is because it all has a
direct bearing upon the blood.

THE FOUNDATION OF THE SANCTUARY: In the building of a temple for the Lord, the first
thing that needs to be laid is the foundation, and this is the reason that you are learning the foundation
of God’s Plan first. It doesn’t matter how much information you know about health, if you have the
wrong foundation to start with, you will just become more effective in propagating error.

Although the Bible doesn’t say that the sanctuary was built on a rock, it does give many clues to come
to this conclusion. Jesus Himself said that a wise man builds his house upon a rock, Matt.7.24, while
he called the other man a fool who established it upon sand, Matt.7:26. We wouldn’t think for one
moment that Jesus would say that His Father was foolish in how He built His house. Also when Moses
saw Jesus in His glory, He walked upon stone, Exo.24.10. Solomon’s temple was founded upon
hewed stone, 1King.5.17, which was in many respects similar, an exact replica to the previous
sanctuary.

The Bible says: “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
1Cor.3.11. “Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders
rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our
eyes?” Matt.21.42.

Jesus is never represented as sand, for sand can be moved, it can be blown away with the wind, and it
offers no stability to a building, and so it can’t offer a stable foundation to the sanctuary. Many
attempts however have been made by men to place the sanctuary on the wrong foundation, theological
reasoning and speculations have crept into the church and what has been propagated as sound Biblical
doctrine has been nothing more than sinking sand, and like the fool that built his house on the sand, his
house will not stand in the great time of crisis.

Much of the health education also has been built on the wrong foundation, because it has not been
based on the Bible and the testimony of Jesus. When studying health we need to be diligent Bible
students, lest we accept the wrong philosophy and erect a faulty tabernacle. It cannot be stressed
enough the importance of the correct foundation, if you don’t know it and practice it you will most
surely fall!

“But every building erected on other foundation than God's word will fall. He who, like the Jews in
Christ's day, builds on the foundation of human ideas and opinions, of forms and ceremonies of man's
invention, or on any works that he can do independently of the grace of Christ, is erecting his structure
of character upon the shifting sand. The fierce tempests of temptation will sweep away the sandy
foundation and leave his house a wreck on the shores of time.” MB.150.

“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Psa.11.3. Just ask a builder “What
happens if the foundation of a building is laid incorrectly?” All will agree that it will affect every other
part of the building, nothing will square up, and many errors will creep into the work. So too is it in
laying the correct foundation of understanding how are body works, the results will manifest
themselves in disease.

Let us make sure that firstly we have the correct foundational beliefs that are rooted and grounded in
Christ and then “...Leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not
laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God. Heb.6.1.

Not only does the Bible admonish us in regards to what foundation we must lay, but how to build on
that foundation is just as vital: “According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise
masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed
how he buildeth thereupon.” 1Cor.3.10.

Why is it important to take heed to how we build upon that foundation? “Now if any man build upon
this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made
manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try
every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he
shall receive a reward.” 1Cor.3.12-14.

Wood, hay and stubble are cheap materials, we want to put in our body temple only the best materials
that will bring nourishment to our blood and build up once again that which may have been in a state
of decay. It is important to note that the scripture says that whatever we build upon the foundation
shall be made manifest by our works, for the day shall declare it. In other words, the foundation
determines the works, which fixes our habits and forms our behavior determining our destiny.

Jesus said that He would go to the Father and prepare us a dwelling place in heaven, John.14.2,
however He expects us to prepare for Him a dwelling place on earth. No one who abuses willfully His
dwelling place on earth will partake of His dwelling place in Heaven, for they would just as soon ruin
that also.

In the Bible many times the temple was broken down, neglected and abused, but when repentance was
brought forth by the power of God’s grace the temple was once again restored and the glory of God
dwelt once again in the temple. This is good news for those who have had their body temple broken
down with disease, and wonder if God will accept them just as they are. Praise God the Lord hasn’t
rewarded us according to how we have rewarded our bodies, but He has given us a time of probation to
mend once again a fitting temple for Him to dwell in.

