Although they are an inexpensive supplier of vitamin, mineral, and high-quality protein, eggs also
contain a high level of cholesterol, one of the major cause of heart disease. One egg yolk, in fact,
contains a little more than two-thirds of the suggested daily cholesterol limit. This knowledge has
caused egg sales to drop abruptly in recent years, which in turn has brought about the development of
several alternatives to eating regular eggs. One alternative is to eat substitute eggs. These eggs
substitutes are not really eggs, but they look somewhat like eggs when they are cooked. They have the
advantage of having lower cholesterol rates, and they can be scrambled or used in baking. One
disadvantage, however, is that they are not good for frying, poaching, or boiling. A second alternative
to regular eggs is a new type of eggs, sometimes called designer eggs. These eggs are produced by hens
that are fed low-fat diets consisting of ingredient such as canola oil, flax, and rice bran. In spite of their
diets, however, these hens produce eggs that contain the same amount of cholesterol as regular eggs.
Yet, the producers of these eggs claim that eating their eggs will not raise the blood cholesterol in
humans.
Egg producers claim that their pproduct has been portrayed unfairly. They cite scientific studies to
back up their claim. And, in fact, studies on the relationship between eggs and human cholesterol
levels have brought mixed results. It may be that it is not the type of eggs that is the main determinant
of cholesterol but the person who is eating the eggs. Some people may be more sensitive tocholesterol
derived from food than other people. In fact, there is evidence that certain dietary fast stimulate the
bodys production of blood cholesterol. Consequently, while it still makes sense to limit ones intake
of eggs, even designer eggs, it seems that doing this without regulating dietary fat will probably not
help reduce the blood cholesterol level.

EGYPT
The climate of Egypt is mainly hot and dry. Apart from the Valley of the River Nil, which runs
throught the country from south to north, it consists entirely of desert. In the summer, the
temperature often reaches 45 degrees Celcius in the south of the country, and 30 degrees Celcius in
the north. In winter, the weather is cooler, and along the north coast it is often cloudy, with
occasional rain. In Cairo it rains on average for three days in a year, and in the south of Egypt rain
is almost unknown. There are often gentle breezes from the north throught the year, except during
March and April, when a hot, dusty wind blows from the south.

Some of the most worlds finest roads make use of bodies of water. They are called canals.
Canals are man made waterways. They are usually straight and narrow. But they are filled with
water. They connect rivers and lakes, oceans so that boats and ships can go from one to the other.
Most canals are used for transportation. Barges, boats, and ships carry goods over canals. Some
are used also reduce the cost of shopping goods and offer travel short cuts.
Canals even go over hills and mountains. But you know that water cant flow up a hill; so how can
the water and boats in a canal go up a hill?
Something called a lock is used. It is a giant tank. The tank is big enough to hold a long boat. The
boat floats into the tank, and the doors behind it are closed to lock the boat. The boat floats into the
tank, and the doors behind it are closed to lock the boat in there. Then more water is let into the tank.
When the tank is full of water is let into the tank. When the tank is full of water, the tank door in front

of the boat is opened and the boat floats out. The boat floats higher and higher part of the water rises. It
floats either out into a higher part of the canal or into another tank or lock, which will lift it still higher.
To go down the hill on the other side, the boat enters a lock that is full of water. As the water is let
out, the boat will float lower and lower. So locks make it possible for boats or ships to move from one
water level to another.

A mangrove is a tropical marine tree or shrub of the genus Rhizopora. Mangroves have special
aerial roots and salt-filtering tap roots that enable them to thrive in brackish water (brackish water is
salty, but not as salty as sea water).
There are several species of mangrove trees found all like to be very close to a large fresh water
source (such as a river). Some species have roots covered with sea water everyday during high tide.
Other species grow on dry land, but are still part of the ecosystem.
Mangroves need to keep their trunk and leaves above the surface of the water. Yet they also need to
be firmly attached to the ground so they are not moved by waves. There are three types of mangrove
roots that play an important role for it:

effects. For example, pesticide put inside particle board to prevent termites has now been found to
be toxic to human life.
Technology does not always bring good effects; for example, computers do much work faster
than man, but then man loses his job to a machine. Because no man can guarantee that technology
will have only good effects and will be used only for the benefit of man, we should delay the
continued development of technology.
The writers purpose in writing this paragraph is
a. To make people implement advanced technology
b. To describe pollution caused by advanced technology
c. To explain what further inventions in technology
d. To explain what further inventions in technology should be made
e. To show how advantageous advanced technology is for human beings
46. Advanced technology has made peoples lives more comfortable; nevertheless
a. It is useful and beneficial to people
b. Many people are no longer unemployed
c. It help people to kill termites through pesticides
d. It is causing a lot of damage to the environment
e. Many inventions were developed for good causes

Gene Splicing
Genetic research has produced both exciting and frightening possibilities. Scientists are now
able to create new forms of life in the laboratory due to the development of gene splicing.
One the one hand, the ability to create life in the laboratory could greatly benefit mankind. For
example, sources, scientists have developed a method to manufacture it inexpensively in the
laboratory.
Another beneficial application of gene splicing is in agriculture. Scientists foresee the day when
new plants will be devoleped using nitrogen from the air instead from fertilizer. Therefore food
production could be developed to feed the worlds hungry people.
Not everyone is excited about gene splicing, however. Some people feel that it could have
terrible consequences. A laboratory accident, for example, might cause an epidemic of an unknown
disease that could wipe out humanity.
As a result of this controversy, the government as made rules to control genetic experiments.
While some members of the scientific community feel that these rules ae so strict, many other
people feel that they are still not strict enough.
