Pink for girls, blue for boys. These notions of rigid gender binarism are what have
inhabited our minds for centuries, and tint our perceptions of anothers true ever
evolving personality. The roles of sex and gender are ingrained into our conscious
beings, and are inherently restrictive human beliefs.
Fashion, in itself, is a paradox. A world where both extremes exist, a genderless space
versus an exuberantly binary one, all thoughts and beliefs are given the chance to
represent themselves. With changing perceptions and fashion increasingly reflecting
social trends, a zeitgeist towards a genderless space is taking place, one fold at a time.
At BE. Magazine, we believe that gender roles are officially dead, as should be
intolerance of any kind. We aim to appeal to you with our minimal, gender fluid
fashion portrayals, and our visibly naked and honest visuals. The REAL issue is exactly
what it is, real. Real people, real meaning, and real narratives. A story on each page,
we urge you to look deeper within yourself to see beyond fabric on a surface, and
question the meaning of overarching themes that have for so long, been coded into
our DNA.
BE. Magazine wants to show its readers the real world today, and give faces to
whispers that are lost in the wind, and dreams that have only been dreams.
As a first time launch, we invite you to BE. a part of our family (pun intended).
Rethink stereotypes, embrace individuality.
Signing off,
team BE.

Flower crowns are so passe`, as are glow bands

and heavy makeup. This festival season, gear up
with the seasons latest trends, without looking
like youre attending a Grecian-themed wedding
or a Halloween do.
With Nh7, Supersonic, Sunburn and Submerge
all right underneath the mistletoe, revamp your
festival closet for some serious street style chic.
Crop tops and denim diasy dukes are dead, lets
face it. Trade in those ripped jeans for some
loveable overalls, and those crop tops for some
baby tees.
Hipster or not, printed anything has been done,
over and over again. Pair metallics with monochromes for a little bit of shine in your festival
wardrobe.
Athleisure rules, and we hope it never runs
away. Nobody wants sore feet, so opt for simple
flats or the worlds favorite shoe brand at the
moment, Adidas. Do sports luxe with a hint of
sequins and embellishment, clash is cool. For
those channeling hipster chic, velvet and leather
ought to do the trick.
Bring in a little plaid or denim, and wham, youll
have your geek mojo shining bright.
Breaking it down further, here are some of this
years biggest trends for that effortless street-

BE.

chic vibe : Denim, denim, denim and more denim, oh and dont forget those vintage patches!
Plaid, as is obvious this time of the year.
Throw in a few sparkles for some fun, but keep
it pastel and perfect. Velvet anything, honestly.
White on white is always a failsafe, plus uber
stylish. Last but not the least, wear joggers
instead of pants, an Instagram favorite. Throw
some shade with those reflective sunnies,
theyre seriously cool.
Glitter tattoos are slowly fading away, and are
being replaced by sparkling crystals and bindis
for ornamentation, along with body paint in new
and creative patterns.
Keep your makeup simple, focus on big lashes
and Kylie Jenner-esque lips, and give your skin
the glo it deserves. Wear your hair big, or wear
your hair messy, just dont forget to wear your
hair in buns and braids.
Combine sporty hipster with LA glamour, and
youre all set to take off. All in all, tis the season
to be jolly, so let your clothes do the talking.
And dont forget to wear that smile, who knows
what presents a three day festival weekend
might bring.

Go with the flow,

Makeup took a different turn this season, what with Versace and
McQuen sending their models out with a classic smokey eye,
but with a twist from the lower lid. Blackcurrent lips and pale
skin graced the runways at Marc Jacobs, Dior and Rodarte, and
graphic liner had its big moment at Chanel, Fendi, Altuzarra and
Akris. Glitter power was seen at Tommy Hilfiger, Burberry and
Anthony Vaccarello.
Hair continues to change and define an individual, and some
of the coolest hair trends were seen at Zac Posen, Gucci, Stella
McCartney, Ferragamo and Prada.
From textured big hair, to messy knots and old school marcel
waves, this season has us wanting it all.

THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY added 1200 new words this week, including
GENDER FLUID.
The venerated keepers of the English language define the term as (a) (in early use) not clearly or
wholly male or female; androgynous; (b) designating a person who does not identify with a single
fixed gender of or relating to a person having or expressing a fluid or unfixed gender identity.

ONE MAN GUY - Guess whos coming to dinner?

Aleksander Khederian doesnt need or want summer school but his strict
Armenian-American parents think its the best way for him to stay on the
honoured track. Just when he thinks his summer couldnt get any worse
he meets Ethan. Cool, confident and adventurous, Ethan is everything
Alex wishes he could be. As he is drawn closer to Ethans alluring persona,
Alex realizes that he might want to be a bit more than just friends., with
the attractive skate boader, but how will his family, so embedded in their
culture and traditional ideas react when he breaks the news?