NEAR NOT FAR: “That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him,
though he be not far from every one of us:” Acts.17.27. One of the primary lessons of the sanctuary
was to teach us that God is not as far away as we may think, but within the reach of all, and within the
hearts of all His followers. If the Jews had recognized that the temple represented their body then
when Jesus said; “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” John.2.19, they would have
understood its meaning, and could not have misconstrued His words.
After His crucifixion Jesus made Himself known to two disciples: “And it came to pass, that, while
they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.” But their eyes
were holden that they should not know him.” Luke.24.15,16. This is the story of God’s life with His
people, He draws near to them and they don’t even know it! Why didn’t they know it? Because they
were slow to believe all that the prophets had spoken,” Luke.24.25. Jesus had to give them a Bible
study in order for them to understand, and once they understood the scriptures they could see Jesus.
“And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.” Luke.24.31.

Where did He vanish to? Now He drew close to them before in their unbelief, is He now going to be
far away from them in their belief? No, He went from being with them to being in them! “And they
said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he
opened to us the scriptures?” Luke.24.32. “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put
within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of
flesh.” Eze.36.26. “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Col.1.27 You can’t get any closer relationship
than that.

It is also true with our body tabernacles, Jesus wants to dwell in our physical structure to give us
spiritual life and physical health. As long as we do not hinder Christ’s work in restoring the image of
God in us He will actually make His life present in us, and bring the whole body in captivity to His
will. His life is in the blood.

IT’S ALL IN THE BLOOD: What produced the disease of the animal was due to the condition of
the blood, and so it is for us also. When God said the “Life of the flesh is in the blood,” Lev.17.11. it
goes deeper than we realize, the original word of ‘Life’ was reference to character, in other words, the
condition of the blood determines the condition of our character, as well as physical condition. When
someone is sick and goes to the doctor for a checkup, if the doctor is unsure of their physical condition
he will often run a test on the blood, to find out the nature of the ailment. God is the great physician
that is examining our blood (our characters) to reveal to us our spiritual ailments that we may go to
Him for our needed medicine.

What defiles the blood defiles the sanctuary, therefore we need to keep the blood in the cleanest
possible condition for us to truly understand the character of God and the requirements that we are to
follow. The eight laws of health are designed by God to bring about a pure condition of the
bloodstream, which will lead to a higher spiritual cleansing of the character.

The priest Eli had two sons ministering in the priesthood Hophni and Phinehas, but they were the sons
of Belial, 1Sam.2.12. They had an appetite for the blood of animals; “Also before they burnt the fat,
the priest's servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he
will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw.” 1Sam.2.15. What was the result of them taking the blood
of dead animals into their living temples? “Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto
all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the
congregation.” 1Sam.2.22. The life of the beast became the life of the priest, for the blood carried
with it the character of the animal. This is also true for those who partake of the blood of Christ, “He
that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.” John.6.56. This is
revealed in Christ’s church in the end of time; “...These are they which came out of great tribulation,
and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” Rev.7.14.
Therefore we need to pay careful consideration to what is going to constitute our blood, and the eight
laws of health have a direct relationship in keeping the blood pure and thus enabling the character to be
kept pure.

SPIRITUAL LESSONS OF FAT: In the sacrificial services of the sanctuary the fat was always
burnt on the altar, “And thou shalt take all the fat that covereth the inwards, and the caul that is above
the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, and burn them upon the altar.” Exo.29.13.
Fat is a symbol of sin, “From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me
about. They are enclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly.” Psa.17.9,10. Fat is
used in a symbolic sense here and would make perfect sense, if read “They are enclosed in their own
sin.” Much of the poison that comes in our body is stored in the fat cells, and is released when the
body undergoes a thorough cleansing.

God wanted to show us in this lesson of burning the fat that He will perform the role of consuming sin
out of our lives. The fire was never to go out, Lev.6.13, and was ignited by the Lord Himself, “And
there came a fire out from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the
fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces.” Lev.9.24. This shows us that
it is God’s work to consume sin, and He will do it as long as we place ourselves on the altar of service.

“It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat
nor blood.” Lev.3.17. Just as animal fat clogs up the human machinery and brings disease and death,
so does partaking of sin.

