English Influence on Hong Kong Written Chinese:

The case of homographs
SHI Ding-xu, CHU Chi-yu
(Department of Chinese & Bilingual Studies, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, China)
Abstract: Some words in Hong Kong written Chinese are morphologically identical to those in Standard Chinese
but are semantically different from their counterparts. These homographs come from various sources. Some of
them are the result of accidental mismatch in the sense that different English words are translated as the same
Chinese word. Some others came into being when their semantic field or syntactic behavior was altered due to
English influence.
Key words: Hong Kong written Chinese; standard Chinese; homographs; loan-words
