Objectives of Course:
Introduction to Engineering Design curriculum will follow the guidelines of Project
Lead the Way, Inc., a National Alliance for Pre-Engineering Program. The course is a
foundation course that will teach students to use a problem-solving model to
improve existing products and invent new ones. Using Autodesk Inventora
sophisticated 3-D parametric modeling softwarestudents communicate the details
of the products. Emphasis is placed on analyzing potential solutions and
communicating ideas through various vehicles of communication. Understanding
the terminology for the drafting/engineering industry and expanding fundamental
skills in hand sketching (basic drafting) are both integral to this introductory course.
Working in teams, you will learn about documenting your solutions, solving
problems, and communicating your solutions to other students and members of the
professional community of engineering and engineering design.
Introduction to Engineering Design TM is intended to serve as a foundation course
within the Project Lead The Way course sequence. All of the topics learned in this
course will be used in future courses. Successful completion of this course leads
sequentially next year to Principles of Engineering!
Introduction to Engineering DesignTM (IED) is a high school level course that is
appropriate for students who are interested in design and engineering. The major
focus of the IED course is to expose students to the design process, research and
analysis, teamwork, communication methods, global and human impacts,
engineering standards, and technical documentation. IED gives students the
opportunity to develop skills and understanding of course concepts through
activity-, project-, and problem-based (APPB) learning.
Students will develop problem-solving skills and apply their knowledge of research
and design to create solutions to various challenges that increase in difficulty
throughout the course. Students will also learn how to document their work, and
communicate their solutions to their peers and members of the professional
community through their engineers notebook and portfolio.

Student Expectations:
Students must remember that the computer they use is not their personal
computer.
Students must agree to the district computer usage policy and must
understand that those rules will be strictly enforced.
Assessment
The evaluation of projects will be on going and cumulative with the use of
performance, portfolio, test, and self-report assessments. These assessments are
check marks of how the students are meeting the standards set in the course
and help direct the accomplishment of the project itself.

Students will be graded in two areas. These two areas will then make up their
final grade. One area will be based on Standards Mastery (exams/projects)
which is 65% of their grade. To meet Standards Mastery your student must be
in class and completing the required projects and exams. The second area
they will be graded in is their Performance Indicators which is 35% of their
grades. This category will include participation in class, so it is vital that they
are in school and do not miss on a regular basis.
Late Work: All work must be turned in to me by the week before the last
day of the quarter. I will not deduct points for being late, HOWEVER, if you
do not have an assignment at the due date, your grade will reflect an M in
SIS. THIS WILL LOWER YOUR GRADE.
Attendance Policy:
Academic Honesty:
Academic honesty is expected in this class. Cheating will not be tolerated. Consequences may
include: reduction in grade on assignment, repeat assignment, no grade on assignment or others
as deemed appropriate. Academic dishonesty will be reported to a school counselor and a parent
will be notified.
I have read and understand the rules for Mr. Ortiz IED class.
