Rock

Rock Magazines: Classic Rock,

Kerrang, Rock Sound and The
History of Rock.
Artists/bands: AC/DC, Aerosmith,
Black Sabbath and Slash.
Classic Features: Red, white and
black colour scheme, lots of text,
busy cover.
Audience: 21-50
Opinion: I do like the look of the
magazine, however, I would prefer
a more simplistic approach to my
magazine, therefore, I would not be
able to use this design.

Indie

Indie Magazines: Clash, Dazed,

Sassy and The Fly.
Artists/bands: The Smiths, The
1975, James Bay and Jake Bugg.
Classic Features: Bold title,
minimal text on cover, White
font, close up artist.
Audience: 17-25
Opinion: This is my favourite
style, simply because it does not
have too much going on and the
colour scheme merges well
together. It is also minimalistic
which I prefer and has an
audience, that is on my age.

House

House Magazines: Mixmag, Vibe,

House of music and NME.
Artists/bands: Calvin Harris,
Avicii, Calum Scott and Kungs.
Classic Features: Bright colour
scheme, close up artist, lots of
text.
Audience: 16-22
Opinion: I quite like this style of
magazine, however, I think that
there may be too much white
which does not look right.

Jazz

Jazz Magazines: Downbeat, Jazz

times and Jazzwise.
Artists/bands: Miles Davis, Gene
Krupa, King Oliver and Count
Basie.
Classic Features: Black and White
main image, smartly dressed,
red, yellow and blue colour
scheme.
Audience: 45-70
Opinion: The layout and colour
scheme of this magazine is smart
and professional; however, it is
aimed at an older target
audience and I would prefer a
younger one.

Pop

Pop Magazines: Top of the pops,

ipop, Sugar and We love Pop.
Artists/bands: Ariana Grande,
Sia, Rihanna and Fifth Harmony.
Classic Features: Bright colour
scheme, lots of text and images,
mainstream fashion.
Audience: 7-15
Opinion: Similar to the Rock
magazine, I prefer a more
simplistic approach and find this
magazine style too busy and
readers would not know what to
look at first.

Rap

Rap Magazines: Hip Hop, XXL,

Vibe and Giant.
Artists/bands: Bryson Tiller,
Drake, Migos and Tyga.
Classic Features: Bold text, grey,
yellow and red colour schemes.
Serious rappers on the front.
Audience: 16-25
Opinion: I like the colour scheme
of this magazine as I think it
makes the masthead and title
stand out more, however, I do
not listen to this music so would
not be able to write much about
it.

Chosen Style: Indie/Alternative Rock

I have chosen this genre because I like the
minimalistic theme that is in every Indie
magazine as it puts emphasis on the
masthead and the model. The White
masthead also stands out against the
background, which is important when trying
to market your magazine. I also enjoy Indie
music; therefore, I will be able to write more
in the articles. The design does also not
make the page look too busy, which I like
as it makes the reader look at the main
image first which is important when
promoting the artist that is on the cover
page. This genre also has a target audience
which fits my age group so I will be able to
put my own opinion of the music in there.
Indie music is not as popular as Pop music
which makes it easier to find the more
popular bands of Indie music so that I can
include them in my magazine.
