Final: Creative Anthropological Accounts: 30%:

Due Thursday December 8th

This project will serve as a culmination of all methodological, theoretical
and ideological tools learned this semester through the production of a short
film/media project (1-2 minutes in length) OR a mini Graphic Novel (5-7
pages, with a minimum of 6 frames per page) OR Zine (at least 7-10 pages,
at sheet size) along with a 5-7 page discussion paper.
Your short film/graphic novel/zine/other creative outcome should explore a
particular topic as it relates to sex, gender and/or sexuality and, as discussed
in course texts, may employ the use of art, stories, poetry, narratives, recipes
and so forth. For this project you are not required to conduct formal
interviews however the nature of the project requires a great deal of
planning ahead. As mentioned in class you ARE NOT REQUIRED to
connect this to the work you did in your first project NOR are you required
to conduct any interview! These projects may be collaborative, where you
work with a group or others, or you may produce it on your own. Students
should set up a time to meet with me at least 2 weeks BEFORE the due date
to discuss topics and outcomes!
The deliverables for this project include:
1) your creative account (a website link, a paper copy of your Zine or
graphic novel, a DVD of your film, etc.) AND
2) 5-7 Page Paper that
A) introduces and provides background for the topic
B) explores the importance or significance of this topic to our understanding
of gender/sex/sexuality
C) what creative method you are using and why
Papers should be in 12-point font, Times, Times New Roman, or
Cambria, double-spaced with standard margins.
All papers must include a works cited page with a minimum of THREE (3)
Peer Reviewed texts cited! You may use texts from the class OR outside
of the class!
A) Zine Guidelines:
Your zine should explore a particular topic as it relates to sex, gender, and or
sexuality and, as discussed in course texts, may employ the use of art,
stories, poetry, narratives, recipes and so forth. Your zine should be 7-10
pages (1/4 sheet size) and utilize course readings/media to highlight your
topic exploration.

B) Graphic Novel Guidelines:

The graphic novel will explore your topic through the narrative style
employed in Sexile. These may be produced with electronic media OR with
non-electronic media. Graphic novels produced electronically, and nonelectronically, must exhibit a clear investment of time. Artistic quality will
not be factored into the grading process.
The graphic novel must cover a minimum of 5 to 7 pages, with 6
frames per page. You may use full-sheet or sheet pages and may use
front and back of the sheet. ONE SHEET OF PAPER=2 PAGES if both
sides of the sheet of paper are used! TOTAL FRAMES REQUIRED=3042 ANY SIZE OR SHAPE (half sheet, full sheet, etc)
C) Other Guidelines:
If you would like to create some other kind of creative outcome (an
art installation, a map following your work from the first project, an
applied/public flyer for use by the community you worked with, etc) that is
not a zine or graphic novel, you should free to! The best way to determine
whether what you would like to do meets the requirements of this project is
to contact me FIRST so that we can discuss your plans!
D: Discussion Paper Guidelines:
The discussion paper will explore your topic in the traditional
academic written format. The paper must be a minimum of 5 pages (NOT
including title page or works cited page). Your paper should address the
following elements of your topic:
1) Your introductory paragraph: 1/2 page: Clear statement of topic and
how it is connected to sex, gender or sexuality in a global or local
sense. THESIS STATEMENT!
a. (For example: In this paper and graphic novel I explore how
ideologies of gender normativity encourage us to fit within a
gender binary when going to the gym.)
2) Background of topic: 2-3 pages: For example, the topic of gay
marriage would require background discussion of how sexuality is
managed, how we define marriage and how the topic articulates with
this.
3) Discussion of topic: 2-3 pages: Why does it matter? What scholarly
material addresses these topics or the elements that make of the topic?
What is the relationship of ideology to this topic?

4) Media/Graphic novel exploration: 1/2 page: How does your media

project explore this topic? How does this format allow for a different
navigation of the topic?
5) Works Cited page: Does NOT count towards your 3-5 page
requirement! However, it IS required! This page should ONLY
include materials you cite in your paper! You MUST include a
minimum of 3 PEER PREVIEWED citations in your works cited
page! You may include other citations, such as media sources or news
reports however these will NOT count towards your minimum of 3
peer reviewed citations! Remember, a peer-reviewed source is
generally a scholarly journal article, a book, a chapter from a book, or
reports. Wikipedia, while helpful, IS NOT a peer reviewed source, nor
is the dictionary, any website, blog or news media source. If you have
questions or need help identifying peer-reviewed sources related
to your topic, please let me know and I can help you!
Note: I WILL READ DRAFTS! Please ensure that drafts are sent to me
at LEAST 24 hours BEFORE the due date. You may submit as many
drafts as you like!
