of Fire
Also known as the circumPacific belt, the Ring of Fire is a
40,000
km
(25,000
mile)
horseshoe-shaped basin that is
associated
with
a
nearly
continuous series of oceanic
trenches, volcanic arcs, and
volcanic
belts
and/or
plate
movements. This ring accounts for
452
volcanoes
(active
and
dormant), stretching from the
southern tip of South America, up
along the coast of North America,
across the Bering Strait, down
through Japan, and into New
Zealand with several active and
dormant volcanoes in Antarctica
What is a Volcano?
A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the
earth. When pressure builds up, eruptions occur. Gases and rock shoot up through the opening and spill
over or fill the air with lava fragments. Eruptions can cause lateral blasts, lava flows, hot ash flows,
mudslides, avalanches, falling ash and floods. Volcano eruptions have been known to knock down entire
forests. An erupting volcano can trigger tsunamis, flash floods, earthquakes, mudflows and rockfalls.
Volcanoes in Luzon
Mt. Mayon - active volcano, southeastern Luzon, Philippines, dominating the city
of Legaspi. Called the worlds most perfect cone, it has a base 80 miles (130 km) in
circumference and rises to 8,077 feet (2,462 meters) from the shores of Albay Gulf.
There have been more than 30 eruptions recorded since 1616; an eruption in 1993
caused 79 deaths. Subsequent eruptions in 2000 and 2006 forced tens of thousands
of people in nearby villages to evacuate. In December 2006, rains from powerful
Typhoon Durian caused mudslides and floods at the foot of the volcano that killed
more than 1,000 people. Its most destructive eruption was in 1814, when the town of
Cagsawa was buried.
Mt. Pinatubo active volcano, western Luzon, Philippines, 1,486 m., that
erupted in 1991 (for the first time in 600 years) and caused widespread devastation.
Mount Pinatubo is located about 55 miles (90 km) northwest of Manila and rose to a
height of about 4,800 feet (1,460 m) prior to its eruption. After two months of
emissions and small explosions, a series of major explosions began on June 12.
These explosions reached a peak on June 1416, producing a column of ash and
smoke more than 19 miles (30 km) high, with rock debris falling the same distance
from the volcano. The resulting heavy ashfalls left about 100,000 people homeless,
forced thousands more to flee the area, and caused 300 deaths.

Mt. Balungao - Mount Balungao is an extinct volcano located in Pangasinan,
Ilocos Region, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Rising to the height of 382
metres (1,253 ft) ASL, it is located in the town of Balungao, about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi)
from the town center. It is the main tourist attraction of the town, along with the
Balungao Hot and Cold Spring Resort nearby. Mount Balungao is listed as an inactive
volcano by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
The volcano is located in the flat agricultural region, near the border of the Province of
Nueva Ecija.
Volcanoes in Visayas
Mt. Kanlaon - Kanlaon has a peak elevation of 2,465 m (8,087 ft) at its
highest point. Also it's 2435 m (7,989 ft) in some sources, with a base diameter of
30 km (19 mi) and is dotted with pyroclastic cones and craters. Just below and
north of the summit is the active Lugud crater. North of Lugud is a 2 by 0.8 km
(1.24 by 0.50 mi) caldera, known as Margaja Valley, with a small crater lake.
The volcano has three hot springs on its slopes: Mambucal Hot Springs on the
northwest, Bucalan Hot Spring and Bungol Hot Spring. Its adjacent volcanic edifices are Mount Silay and Mount
Mandalagan, north of Kanlaon.