Fat has the most calories of the body, and is the body’s energy supply, along with carbohydrates. The
burning of the fat on the altar also shows us that we need to consume our energy for God’s service, this
lesson should not be overlooked. Our fat is being burnt up in our body every day as energy, we can
use this energy for ourselves or for God in the service for man. In the Bible all the fat was to be burnt
upon the altar, Lev.4.19. This shows us that we need to consume all our energy for God, even if we
are working in a humble occupation, all our efforts are directed to saving souls and not serving
ourselves. “And the priest shall burn them upon the altar: it is the food of the offering made by fire for
a sweet savour: all the fat is the LORD'S.” Lev.3.16. The consumption of our energy for God, will
bring about the desired result of consuming our sin, and this is a sweet savour to our Lord, and we
become an acceptable offering to Him, for nothing is withheld.

THE EIGHT LAWS IN THE SANCTUARY


Each of the eight laws of health can be found upon a thorough examination of the sanctuary. The laws
may be wrapped up in symbolism but nevertheless everything in the sanctuary had a symbolic message
concealed for the earnest seeker to discover.

GODLY TRUST: The first law Godly Trust is probably the most obvious one that can be found in
the sanctuary. One wishing to be cleansed of his sin could not even take the first step towards the
tabernacle without trust in divine power to cleanse his soul from sin. The sinner was required to bring
a lamb, signifying his trust in the lamb of God that would take away the sins of the world, John 1.29.

He not only had to trust that his sins were forgiven but that God would cleanse him from sin, which
was a significant lesson of the laver. He had to trust that the priest would make atonement for his sins
by the blood of the lamb, which only had any merit as it signified Christ.
Once forgiven and reconciled back to God, he then had to trust that God would keep him from falling
and uphold him in righteousness.

OPEN AIR: The concept of fresh air can be found in several ways in the sanctuary. Firstly literally
the sanctuary was in open air and had free circulation around it. Also the priests garments were to be
made of linen so that the air would permeate through their clothes and not cause sweat, due to
dampness from inadequate circulation. The sacrifices themselves could not be consumed without air,
as fire needs oxygen to consume it, as also did the candlestick and the altar of incense.

Air is likened to the Holy Spirit, John.3.8, and is seen in the sanctuary as being represented as oil
which was located inside the tabernacle, which we will learn corresponds to the human brain. As
oxygen filled the tabernacle so also is it to fill our brains, and has the richest supply of any organ of
the body.

DAILY EXERCISE: The soul that sinned needed to exercise his body just to get to the sanctuary
door, and it was the best form of exercise, that of walking. Not only did he have to exercise his
muscles but also his faith in a crucified Saviour.

SUNSHINE: In the physical setting of course, the tabernacle was under direct exposure to sunlight,
but not only that, it had light in it as well. The candlestick gave light to the Holy Place, and the
Shikinah glory of God’s presence surpassed that even of the sun. The altar and candlestick were to
keep constantly burning, and every moment of the day and night light illuminated the sanctuary. In
the courtyard, Holy Place and Most Holy Place light permeated, thus showing the importance of light
upon and in our body temples.

PROPER REST: Just before and just after the sanctuary was built God gave His people an important
commandment about rest, the Seventh Day Sabbath of rest. Exo.20.8 – 11. Exo.31.14 – 17.

The Sabbath is not given just for a physical rest, anyone who believes such a concept will not be
keeping the Sabbath anymore than someone who is working that day. Man was created on the sixth
day, and rested on the seventh day. Did he need physical rest? No, he was to enjoy perfect
communion with his Creator, and be spiritually refreshed.

All throughout the journey across the wilderness God gave His people repose, they were to enjoy
seasons of refreshment, that would give them spiritual and physical strength to resist temptation.

