Introduction
Calenberg Ingenieure have developed a sliding bearing which has proved its suitability for more than twenty
years in practical applications. This
bearing is named Ciparall and is
registered under the Trademark as
Ciparall.
Ciparall Sliding Bearings are designed and engineered for high load,
low coefficient of friction applications. They should not be compared
to multi-layer thermo-plastic thin
sliding sheets or coated laminated
elastomer plates and similar. These
alternatives to the Ciparall Sliding
Bearings have shown questionable
behaviour in practical applications
and conditions over the years
(Bibliography 1 & 2).
For Ciparall Sliding Bearings the
functional characteristics are calculable and the functional data of the
bearings is the result of research and
development and may be used for
static calculations with confidence.
Extensive official approval, experts
opinion, conformation to DIN Standards and proven long-term functional ability, is your guarantee for a
reliable working product when using
Ciparall Sliding Bearings.

Description
Calenberg Ciparall Bearing is a
combined sliding and compression
bearing. The bearings sliding ability
is independent of its compressive
performance (picture 1):

Angular distortions and load

adjustment are accommodated
by durable elastic compression
layers.
Cross tensile forces, unevenness of
the support area and long term
creep deformation are not transmitted into the sliding layer. The format
stable sliding area remains even and
parallel, the sliding characteristics
are maintained. These are the criteria
for functional ability and safety.
Calenberg Ciparall Bearings are
produced in two standard types
(picture 2):
Ciparall Sliding Bearing, GRP
(glass reinforced plastic)
Ciparall Sliding Bearing, ST
(steel reinforced)
The dimensions of the GRP sliding
plate are determined in length and
width by the expected movements in
these directions (picture 5).

Functional
characteristics

Elastic bearing deformation and

sliding movement do not influence
each other.
Mounting, manufacturing and contact area differences are equalised
resiliently in the elastomer section.
Point and strip loads are not
transmitted to the sliding area.
The sliding area remains even and
format stable.
Friction values: The sliding characteristics are proven in regard to
the long life of a building under
centric and eccentric loading. The
results are shown in picture 3.

High permissible vertical load.

Simple mounting, no special

finishing required.

Materials
Weather and ageing resistant materials are used for Ciparall Sliding
Bearings:

The elastomer is made from a

synthetic material called chloroprene (chemical short sign CR)
according to Guidelines of the
German Institute of Building
Technique, Berlin.
Glass reinforced plastic (GRP)
according to K-quality sign
(RAL), glass fibre polyester plates.

Polytetrafluoro-ethylene (chemical
short sign PTFE).

Weather resistant steel WTSt

52-3 according to the Guidelines
for a Delivery, treatment and
Application of weather resistant
structural steels fulfilling the
demands of DIN 17100.

Application and
Areas of Suitability
Calenberg Ciparall Sliding Bearings
should be considered necessary in
any building construction where high
movement parallel to the supporting
area for the stressed building parts
are to be expected.
Suitable applications for a single
bearing in rigid building components,
for example:

in the area of expansion joints

Swimming pools, liquid retaining

structures, silos, beams

Pre-cast concrete

In situ concrete

steel and timber construction

Fire Resistance
Properties
The fire resistance properties of
Ciparall Sliding Bearings have been
officially proven under high load and
practical mounting conditions.
Due to this test and expert opinion
the Ciparall Sliding Bearing can be
classified in fire resistance class
F90 and F120 according to DIN
4102 part 2, edition 1977.
Additional fire protection precautions
are not necessary if the minimum
dimensions of the bearing fulfil the
demands of the Fire Protection
Table (Brandschutztechnische
Beurteilung) No. 3799/3757-AR.

In most cases the calculated

2. Bearing Calculation
Calculation of the bearing according
to DIN 4141 part 3. The following
points should be considered:

The ground area dimensions

of the elastomer bearing (AE)
have to be at least 2 cm
smaller than the contact area
dimension of the supported
building members (AA).
For steel reinforced concrete
members the reinforcement has
to be within the bearing area.
Chamfer size.

The maximum ground area of the

Calenberg Ciparall Sliding Bearings
are produced and delivered made
to measure in location numbered
bearing sizes.
Bearing thickness:
Ciparall Sliding Bearing,
GRP: 14 mm
Ciparall Sliding Bearing,
ST: 11, 20, 30, 40 mm

max. AE = l x b = 230 x 130 mm

When placing the bearing in

in-situ works care must be taken
to see that any moving part of the
bearing is not concreted in or
restricted by concrete overspill
etc.

Please Note:

Directions for
Bearing Installation
In precast concrete construction the
Ciparall Sliding Bearing is placed
in its location without any special
precautions in the middle of the
supporting area with the bearing
body at the bottom and the GRP
plate facing upwards.
For reinforced concrete the edge
distance a r to the outer edge of the
building part should be at least
2 cm. The bearing ground area must
be within the reinforced area of the
concrete. Chamfered building part
dimensions must be considered for
the determination of the edge
distance (see picture 5).