TO READ

ADAM - Just passing through

Hilarious, raunchy, and wicked smart, Ariel Schrag takes readers down
the YA rabbit hole to a LGBT wonderland. Awkward and woefully
inexperienced, Adam flees the sanctuary of California to spend the
summer with his closeted older sister, Casey. As she draws him deeper
and deeper into the exciting lesbian subculture she calls home, he finds
that many of the beautiful women sorrounding him believe hes trans.
Why else would a fresh-faced, wide-eyed be wandering around in their
inner circles?

GUARDIAN - Fighting a flawed system

Taking a leaf from Katniss Everdeens book, Syd is a bit too busy starting a
revolution to really be concerned about falling in love. As you can imagine,
it manages to find him any way. Proxy introduced readers to the dystopian
world that Syd inhabited, a world where he was a Proxy, a second class
citizen meant to serve. Syds homosexuality is revealed while he and Knox,
the boy he once served, attempt to rebel against the system. Though Syds
crushes remain unrequited, Alex Londons sequel Guardian introduces
bodyguard Liam, whos willing to do anything to stay at Syds side.

SPECTRUM
Fashion is an industry that houses every
extremity, and it comes as no surprise that the
fashion world is full of queer members. But at the
same time, despite its symbiotic relationship with
the odd, it upholds rigid notions of binary gender.
As an industry that relies on exploiting these
differences to sell more products, it is currently
spectator to a seismic shift thats taking place.
For many people, the terms gender and sex
are used interchangeably, and thus incorrectly.
This idea has become so common, that it is rarely
questioned. When we are born, we are assigned a
sex, and sent out into the world. For many people,
this is cause for little, if any dissonance. Yet
biological sex and gender are different; gender
is not inherently nor solely connected to ones
physical anatomy.
Sex includes physical attributes such as external
genitalia, sex chromosomes, gonads, sex
hormones, and internal reproductive structures.
At birth, it is used to assign sex, that is, to identify
individuals as male or female. Gender on the
other hand, is far more complicated. It is the
complex interrelationship between an individuals

BE.

sex (gender biology), ones internal sense of

self as male, female, both or neither (gender
identity) as well as ones outward presentations
and behaviors (gender expression) related to that
perception, including their gender role. Together,
the intersection of these three dimensions leads
to the production of ones authentic sense of
gender, both in how people experience their own
gender as well as how others perceive it.
Gender is all around us. Like water surrounding
creatures in the sea, we are often unaware
of its ever-present nature. Gender is actually
taught to us from the moment we are born.
Gender expectations and messages bombard
us constantly, our upbringing, culture, peers,
schools, community, media, and religion are
some of the many influences that shape our
understanding of this core aspect of the self.
How we learn and interact with gender as young
children directly influences how we view the
world today. In short, many aspects of gender are
socially constructed, particularly with regard to
gender expression.

gender as young children directly influences how we view
the world today. In short, many aspects of gender are
socially constructed, particularly with regard to gender
expression.
Like other social constructs, gender is closely monitored
and reinforced by society. Practically everything in society
is assigned a gendertoys, colors, clothes and behaviors,
are just some of the more obvious examples. Through
a combination of social conditioning and personal
preferences, by the age of three most children prefer
activities and exhibit behaviors typically associated with
their sex.

BE.

Socially accepted gender roles and expectations are

so entrenched in our culture that most people cannot
imagine it any other way. As a result, individuals fitting
neatly into these expectations rarely, if ever, question
what gender really means. They have never had to,
because the system has worked for them.
Perhaps the most fundamental aspect of a persons
identity, gender deeply influences every part of ones life.
In a society where this crucial aspect of self has been so
narrowly defined and rigidly enforced, individuals who
exists outside its norms face innumerable challenges.
Even those who vary only slightly from the norm can
become targets of disapproval. Yet, this does not have
to be the case forever. Through consideration of the
uniqueness and validity of every persons experiences of
the self, we can develop greater acceptance for all. Not
only will this create greater inclusion for individuals who
challenge the norms of gender, it will actually create
space for all individuals to fully explore and celebrate
who they are.
The term gender fluidity has been chosen as an
umbrella classification to encompass all realms of
non hetero-normative, gender variant identity. This
classification therefore acts as a convenient terminology,
inclusive of all gender identity that sits outside of
traditional paradigmal expressions of binary gender.
With a narrow definition of what it means to be male and
female, gender fluidity may be a reflection of repeated
violation of the preset division of the traits, by sex.
A time where gender is being questioned by its very
core meaning, fashion is suddenly being given new
life. Designers, models and everyone else seems to
be revolting against roles, and subverting norms. A
sea of designers have recently opened their runway
gates to gender fluidity, what with Gucci sending down
male models in pussybow blouses, and Prada subtly
putting forward their neo-unisex ideals in the seasons
collection. The emergence of unisex clothing has brought
about increasing societal awareness and acceptance
of LGBTQ rights. Celebrities like Caitlyn Jenner and
Laverne Cox have helped bring in trans-acceptance, and
blend the traditional norms of masculine and feminine.
Transgender models like Andreja Peji`c and Hari Nef
have also been seen frequenting runways and gracing ad
campaigns, suggesting a gradual but definite change in
the way fashion portrays sexuality and gender identity.
Breaking down the heirarchies that support patriarchy,
this new generation of thought is questioning what it
MODEL SHWETA KHADE
really takes to be a man, woman, or more.

