Telling My Story

Abstract
I have choose to review my successes through Domain B of the California Teaching Performance
Expectations which focuses on assessments. A teacher should use a variety of assessment tools,
interpret the assessment properly, adjust instruction as needed and provide correct
accommodations for students. Assessments are the checkpoints for instruction so I have included
a variety of assessments to show my competency.

Telling My Story
I didnt always know I wanted to be a teacher but as I spend more time in the classroom
interacting with students I know I have chosen the right career path. I have just completed my
student teaching and I am currently substitute teaching. I have been around teachers for most of
my life and I have seen how important the position truly is and how you are given the
opportunity daily to make an impact. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching seventh grade and my
goal is to hopefully get a permanent position in a middle school classroom.
Domain B
Domain B focuses on a teachers ability to assess student learning through a variety of
assessments and how to interpret that information clearly. Through out my student teaching I was
consistently assessing student learning in the classroom. I have used informal assessments such
as listening to partners share ideas, have students submit quick writes to check for understating
and Kahoot gamification The formal assessments I have used include testing, opened- ended
questions, Google Slides and essays. Through the exploration of assessments I believe I have
become competent in assessing student learning through a variety of tools.
My strength for Domain B is using a variety of assessments to assess student learning and
collect evidence of individual and whole class learning, including performance-based realworld applications, questioning strategies, work samples and products (Commission on Teacher
Credentialing, 2013). During my student teaching I wanted to engage the student in as many
formal and informal assessments to determine my success as a new teacher. My strengths were in
collecting whole class and individual assessments. I also have successfully communicated to
parents regarding assessment skills.

My needs are focusing on adjusting instruction based on the assessment scores. I need
practice to ensure all English language learner assessments are completed when checking
specifically for their understanding. Having students self assess their own work prior to
submitting would have greatly benefited some of their writing projects. Since students can also
benefit from peer assessment I would like to use that more often in my classroom. Students
should be able to review and peer editing of their papers to improve their own writing skills.
Domain B of the California Teaching Performance Expectations also includes Candidates
understand how to familiarize students with the format of state-adopted assessment program.
(2013). I am not familiar with how to administer the testing or the adaptations needed for special
education students.
Competencies
For Domain B I will include the Excel spreadsheets from one of the Kahoot reviews we
used to review point of view with the students. I think the Kahoot provides a great platform for
informal assessments that the students enjoy. The Excel spreadsheets show whole class
assessments and individual records as well. If a majority of the class answered incorrectly there
is a perfect opportunity to reteach.
Another assessment tool I would use with my PDQP would be a self-assessment guide that
I used to also grade their work. The students were provided with a self- assessment sheet for a
Google Slide project on Esperanza Rising. The students were to complete the self- assessment
and then I used the same sheet to grade their slides. The assessment was provided to have student
review the rubric against the work they had completed and make changes.
The last artifact included will be a literature review of an Edutopia article about how selfassessment inspires students to learn. By having the students create a personal reflection and

evaluate their own work there was an improvement in student portfolios for Mr. Yoshidas class.
Rational
All of the domains include integral parts of the teaching process and I have many areas that
I need to improve in. I have chosen Domain B for my professional needs and goals because so
much of instruction is based on assessments. If a teacher cannot properly assess student learning
they are not able to modify instruction for student success. If an assessment is too easy the
teacher is not truly checking for understanding. The ability to have student assess their own
learning provides a road map for instructors. Teachers need to be able to interpret assessments
correctly and use a variety of assessment tools to clearly communicate the competencies of the
students. Assessments are the checkpoints to ensure students comprehend the materials as you
continue through a unit lesson.
