Police seek hit-
skip driver
At 4:46 p.m. on Saturday,
Delphos Police investigated
a hit-and-run collision that
occurred when an unknown
driver failed to stop at a stop
sign.
Amanda Teman, 20, of
Delphos, was traveling west-
bound on East Sixth Street
when she entered the intersec-
tion of Sixth and Scott streets.
A second vehicle traveling
southbound on Scott Street
failed to stop at the Sixth
Street stop sign and struck
Teman’s vehicle. The vehicle
then left the scene.
There were no known inju-
ries and moderate damage
done to Teman’s vehicle.

on the driver of the hit-skip
vehicle should contact the
Delphos Police Department at

traffic accident occurred when
the driver of one vehicle failed
to see a second vehicle slow-
ing down ahead of them.
Nancy Clay, 30, of Delphos,
was traveling northbound on
State Route 66 toward the
intersection of State Route 66
North and North Street when
Daniel Agler, 19, of Van
Wert, began to slow down
in front of her as the person
in front of him prepared to
turn. Clay failed to see Agler
decrease speed and struck his
vehicle with her own.
There were no injuries and
minor to moderate damage to
the vehicles.
Clay was cited for an
assured clear distance ahead

Lisa Youngpeter, 23, of
Delphos was traveling behind
a gold Pontiac Montana on
Fort Jennings Road approach-
ing Krieft Street when the
driver slowed and stopped
abruptly in front of her, caus-
ing her to strike the van in
the rear. Youngpeter stated
that the driver, described as
a white male approximately
5’9” with medium black hair
and a stocky build, then exited
the vehicle, laughed at her and
then left the scene.
There were no injuries and
minor damage to Youngpeter’s
vehicle.

Robert E. “Bob” Webb, 78,
of Delphos, died at 8 p.m.
Saturday at his granddaugh-
ter’s residence in Elida.
He was born Feb. 23, 1932,
in Kentucky to William and
Haley (Hayes) Webb, who
preceded him in death.
He married Dorothy Barker,
who survives in Delphos.
Survivors also include a
son, Brian Webb of Delphos;
a daughter, Casey (Keith)
Follis, of Georgia; five sis-
ters; a stepson, Alan (Juanita)
of Van Wert; a granddaughter
he raised, Jill (Eric) Diller of
Elida; and three grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death
by a stepdaughter, Donna
Stocklin; a stepson, Bobby
Dean Neal; and three brothers.
Mr. Webb worked at Ford
Motor Co. for 31 years and
was a member of the United
Auto Workers union. He loved
to play bingo and spend time
with his great-grandsons.

begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday
at Harter and Schier Funeral
Home, the Rev. David Howell
officiating. Burial will follow
in Blue Creek Cemetery.

Healthcare of Delphos.
She was born Aug. 17,
1905, in Allen County to Fred
and Lula (Roberts) Roeder.
On Aug. 21, 1926, she was
married to Frank Conway,
who died in December 1972.
Survivors include a sister,
Vera Chiles, of Delphos; a
special niece and a special
nephew, Anita Dunlap and
Harvey Chiles Jr.; and several
other nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in
death by two brothers, Ralph
and Emmett Roeder; and
three sisters, Cathryn Carroll,
Helen Stager and Lillian
Niles.
Mrs. Conway was a sec-

treasurer and Longemeier
Direct Mail in Lima, where
she retired after 15 years.
She was a member of First
United Presbyterian Church,
Delphos. She liked to play
bridge.

Helen L. (Hunt) Brenneman
Welsh, 91, of Delphos, died at
12:15 p.m. Saturday at Van
Wert County Hospital.
She was born Oct. 19,
1918, in Lima, to Roy and
Pearl (Reeder) Hunt, who pre-
ceded her in death.
She was married to Richard
Brenneman, who died in 1987.
She then married Kenneth
Welsh, who died in 1991.
Survivors include two sons,
Marvin (Nancy) Brenneman of
Delphos and Michael (Patty)
Brenneman of Cincinnati;
eight grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren; and
Sandra McMean, who was
like a daughter to her.
She was preceded in death
by two brothers, Roy Hunt
Jr. and Thomas Hunt; three
infant siblings, Howard, Bryan
and Ruth; and a son, James
Brenneman.
Mrs. Welsh was a school-
teacher for Elida for 17 years.
She was a member of Trinity
United Methodist Church. She
was a 1936 graduate of Lima
Central and a 1963 graduate
of Ohio Northern. She was a
member of the Allen County
Retired Teachers and she vol-
unteered for Jefferson Middle
School after her retirement.

at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Harter
and Schier Funeral Home, the
Rev. David Howell officiat-
ing. Burial will be in Walnut
Grove Cemetery.

friend Kevin ‘Scott” Frasl.
Ms. Woodworth was
employed for many years
by the Delphos City Schools
as the librarian at Franklin
Elementary School. She
also worked for the city at
the Delphos city pool. She
was a 1972 Jefferson High
School graduate and member
of Trinity United Methodist
Church. She was passionate
about her Franklin students
that she worked with. She
enjoyed knitting hats, crafts,
taking stats at Jefferson
softball games, sold tickets
for Jefferson football and
basketball games, loved
animals and was a special
friend to many people.

