Janet Kan
TBLT
Includes 2 CDs
This book was developed in 3 sections. The first section, Listening Skills, focuses on multi-purpose
listening exercises. They require time and repetition. The skills that are developed can then be applied
in the various contexts of the second section of the book. The listening exercises include letters of the
alphabet, numbers, names, license plates, postal codes, phones numbers, addresses, maps, messages,
one-sided phone messages & dictations.
The second section, Reading & Writing, incorporates the use of the skills from section 1, but focuses
largely on reading and writing in specific contexts, although there are suggestions for some oral applications to those contexts as well. The reading & writing section includes Invitations, dates, times, answering an invitation (accepting and refusing), notes, telephone messages, letters, addressing envelopes,
forms, and greeting cards (phrases and symbols).
The third section, Assessment, contains 13 assessment sheets. Great for PBLA binders.
The author also includes an 8 week outline on how to use the lessons.

Sophie Wang
Learning to decode on the letter-level is an inevitable process for a student to become a successful
reader, but many phonics books are either designed for children or for illiterate adult native speakers,
not for adult ESL students. Sophie Wang was inspired by her adult ESL students to develop phonics
materials for ESL learners with practical, useful content for everyday English. This is an important
distinction; the vocabulary which interests adult ESL learners is different from early education students
because of their needs and motivation. A five-year old may be interested in learning pony, but an adult
ESL driver may eagerly want to learn Private Parking - especially if they have been ticketed or towed!
Sophies 175 page book covers 10 LINC themes of interest to adult ESL students.

A basic presentation of the eight parts of speech and their functions in English sentences.
The suffixes/prefixes are introduced.
The first page of the lesson is filled out together as a class.
A matching activity provides further introduction to the suffixes and prefixes.
A list of common words that contain the suffix/prefix is discussed as a class.
Sentence Practice A. In the cloze activity students choose words from the Word Bank, alter them
and complete the sentences.
Sentence Practice B gives students a structured opportunity to change an underlined word to a new
word with the suffix/prefix and make an altered sentence e.g., Sam bakes pies and cakes. / Sam is
a baker. The words to be changed are underlined in Part B of each practice.
Sentence Practice C is the same as B but the students are asked to determine on their own which
words to change. All of the words to be changed are included in the list found on the second
page of the lesson, so students will always be able to refer to the list to see which words in the
practice sentences can be combined with the suffix/prefix.
Unit Review - Sentence Practice Quiz: Students are presented with sentences from the previous
sentence exercises and they are required to change a word to a new word with the suffix/prefix and
make an altered sentence.
Unit Review - Four In A Row: Students attempt to place four consecutive markers in any direction on
the board by giving correct sentences using the words given with a Unit suffix or prefix.
Unit Review - Dominoes: Root word and suffix/prefix pieces are paired to make a word. Students
can begin with 5 dominoes and take turns constructing some sort of shape (circle, rectangle, house,
car) by forming correctly spelled words
Unit Review - A Board Game: Players move around the board by making new words that contain a
suffix/prefix joined to the word on the card that has been drawn. Depending on the degree of
difficulty desired, players can be asked to spell the new word. They can also be asked to use the
word in a sentence.

Time and Tide invites the students to share in the personal experiences of two immigrants, Pat and
George, who left their native country, Scotland, to go their separate ways, one to Canada, the other to

an experienced ESL teacher for thirty years, has put it all together in Time and Tide. This book offers a

Students play in groups. The question cards are placed in the centre of the group. Each student gets a
set of answer cards, True and False, and a set of betting cards, 10 and 20. A student draws a question
card and reads the statement on the card filling in the name of the person on their right. For example,
Maria likes coffee. The possible answers are, True or False. The other students guess what Marias
answer will be, True or False, by placing an answer card facedown. They then bet. 10 or 20, by placing
a betting card facedown. Maria says, Ask me? The student who drew the card asks Maria, Do you
like coffee? Maria reveals her answer and points are awarded. Repeat.

How to Play
Divide the students into groups of 312. Each player needs a set of answer cards (A, B, C) and betting
cards (5, 10, 20). Each player starts with 50 points. The question cards are placed in the middle of the
group. The first student draws a question card. The students ask the question about the student on their
right, for example Maria. The card states the question and three possible answers. For example, What
is Marias favourite meal of the day? A. Dinner. B. Lunch. C. Breakfast. Each student guesses what
Marias answer will be by placing an A, B, or C facedown and place bets by placing a 5, 10, or 20 betting
card facedown. Maria reveals her answer and then the other students reveal their cards. Points are
awarded. Repeat with a new student drawing a question card.

Pat Dyck
This book is for students who are reading sentences and ready to move on to stories. Each of the sixteen uplifting, high-interest stories in this book are 100-150 words long and written in about 20 short
simple sentences. The author found her students could read simple sentences but were intimidated by
the paragraph form of news stories. She presents each story first in a comic strip form - pictures with key
nouns and verbs. The second version of each story is in an easy-to-read sentence-by-sentence format,
i.e., each sentence is on its own line. Later in each unit your students will read the story in paragraph
form. This technique is called scaffolding, the students is successfully eased into paragraph reading,
and it works .There are a wide variety of readytophotocopy exercises to reinforce new vocabulary and
ideas. The exercises:
comprehension
true or false
pronunciation tips
short answers
sentence completion
corrections
negative sentences
verbs tenses
plurals with es