INTERVIEW
BYTES

BE.

74

BE. : Its an honor to speak with you, Mr. Rodricks. Thank

you so much for finding the time to do this, its very kind
of you.
WR : Oh no problem at all, glad to be of help.
BE. : Are you aware of gender fluidity in the fashion
industry today?
WR : As far as I am concerned, in India there has always
been gender fluidity. This is a Western invention. In India,
men have worn jewelry of all forms, draped a dhoti like
a woman would do a navari sari, worn the same shawls,
brocades and silk kurtas as women, carried off the same
footwear and carried accessories in a gender fluid style.
BE. : How would you describe the shift towards this
gender neutral and fluid style?
WR : I make clothes that can be worn by both sexes. A
womans tunic and a mans kurta are interchangeable. So
are our chudidaars, pyjamas and headwear. So technically,
there has always been movement towards fluidity, but
awareness is rising.
BE. : Is gender fluid fashion a step towards gender
equality or empowerment?
WR : A problem for the West. If men there cannot wear
skirts, it truly is their rigid boxing of gender. That said,
women wear jackets and trousers. So they have a degree
of gender fluidity as well. Whereas in India, we need to
focus on acceptance more.
BE. : Do you believe gender fluid fashion will affect the
Indian fashion industry the same way as it has in the
west?
WR : Not at all. East is East and West is West. Let us
incorporate our ethnic styles into our own interpretations
of fluidity. That being said, there is a general movement
towards gender neutral dressing, especially in our youth.

Designer, mentor, Padma Sri

awardee (2014 ) and dog lover,
Wendell Rodricks opens
up to BE. about his work, his
views, and his admiration for our
country. With a resonating love
for the minimal and timeless,
he is exactly what he seems
warm, welcoming, and fearlessly
simple.

BE. : Would you like to see a gender fluid fashion oriented

magazine in our markets? What are your views on such a
magazine?
WR : Why not, it is an area that has not been explored
much. My view is about style. I dont care about gender,
this is an alien word with no literal translation in Indian
languages. We are Indian and should be proud of our 6000
year old clothing legacy. All the best!

BE.

75

BE. : Are you aware of gender fluidity in the

fashion industry today?
PB : Yes. Gender fluidity has existed for centuries.
Cultures like the Native North American tribes
actually accept 5 genders in their cultures! In
fashion, it has existed since the time of the
Romans, and many cultures accept this as
normal.
BE. : How would you describe the shift towards
this gender neutral and fluid style?
PB : Modern society has long accepted gender
fluidity as a fashion statement. The Japanese
design movement that included Issey Miyake &
Rei Kawakubo created unisex garments that were
popular and accepted. Modern Western society
is more rigid and allots gender specific roles to
wardrobes.
BE. : Is gender fluid fashion a step towards
gender equality or empowerment?

Fashion guru and style aficionado,

Prasad BIdapa talks to BE. about
his world views, aesthetics, fashion
history and more.

PB : I think that gender equality is still struggling

with a whole lot of issues that have nothing to do
with fashion. Fashion does help highlight some of
the struggles, and gives it artistic expression.
BE. : Do you believe gender fluid fashion will
affect the Indian fashion industry the same way
as it has in the west?
PB : Indian draped styles like the sari and dhoti
resemble each other. The Kurta is also pretty
unisex. Today Indian grooms are as elaborately
dressed as their brides. Some designers embrace
the concept, it is a creative niche.
BE. : Would you like to see a gender fluid fashion
oriented magazine in our markets? What are
your views on such a magazine?
PB : I think existing fashion magazines could
do more to feature these styles of dressing, a
fashion magazine devoted entirely to gender
fluidity is an interesting concept, it should be able
to sustain itself.

BE.

76

BE. : Are you aware of gender fluidity in the

fashion industry today?
KP : Yes. While I am still a rookie, I am aware
that gender isnt quite a criteria in fashion today.
BE. : How would you describe the shift towards
this gender neutral and fluid style?
KP : A much needed one. To me, fashion is art
and a form of expression - untangling it from
gender norms can only help people express
themselves better.
BE. : Is gender fluid fashion a step towards
gender equality or empowerment?
KP : Yes, it most definitely is.
BE. : Do you believe gender fluid fashion will
affect the Indian fashion industry the same way
as it has in the west?
KP : Yes, of course. Everything is interconnected
in todays world.
BE. : Would you like to see a gender fluid
fashion oriented magazine in our markets?
What are your views on such a magazine?
KP : Id love to see one. I think our fashion
industry still plays rather safe understandably,
I know. But the only religion of fashion should be
Expression and a gender fluid magazine is A
beautiful way to show the industry the power of
fashion thats free to Express!