11 a.m. Thursday at Harter
and Schier Funeral Home,
the Rev. David Howell offi-
ciating. Burial will follow in

On May 29, 1970, she mar-
ried Donald G. Helmkamp,
who survives.
Survivors also include niec-
es and nephews, Ron Huysman,
Don Huysman, Robert Hiett,
Daniel Hiett, Greg Huysman,
Jane Place, Sue Schneider and
Debbie Shelley.
She was preceded in death
by three brothers, Howard
“Shorty” Huysman, Waldo
“Bounce” Huysman and Leroy
“Jiggs” Huysman; a sister,
Marie Hiett; two nieces, Irene
Hiett and Becky Minnig; and a
nephew, Gary Huysman.
Mrs. Helmkamp had been
a bank teller for 35 years
at Peoples National Bank,
Delphos. She had also been
an elections precinct worker
for 25 years. She was a 1943
graduate of St. John’s High
School and a member of St.
John the Evangelist Catholic
Church, where she had donat-
ed her time working at the
parish festival and being a col-
lections counter for 25 years.
She was an avid reader and
greatly enjoyed playing cards
and dominoes.

WASHINGTON — Robert
C. Byrd, the longest serving
member of the U.S. Senate, a
fiery orator and hard-charging
power broker who steered bil-
lions of federal dollars to his
beloved West Virginia, died
today. He was 92.
A spokesman for the fami-
ly, Jesse Jacobs, said that Byrd
died peacefully at about 3 a.m.
at Inova Hospital in Fairfax,
Va. He had been in the hospital
since late last week.
At first Byrd was believed to
be suffering from heat exhaus-
tion and severe dehydration,
but other medical conditions
developed. He had been in frail
health for several years.
A man of humble,
Depression-era upbringing,
Byrd held his seat for over
50 years, working tirelessly
all that time to make sure
his state never missed out on
its share — or even more, in
some cases — of the federal
largesse. He was the Senate’s
majority leader for six of those
years and was third in the
line of succession to the presi-

Crossroads, can reach its goal
of raising $52 million by

network on successful opera-
tions created by Democrats

American Crossroads is a
527 organization — named
for a section in the tax law
— that is exempt from limits
on campaign fundraising and

The GOP is set to grill
Kagan on hot-button issues
from guns to abortion to cam-
paign finance, arguing that
she’d bring liberal politics
and an antimilitary bias to the
job of a justice.
“She’ll have to convince
me that all of this liberalism
that she’s lived with all her
life can be put in a proper
place and when she gets to be
a judge she’ll be left of cen-
ter but within the mainstream
of judging,” Sen. Lindsey
Graham, R-S.C., said on “Fox
News Sunday.”
For the second summer in
a row, a woman chosen by
President Barack Obama is
appearing before the Judiciary
Committee for televised hear-
ings in a cavernous room on
Capitol Hill, where the ques-
tioning by senators is seldom
polite but nominees rarely if
ever go off-script.
If confirmed, the 50-year-
old Kagan would be the fourth
woman to join the Supreme
Court, and her swearing-in
intelligence about his where-
abouts.
Panetta estimated there
are fewer than 100 al-Qaida
militants operating inside
Afghanistan, with the rest
hiding along Pakistan’s
mountainous western border.
He said U.S. drone strikes
and other spy operations have
helped to “take down” half of
al-Qaida’s senior leaders.
“We are engaged in the
most aggressive operations in
the history of the CIA in that
part of the world, and the
result is that we are disrupt-
ing their leadership,” Panetta
said.
At the same time, Panetta
offered a less upbeat assess-
ment of the U.S. fight against
the Taliban, the anti-U.S.
insurgency operating inside
Afghanistan’s borders.
When asked whether the
Taliban has grown stronger
since Obama took office,
Panetta said the Taliban was
acting more violent and being
more aggressive in “going
after our troops,” including
its use of roadside bombs.
There is progress, he said,
even if it’s “slower than I
think anyone anticipated.”
As challenges in
Afghanistan remain, the
political clock is ticking.
But eyebrows rose in polit-
ical circles when the group
filed its next monthly report
with the Internal Revenue
Service, showing only $200
raised in May.
Steven Law, a former
U.S. Chamber of Commerce
lawyer and now president of
American Crossroads, said
the group has about $30 mil-
lion in pledges that Rove,
Gillespie and others secured
during recent trips to various
cities.
“We feel very good about
the progress we’ve made,”
Law said, predicting a strong
fundraising report for June.
He said the idea for
American Crossroads grew
from talks last fall involv-
ing Rove, Gillespie and other
conservatives who feel liber-
als outhustled the GOP after
the McCain-Feingold cam-
paign finance law in 2002 and
subsequent court rulings set
new limits — and opportuni-
ties — for political activities.
The goal, Law said, is to
build “an enduring and robust
outside organization that can,
in the long run, compete with
the very successful groups the
Democrats have built.”
Pro-Democratic groups
that Law and others cite as
role models include Moveon.
org, Democracy Alliance —
founded by liberal billion-
aire George Soros — and
Democracy Corps, founded