Even the building of the sanctuary was not to be done on the sacred hours of the Sabbath; “During his
stay in the mount, Moses received directions for the building of a sanctuary in which the divine
presence would be specially manifested. "Let them make Me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among
them" (Exodus 25:8), was the command of God. For the third time the observance of the Sabbath was
enjoined. "It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever," the Lord declared, "that ye may
know that I am Jehovah that doth sanctify you. Ye shall keep the Sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto
you. . . . Whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people." Exodus
31: 13,14. Directions had just been given for the immediate erection of the tabernacle for the service of
God; and now the people might conclude, because the object in view was the glory of God, and also
because of their great need of a place of worship, that they would be justified in working at the
building upon the Sabbath. To guard them from this error, the warning was given. Even the sacredness
and urgency of that special work for God must not lead them to infringe upon His holy rest day.”

Though the sanctuary was not to be built on the Sabbath, the work in the sanctuary by the priests was
to continue. Though the physical work upon our tabernacles is to be prohibited on the Sabbath, the
work of helping others by ministering to their needs is not just acceptable, but admonished, read Isaiah
58.

LOTS OF WATER: In the sanctuary we can easily find the water, just look in the laver, there the
priest was to wash his hands and his feet lest he defile the sanctuary. Water by nature and by symbol
is identified with cleansing, which is the work of God in the sanctuary, to cleanse us from all sin.
Physical and spiritual defilement was an offense to God, and in the book of Leviticus you will find
many examples of water being used in the restoration of disease, such as in the case of Leprosy, issues,
or defilement.

ALWAYS TEMPERATE: In the sanctuary we can learn the rules of temperance in many different
ways. Temperance is not just what we eat and drink it covers every area of our lives, it is a regulation
of spiritual, mental and physical equilibrium of that which is good, and total abstinence of that which is
forbidden.

Gluttony in the Bible was considered a grievous sin, and was punishable by death: “If a man have a
stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and
that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: Then shall his father and his mother
lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; And they
shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice;
he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so
shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.” Deut.21.18-21.

We see also when Nadab and Abihu became intemperate in drinking that they were struck by death:
“And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put
incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not. And there
went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.” Lev.10.1,2.

Temperance in dress was also demonstrated in the priests garments, the garments were beautiful, yet
modest, and represented the inward adornment of grace that those who ministered must have to be
partakers of the altar.

Intemperance in sexual activity was not tolerated by God; “Now Eli was very old, and heard all that
his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the
tabernacle of the congregation. And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil
dealings by all this people. Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the Lord’s
people to transgress. If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against
the LORD, who shall entreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their
father, because the LORD would slay them.” 1Sam.2.22-25.

NUTRITION
THE COURTYARD & RELATIONSHIP TO DIET: If we take a look in the sanctuary we will
discover that the courtyard is the only place that meat is cooked and eaten. The courtyard typified the
Jewish era, for all the offerings that were sacrificed were a shadow of the true type which was a
symbol of Jesus, (refer to the Bible study guides on the offerings.) The altar upon which the sacrifice
was placed was a symbol of the cross, for that was where the blood was poured out, and atonement of
sin was made, Exo.29.12, Lev.4.35.

The flesh that the priests ate was a symbol of the Word of God, (Jesus Christ) John.1.14, but when the
Word came as a man it was no longer necessary to continue with the shadow which pointed towards
the living reality. At this point the ceremonial services that foretold of Christ were to be done away
with, “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and
took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;” Col.2.14.

HOLY PLACE: When Jesus became a priest in the heavenly sanctuary, Heb.4.14, Heb.9.24, and
entered into the Holy Place to become intercessor for mankind, Rom.8.34. In the Holy Place there is
no flesh food, only grains (symbolized by the bread) and the fruits, vegetables, and nuts were
symbolized by the candlestick, for on the candlestick were flowers, which can represent fruits and
vegetables, on the top of the candlestick were almond shaped bowls, which represent the nut family
(almond being the king of the nuts). The olive oil (which is a fruit) was also in the bread, and the
pomegranates were on the hem of the priests garment, Exo.28.34.

Up until the cross every Jew was required by law to partake of the flesh (for it symbolized the
Messiah) but when He came there was no longer any need to eat flesh food, for there is no flesh food
in the Holy place where our Lord has gone.

