Case 1: There is a park in your locality, which many people visit every day for morning walks
and other recreation purposes. Last year the Government has installed trash bins to keep the park
free of littering from. bottles, papers, plastic packets, etc. However, after 6 months the trash bins
breaks down due to various reasons. The government will not reinstall the bins anymore. You
have thought of installing the bins with your own money since no one is willing to do anything
about it, but you can only do it once. How can you insure that once you install the bins you can
reinstall it again after 6 months without further spending your own money? (Max 250 words)

Case 1 Solution:
For this case we have to build recycle bins made of concrete. Concrete recycle bins are
fixed, rigid and they dont break easily so we can build it using our money and we wont have to
build it again. The downside of this is concrete recycle bins are more expensive than normal
bins. We have to use thick plastic papers inside these concrete bins so that the bins will not get
dirty by the collected garbage. To cut the cost we can also use good quality steel recycle bins
which are fixed to the ground.

Case 2: Bangladesh government has discovered an island similar to St. Martin island within its
political boundaries. It has all the features of St. Martin including the wildlife. The Government
has asked you to create a sustainable ecosystem on the island so that it does not lose the very
features St Martin has lost over the years. You have been granted 10 million TK to create the
ecosystem. What and how would you do it? (Max 250 Words)

Case 2 Solution:
The island St. Martin once had a sustainable ecosystem but due to improper
implementation of laws, poor policy making and man-made pollution its ecosystem is facing

danger now. If a new island like St. Martin is discovered within our political boundaries it will
also have a sustainable ecosystem so we just to support or protect this ecosystem from various
man made pollutions and for that we have to implement laws & policies effectively. To do
something like that we may not need a grant as big as 10 million; we just have to create
awareness among general people.

Case 3: A small village community is habituated on the outskirts of a town. They suffer from
an exhausting condition of acute water shortage. The village is situated close to a flowing river
but the water is very dirty. They do have tube wells but it seems that every other tube well water
contains arsenic. It rains for 8 month a year and rest of the year its dry season. The villagers have
very limited money to work on a small project. You are assigned to solve their problem. How
would you do it and why would you think it will work? (Max 250 words)

Case 3 Solution:
For the rainy season the villagers can harvest rainwater. Harvesting rainwater can be
affordable for most of the villagers if they use plastic paper bags for collecting water into
homemade water storage tanks. Every house will have a separate tank for collecting and storing
water. For the dry seasons they may have to use river water by treating it through cheap and
homemade purification system. They can also establish a cheap arsenic water treatment center in
their village from which everyone will collect water.
We think this idea will work for the villagers because it is the most economical for them
and for most part of the year the villagers will have adequate water supply.

Case 4: We need to save Earth said Shoptok a student of the department of environmental
studies. "The Earth doesn't need your help" said Sarita. "Yes it does, we need to prevent the
planet from getting polluted and being destroyed, save the animals and what not!". Sarita looked
at him for a while and said Do you realize how selfish we are to say we need to save planet
Earth?... let's just save the environment, Earth doesn't need your help. What is Sarita trying to
say? What does she mean by that? (Max 250 Words)

Case 4 Solution:
Degradation of the environment through pollution and man-made destruction threatens
our existence in planet earth. These threats are not harmful enough for the extinction of planet
earth, in fact our planet can cope up with these changes and form a different kind of ecosystem.
But there will be no place for us in that system. So when we say planet Earth needs our saving
we are saying that because as humans our existence is threatened by the new formed ecosystem.
That is selfish! We should rather try to save our environment for us.
This is what Sarita is trying to say.

CASE 5: Is globalization helping to increase or decrease global warming? Why do you think
so? (Max 250 words)

Case 5 Solution:
In one word globalization is definitely contributing to the increase in global warming. But
there is no stopping this phenomenon because only through globalization we can achieve
sustainable growth and common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.
Globalization is promoting rapid growth and industrialization in every corner of the world which
promotes to increase global warming.

Case 6:
Answer the following in the context of Bangladesh:
Identify a problem that you think is a BIG EVNIRONMENTAL PROBLEM.

Why do you think it is a problem?

Identify and explain the need for immediate attention? (Significance of the problem)

Provide suitable solutions

Justify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed solutions

How feasible is the implementation of the proposed solutions considering that we

are a poor nation?

(Max 500 words)

Case 6 Solution:
We think that shortage of green area in urban landscape in a big environmental problem
in our time especially for a city like Dhaka. Most of the people living in Dhaka city do not get
enough green space due to poor city planning and shortage of lands.
This problem is significant because it is directly linked to the health of our citizens.
Adequate green space or parks around our living places can bring us joy and happiness.
To provide a solution to this we need more space which we do not have in our city. So we
can promote community gardening, apartment gardening, rooftop gardening in general urban
gardening. We will provide information about different types of plants and how to grow these
plants at home comfortably.
We will also take care of other peoples plants and water them. We will also have an effective
home delivery system to deliver our plants to our clients. Through this initiative most apartments
in Dhaka city can have a garden of its own and rooftop gardening will become an easy and
soothing thing to do for all of us.
To become effective we have to implement this idea for a very small area in our city and
if we can sustain this in that area it will grow on its own. We also need the help of local people to
start this project. Social media can play an important role in generating interest among the
general people. Another effective way is organizing a Gardening festival where people will find
adequate tools and information to start their own garden. If the people in our city accepts the idea
of home gardening at large they can promote to create green space around their homes.
Our solution is cheap and feasible because people will pay to create green environment
around them individually. Also promoting the idea of gardening and Creating a start-up
gardening solutions company does not need a lot of cash.
So with a trivial amount we can have a solution to the shortage of green area in urban
landscape in our city.