The White House and
Senate Democrats are paint-
ing Kagan, the first woman
to be dean of Harvard Law
School or to hold the job of
solicitor general, as a pio-
neering figure and brilliant

call conservatives, includ-
ing two who served in the
administration of George W.
Bush — Harvard Law School
professor Jack Goldsmith
and former Solicitor General
Greg Garre — in a bid to
dispel GOP charges that she’s
a liberal rubber-stamp for
Obama.
The GOP has worked to
brand her a liberal extrem-
ist who betrayed the nation
during wartime, and plans to
try to bolster its case by spot-
lighting Kagan’s dispute with
the Pentagon over military
recruiting at Harvard and the
policy against openly gay sol-
diers. Its witnesses later this
week include three veterans.
While at Harvard, Kagan
barred recruiters from the
career services office because
the military’s policy on
homosexuality violated the
school’s nondiscrimination
rules. She was also strong-
ly critical of the “don’t ask,
don’t tell” policy.
Many of Obama’s most
ardent Democratic support-
ers on Capitol Hill have said
they are wary that more U.S.
troops and money can solve
the problem.
Sen. Carl Levin, chairman
of the Senate Armed Services
Committee, said troops should
begin pulling out in July 2011,
as Obama promised, because
the Afghans must get the mes-
sage that they need to take
responsibility for their country.
Levin, D-Mich., said he
even would like to see a
major military operation in
Kandahar delayed until more
Afghans can join the fight. He
estimated fewer than 9,000
Afghan forces are operating
in Kandahar — a fraction
of those needed to take con-
trol of the city known as the
Taliban’s spiritual heartland.
“If we want to succeed,
the Afghans have got to suc-
ceed,” he said.
Other Democrats suggest-
ed they are sympathetic to the
complexities Obama faces.
The Taliban have “been
running these areas for years
now, and the idea we’re going
to walk in and they’re going to
run away, I think, was never
contemplated,” said Sen. Jack
Reed, D-R.I. “This is a tough
fight, unfortunately.”

The Swift Boat group
stirred lots of controversy,

Crossroads undoubtedly
will rile Democrats, but its
founders and leaders are
mainstream, well-regarded
Republicans with experience
in the White House, Congress
and national campaigns.
Four affiliated political
groups, some of them several
years old, are working closely
with American Crossroads.
They don’t hesitate to admit
they are trying to catch up
with Democratic rivals.
A Gillespie-founded group
called Resurgent Republic
“seeks to replicate on the right

it wrapped up production last
week after 53 years on the air.
The Daytime Emmy Awards
may have eased some of that
pain with hardware.

awards for a daytime drama
on Sunday’s Daytime Emmy
Awards. The awards show
was aired live from the Las
Vegas Hilton.
West beckoned her sob-

in the award. Park said he may
give his trophy to his grand-
mother, who has been watch-
ing “As the World Turns” for

Ohio Valley Gold and Silver Refinery Arrives
Today in Van Wert for a 5 Day Event!

Been following the gold and
silver market lately? Well if you have
a jewelry box or lock box full of gold
or a coffee can full of old coins you
should be according to Ohio Valley
Refinery spokesperson John Miller.
“The gold and silver markets have not
been this strong for over 30 years” said
Miller. Typically when the U.S. dollar
is weak and the economy is flat gold
and silver markets soar. “That’s good
news if you are setting on a few gold
necklaces or an old class ring” says
Miller.
Starting Monday at 9am and every
day this week through Friday, the
Ohio Valley Refinery will be setting
up a satellite refinery right here in
Van Wert at the Holiday Inn Express.
During their 5 day stay anyone can
bring gold, silver or platinum items and
turn them in for immediate payment,
explains John Miller. “Just about
everybody has some amount of gold
or silver just lying around collecting
dust and this week anybody can sell
theirs direct to our refinery. Typically
selling direct to a refinery is reserved
for larger wholesale customers like
jewelry stores, pawn shops, and
laboratories” says Miller. “We are
changing how business is done” he
explains “we want to do business with
everybody so we took our business to
the streets”. “Our teams visits various
cities around the country hosting 5 day
events allowing the general public to
take advantage of our services. The
turnout has been overwhelming” says
Miller. “Usually each day is busier
than the previous day. It seems once
people come to us and sell something
they are so amazed what an old ring
or gold coin is worth they go home
and start digging around for more and
telling relatives, friends and neighbors.