MOST HOLY PLACE: This is the diet of heaven that those who will be translated will be partaking
of. In this place we see the angel’s food, manna, the rod of Aaron, which budded almonds, nut family,
and we see the pomegranate, the fruit family.

Vision of the food in the Most Holy Place by Mrs. White: “At the commencement of the Holy
Sabbath, (Jan. 5,) we engaged in prayer with Bro. Belden's family at Rocky Hill, Ct., and the Holy
Ghost fell upon us. I was taken off in Vision to the Most Holy Place, where I saw Jesus still
interceding for Israel. On the bottom of his garment was a bell and a pomegranate, a bell and a
pomegranate.” RH.1849-08-01.014

“In the ark, beneath where the angels' wings were spread, was a golden pot of Manna, of a yellowish
cast; and I saw a rod, which Jesus said was Aaron's; I saw it bud, blossom and bear fruit. And I saw
two long golden rods, on which hung silver wires, and on the wires most glorious grapes; one cluster
was more than a man here could carry. And I saw Jesus step up and take of the manna, almonds,
grapes and pomegranates, and bear them down to the city, and place them on the supper table.”
WLF.016.

Vegetables find no place in heaven for they came as a result of sin, and were originally for the beast
of the field, however in heaven man will not have to stoop down to the ground for food, it will be right
at his fingertips.

THE EIGHT LAWS PERSONIFIED


When Jesus came clothed in the fashion of a man, he came not only to fulfil the laws of God as
expressed in the ten commandments but also the physical laws of health as revealed in GOD’S PLAN.
Jesus was a composition of the laws themselves, a living, walking example of their principles, and
from whom these principles came forth.
Jesus is Godly trust; “He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this
cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.” Matt.26.42
Jesus is the breath of life; “...I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more
abundantly.” John.10.10. And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed
into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Gen.2.7
Jesus is our physical strength; “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Phil.4.13
Jesus is light; Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth
me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John.8.12.
Jesus was rest; “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matt.11.28.
Jesus is the water; “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the
water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” John.4.14
Jesus is temperate; “Which of you convinceth me of sin”? John.8.46
Jesus is the food of man; And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall
never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. John.6.35.

Though Jesus was the embodiment of these laws, by placing Himself into the hands of sinners caused
the blessings of these laws to depart from Him. He not only had to suffer for the breaking of the moral
law, but also for the violation of the physical laws that caused disease and death. “That it might be
fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our
sicknesses.” Matt.8.17.

When Jesus was on the cross Satan tried to deprive the Saviour of the eight laws of health. He
succeeded in seven of them but one thing he could not shake, and that was His trust in His Father’s
love.

Trust tested, but not abandoned; “Even doubts assailed the dying Son of God. He could not see through
the portals of the tomb. Bright hope did not present to Him His coming forth from the tomb a
conqueror and His Father's acceptance of His sacrifice. The sin of the world, with all its terribleness,
was felt to the utmost by the Son of God. The displeasure of the Father for sin, and its penalty, which is
death, were all that He could realize through this amazing darkness. He was tempted to fear that sin
was so offensive in the sight of His Father that He could not be reconciled to His Son. The fierce
temptation that His own Father had forever left Him caused that piercing cry from the cross: "My God,
My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" 2T.209,210.

“Faith and hope trembled in the expiring agonies of Christ because God had removed the assurance He
had heretofore given His beloved Son of His approbation and acceptance. The Redeemer of the world
then relied upon the evidences which had hitherto strengthened Him, that His Father accepted His
labors and was pleased with His work. In His dying agony, as He yields up His precious life, He has by
faith alone to trust in Him whom it has ever been His joy to obey. He is not cheered with clear, bright
rays of hope on the right hand nor on the left. All is enshrouded in oppressive gloom. Amid the awful
darkness which is felt by sympathizing nature, the Redeemer drains the mysterious cup even to its
dregs. Denied even bright hope and confidence in the triumph which will be His in the future, He cries
with a loud voice: "Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit." He is acquainted with the character
of His Father, with His justice, His mercy, and His great love, and in submission He drops into His
hands. Amid the convulsions of nature are heard by the amazed spectators the dying words of the Man
of Calvary.” 2T.210,211.
Jesus was deprived of air; Hanging on the cross, caused breathing to be laborious as one had to pull on
the hands and extend the legs to expand the diaphragm. “His labored breath grew quick and deep, as
His soul panted under the burden of the sins of the world.” DA.760.

