Professional Goals
WTS #4
Teachers know how to teach.
The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies, including the use of
technology, to encourage children's development of critical thinking, problem solving, and
performance skills.
The first standard that I would like to focus on for professional growth is incorporating
meaningful technology in the classroom and in my lessons. I would like to use technology in a
way that can enhance student learning outcomes. I want to learn how to include different types
of technology and resources in my daily lessons and activities, because I believe that it can be
used as a tool to differentiate learning and make it more accessible for my students. I think that
technology incorporation would be useful in whole group guided lessons and activities, as well
as in small group or individual student practice or reinforcement of lesson content. I believe I
can learn more about using technology by collaborating with other educators, researching, and
trying a variety of sources with my students to see what works best and has the best outcomes.
I would also like to use technology as a resource to enhance my lessons and instruction. I
believe that including more technology can help make my lessons more engaging and can
enhance the subject matter for my students. My goal in learning to make better use of
technology in my classroom is to gain a variety of instructional strategies that will allow me to
better meet the needs of my students in my classroom.

Standard V: Instructional Decision Making
Accomplished teachers are effective instructional decision makers. They use a process of
assessing, planning, implementing, and reflecting to guide teaching and learning.
A second professional goal I would like to set is to grow in my understanding and
implementation of a variety instructional and assessment strategies. I believe that increasing my
knowledge of instructional strategies and practices can improve my teaching and have a greater
impact on student growth and learning. Having an understanding of many different practices
and strategies would allow me to add variety to my lessons and activities, in the hopes of
capturing student interest, meeting diverse student needs, and leading to more meaningful
learning outcomes. In addition to learning about a wide range of instructional strategies, I would
also like to gain more knowledge of assessment strategies. I would like to learn how to use a
variety of assessments in order to get a more complete understanding my students learning.
Through formal and informal assessments, I will be able to be more informed in my planning
and implementation of lessons that can meet the needs of my particular students. Assessment
data will allow me to adjust my lessons, activities, and instruction to meet the diverse needs

present in my classroom. My goal is to gain the knowledge and understanding of instructional

and assessment strategies that will allow me to be an effective instructional decision maker.

1e Designing Coherent Instruction
Designing coherent instruction including learning activities, instructional materials and
resources, instructional groups, lesson and unit structure.
My third professional goal is to grow in my ability to design units and lessons that are coherent
and strategic. I would particularly like to focus on unit design and structure. I believe that an
increased knowledge and understanding of unit design will allow me to create more meaningful
and cohesive lessons and activities for my students, and enhance their learning of the
curriculum content. In my current teaching practices, I believe I cover the curriculum material
adequately and do my best to include varied activities and lessons to engage my students in the
material. As a reflective educator, I am able to recognize that there are times when my
individual lessons lack a cohesiveness within the larger unit. I would like to be better at
determining unit outcomes and learning targets, so that my lessons connect and build in a
meaningful way. I believe I can grow in this standard by learning more about a variety of
instructional planning strategies, including backwards design, and becoming more familiar with
the curriculum goals of my school system. This would allow me to design more informed and
meaningful lessons and activities that will better connect to the curriculum and unit goals. I could
also grow in this standard by collaborating with other educators in an effort to gather other
strategies to try in my classroom. Through further research, collaboration, implementation, and
reflection, I hope to improve my ability to design coherent instruction that will ultimately lead to
increased student learning and understanding of curriculum content.