Got Coin? It might be just the
time to cash in. This week starting
Monday and continuing through
Friday the International Collectors
Association in conjunction with the
Ohio Valley Gold & Silver Refinery
will be purchasing all types of silver
and gold coins direct from the public.
All types are welcome and the event
is free.
Collectors will be on hand to
identify and sort your coins. Then the
quality or grade will be determined.
The better the grade the more they are
worth according to collectors I talked
to. With the silver and gold markets
high prices of older coins are too. Any
coins minted before 1964 in the U.S.
are 90% silver except nickels and
pennies.
The coins worth is determined
by the rarity and the grade. Old silver
dollars are worth a great premium
right now even well worn heavy
circulated ones are bringing good
premiums. Franklin and Kennedy
halves, Washing ton quarters,
Mercury and Roosevelt dimes are
all worth many times the face value.
While older types like Seated Liberty,
Standing Liberties, and Barber coins
are worth even more.
Gold coins are really worth a
lot right now according to Brian
Eades of the International Collectors
Association. This country didn’t start
minting coins until 1792 says Eades.
Before that people would trade
goods using gold dust and nuggets.
Some shop keepers would take more
gold than needed to pay for items
purchased. There was no uniform

flatware sets to old coins. I think during
this bad economy everybody can use
extra money but most people say they
are taking advantage of selling direct
to our refinery because of the higher
prices we pay”.
During this special event anyone
is welcome to bring all types of gold,
silver and platinum to the refinery
and turn it in for instant payment. The
types of items they will accept include
all gold jewelry, gold coins, gold
ounces, dental gold, old coins made
before 1964 including Silver Dollars,
halves, quarters and dimes, anything
marked “sterling” including flat ware
sets, tea pots, silver bars, silver ounces
and all industrial precious metals.
What should you expect if you
go to the event to sell your gold and/
or silver? Just gather up all gold silver
and platinum in any form. If you are
not sure if its gold or silver bring it in
and they will test it for free. When you
arrive at the event you will be asked to
fill out a simple registration card and
system of making change.
The government opened the first
mints and began distributing the
coins in 1792. By the beginning of
the 19th century coins and paper
currency were wide spread and our
monetary system was here to stay. In
1933 Roosevelt required all banking
institutions to turn in all gold coins.
Once all banks turned in this gold
the president raised the gold standard
from $20.00 per ounce to $33.00
per ounce. This was his way of
stimulating the economy during the
great depression. However gold coins
were never redistributed after the
recall. Not all gold coins were turned
in. Many folks during that time didn’t
completely trust the government and
choose to keep their gold.
These gold coins are sought
after collectors today and bring many
times the face value. Any gold coins
with the mint marks of CC, D or O
will bring nice premiums. Collectors
at the event will be glad to show
you where to look. Other types of
coins will also be purchase including
foreign coins, Indian head cents, two
cent pieces, half dimes, three cent
pieces and buffalo nickels to name a
few.
Collectors warn people against
trying to clean their coins as
significant damage can be done and
the coins value lessened.

be available. When your number is
called you will be escorted to a table
where your items will be examined,
tested and sorted. This only takes a
few minutes using their expertise and
specialized equipment. Items will be
counted and/or weighed. The value of
the items will be determined based on
up to the minute market prices. Live
feeds will be available at the event
displaying current market prices of
all precious metals. If you choose to
sell your items they will be bagged
and tagged and you will be escorted
to the cashier to collect your payment.
Waiting time to sell your items may
range from just a few minutes to 1
hour so bring something to read.

Hundreds of phone calls
from local residents this week to
the corporate office of the Ohio
Valley Gold and Silver Refinery
pour in inquiring about items to
be purchased all this week by the
team of antique buyers that is on
site with OVGSR.
The team of buyers this
week are purchasing a vast array
of vintage items (see below)
along with coins, gold jewelry,
and sterling silver items the
refinery deals in. It is a Local
shot in the arm for our economy.
The spokesperson for the event
expects to spend in excess of
$200,000.00 this week at the
Holiday Inn Express paying
local residents on the spot. The
spokesperson for the company
explained that these collectors are
paying collector price for vintage
items. It’s a great way for people
to get a great value for their items.