Jesus was given the most strenuous exercise, that of carrying His cross, up a hill with a lacerated back,
“The Son of God was delivered to the people to be crucified; with shouts of triumph they led the dear
Saviour away. He was weak and faint from weariness, pain, and loss of blood by the scourging and
blows which He had received; yet the heavy cross upon which He was soon to be nailed was laid upon
Him. Jesus fainted beneath the burden. Three times the cross was placed upon His shoulders, and three
times He fainted.” EW.175.

Jesus was deprived of sunlight, for the sun hid its face from Him, “And it was about the sixth hour, and
there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of
the temple was rent in the midst.” Luke.23.44,45.

Jesus was deprived of sleep: Jesus last night was filled with intense activity, as He was taken from
Gethsemane to court, and given no rest all night. “He knew that no sleep would refresh his weary
frame until he closed his eyes in death.” ST.1878-01-17.

Jesus was deprived of water; “After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that
the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.” John.19.28.

Jesus was tempted to be intemperate; “And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he
received it not.” Mark.15.23. As previously mentioned they gave Him also vinegar and gall, which
has one translation in the Strong’s concordance as opium, a drug. He spat out the drugs and alcohol to
give all those drug addicts and alcoholics a victory over their vice like addictions. “Praise God for
that”!!!

Jesus was deprived of food; “They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me
vinegar to drink.” Psa.69.21. Of course Jesus refused to swallow this type of food and spat it out.

JESUS BORE OUR SICKNESSES: The sanctuary services not only made atonement for ones
spiritual infirmities but also ones physical infirmities, (examples can be found in Lev. 13-15). Just as
the sanctuary received the physical defilement of the sinners uncleanness so also did Christ. “Surely
he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and
afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the
chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” Isa.53.4,5.

Jesus was the Great Physician that couldn’t be healed, but only for our sake, it wasn’t the nails that
kept Him hanging on the cross it was His love for you and me.

When Jesus was on the cross He suffered our physical diseases, though He never violated His Father’s
laws, even the laws of health, He suffered our curses, and paid for them in the fullest measure. When
He was on the cross He suffered numerous diseases, here are just a few:

Skeletal disease: “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint...” Psa.22.14.
Weakness and dehydration: “My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my
jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.” Psa.22.15.
Circulatory disease: The stress of our sins, and the dehydration of His blood would have caused
Jesus an increase in blood pressure due to a thickening of the blood, a more rapid heart rate. “My heart
is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.” Psa.22.14
Integumentary disease: “For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed
me: they pierced my hands and my feet.” Psa.22.16. “Then released he Barabbas unto them: and
when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.” Matt.27.26. Breaking the skin open
would have led to infection, also he would have had bad inflammation.
Nervous disorders: Jesus had excruciating pain as a result of His submission to the cross, pain only
comes through the medium of the nerves. From the top of His head to the soul of His foot His pain
receptors would have been throbbing with intensity such as we have not ever experienced.
Immune Disease: His whole immune system as strong as it was would have been weakened due to
the influence of the suffering of our sins and the separation of the Father’s presence from Him. Having
no sleep, tired and in pain, dehydrated and severely beaten would have had a tremendous influence
upon His immune system, crippling His white T cells, and causing pathogens to contaminate His body.
Kidney problems: Having no water gives the strongest of kidneys a beating, places undue stress also
upon the heart.

These are just to name a few, it is for you to further investigate them yourselves. I hope that this study
has given you a greater love for your Creator, knowing a little more of His great sacrifice in the
baptism of His sufferings, by also taking upon Himself our physical infirmities. Now use this material
to tell others that they too have someone who can understand all the sufferings that they are going
through, even their physical ailments. Now you can tell people that he carried their sickness, and that
He felt all their pain. Tell them friends, that Jesus cares, what more could He have done to show it!
