CONFLICT
Man vs Society
The first conflict that presented in the story is when Ivan stops for a short
break, and suddenly an officer with two soldiers appear and interrogate with
him about the merchant who was found with his throat cut.
Man vs Man
Ivan confronts with the authority again while they discover a secret tunnel
made for eloping. The Governor interrogates with Ivan to tell his knowledge
truthfully about the tunnel. Since Ivan knows the truth about the tunnel, as
he found Makar digging it at the middle of the night, he had been threatened
to be killed by Makar if he says a word about it.

Man vs. Society - for judging Aksenovs innocence.

CLIMAX
After 26 years, he met Makar, the real murderer, who reveals the truth.
RESOLUTION
Makar realized his mistake, and he confessed of killing the merchant and
putting the knife inside Aksenovs bag, and he asked him for forgiveness.
When the order for Aksenov release came, he was already dead.
CONCLUSION
Makar feels extremely guilty and cannot bare to look at Aksenov, so he
confesses he is the one whom killed the merchant twety-six years ago, but
when Aksenovs release day came, he was already dead.

MORAL VALUES OF THE STORY

God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers.


Never doubt in the dark what God has shown in the light.
When people let you down, God will pick you up.
Be patient, faithful and trust Gods plan.
Truth will set you free
Revenge is never a key for success, but forgiveness

SYMBOLISM
The death of Aksenov symbolizes his own freedom, because as a prisoner
there are only two ways to have your freedom. First is to have Pardon by the
court or through your death. By his death Aksenovfree hiss soul in the arm of
our Lord God his peaceful place can make us see and tell the real freedom.

LITERARY TECHNIQUES
Leo Tolstoys God Sees the Truth but Waits, expresses tragic misfortune as his
foreshadowing technique to tell what happen to Aksenov
Tolstoy relayed an incident at the start of the story where Aksenovs wife had
a bad dream. That his hair was quite grey at the time he returned from the

town. At the moment, Tolstoy gave us a hint of what will happen to Aksenov
with his journey.
LITERARY APPROACHES

STRUCTURALISM
-which describes the good and the bad, where in the good is Aksenov and the
bad is Semyonich. The killer is Semyonich but still he let other suffer for his
crime and Aksenov which is the protagonist in the story suffered 26 years in
prisonment because of the crime he never commited.

SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE
-it discuss two social lives. The life of a merchant, which is rich and dealing
with many people. And the life of a prisoner who had different reasons why
they were inside the prison.

FORMALISM
-which discusses the plot of the story, from the setting which is Russian
settings, and the chronological event of the story, the day Aksenov went to
Nizhni, being captured by the policemen, 26 years in prisonment, and until he
met Semyonich the true killer of the merchant, until the ending of Aksenov

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

After writing War and Peace and Anna Karenina, Tolstoy
underwent a change of religious and philosophical attitude.
Influenced by Buddhism and Jesus Christs Sermon on the
Mount he developed a pacifist / anarchist philosophy; he
became supportive of civil disobedience to improve the welfare
of the oppressed. He noted his attitudes in The Kingdom of
Heaven is within you and Confessions.
