1. As indicated in "Sketch No. 2," the Ando Detachment will

make surprise landings; one unit ill land on the shores north of
Tape, and the main force at Patani; both of these units wTill oc-
cupy the two enrerru airfields. Vithout waiting for the completion
of the landing, the main force -".ill commence its maneuvers, and
with one blow wTill penetrate the boundary. of Thailand and Malaya.
While penetrating or crushing the enemy it will immediately
capture Ipo in a blitzkrieg move by passing Gurik and Kuala Kansar,
and will ensure the occupation of the fording point on the Polak
river and also the airfield there. Ti'ogethr bwith facilitating the
operations of the main force of the division, the Ando Detachment
will prepare for the advance towards Singapore.

2, From the 17th of Novemlber, the 5th Division will success-

ively embark at Shanghai, and will stop in Canton Wand at the at
entrance to t .e harbor, it w-vill load on units directly attached
to the army, and on t~hle 27th will assemble at the assembly point
of Milia.. There, they wril receive traiin g in the changing of
ships, etc, and at 0700, h-th of December, they will depart from
this. point and proceed towards the .landing point.

3. The company wiil become the unloading operations unit in

the Patani area, and its comu.osition is as strated in Attached
Chart No. 1.

CHAPTER 2 METEOROLOGICAL CONDIIOINS, TEEP I l ATD CC0NTDITION OF INHABITED

AREAS ERTMICH HAVE I JFLE TCED THIN OPERATIONS

A. Meteorological Conditions

1. Eind and aves

On the ea coast of Malaya, there is a strong northeast
monsoon -ind from November to March (ind velocity--over 10 meters),
but although there is generally a strong northeast monsoon wind
during the day, it becomes an east rind during the night (from around
10 PMJt until the daun of the f ol1lowY;ing, and becomes comparatively

- )iiiJ
..
mow.
more gentle. The effect of hLie
northeast monsoon is very great
upon the ''s'aves, and although there, is a difference according to
the place, it is generally. at its wrorst during the latfter part
of December and in january. Thsere are frequently times when it
becomes impossible to unload supplies*.
Because the easten shore is as a whole very shoaly, .the seas
that are not sheltered are visited by tidal waves and strong
swells during the monsoon season and the breakers become very big;
one and' one-half meters' to two and a half meters in height, the
wave length from 15 to 20 meters, and it becomes very dangerous
for shins, However, if it tlhanges to an east wind
the waves subside somewlhat and become long. swells'

A. in the previous paragraph, even when there is no set season

for the changes in the winds and raves,' if tthe height of the waves
generally exceed 2 meters, the unloading of supplies becomes very
difficult. The peculiarity 'of the waves in this: rea is their
short wave length,. 4which brings about' unexpected difficulties for
ships..

The gale from the northeast was strong the day before the landing
at dusk. There was. a .li ght rain coupled with, an east wind but
the wind calmed doim, Even though it idn t to le long to launch
the ships, it weras necessary to, take a^ considerable 'amount of time
to change fromi the transports to, the small craft. The delay. was
due to the fact that the transports had to cut through high seas
in the. same direction .as the current though the, swells were coming
from the east.

2Weather and Temperature

During the 'northeast monsoon season (o6v-March) ; there
was a great ai~ount -qf rain, days w,ithout any, rain being few.
Before and after the landing there ere showers every day' and
because there were hardly any, days "rhen 'the weather cleared,
was comparatively moderate.
tre.. temperature It was very advanta-
geous for the execution of the operation.

B. Terrain

1 Conditio of the shoreline0

Tfhe.shoreline in. the. vicinity,, of f'atani is shoaly.. The
present anchorage is at a position of over 6 Thiles offshore,- The
unloading point of supplies end automobiles is 7 miles up the Patani
river. 4?or a single round trig, over 2 hours is necessary. And
if too much time is spent in loading and unloading, passage will
be impossible- through the north of the river except at high tide.
The condition of the shoreline is as indicated in Military Sketch
No. 3.

As mentioned above, the presesnt landing point is of a peculiar

terrain, and if shallowr draf t transports and Qther ships are not
utilized, it would be r o produce any degree of

.. 3-
effectiveness 0

2. In the vicinty= &f P at.ni: the terrain is generally low

aithout any good landmarks and. with numerous beaches and swrramos.
During the rainy season, it is very disadvantageous for tactical
maneuvers, and at times, the only road between Patani and Yara
which is the route of advance for the DetachZment is inundated.

3, The situation as mentioned before dien compiled and ccn-

densed is as 'follos:

a, The unloading point of men and horses is in the area

west of Rusumnire.
However, until the road is reached, the swampy terrain only
permits the advance of perzsonnel and horses,

b. Gun-carriages, and au-tomabiles in the vicinity of the

Customs' Pier on the right bank of the mouth, of the Patani
river (only at high tide) For this reason, it is necessary
to construct a pier which wil be able to handle supolies
even at }ow~ tide.
tc.
Unit eipient on both shores of the
river below
the bridge in Patani (at high tide only).

C,. Condition of Inhabited Areas

For the greater nart, the structures are of. wood. and the
foundations are high; therefore, they are not suitable for strong-
points or for billeting. Those buildings trhmic1h can be used are the
high school, theatre, and government buildings.

They are. easily set on fire by incendiaries. The, are of 2 stories

ith basements which have no i alls Some of the basements are used
as storerooms because thoy are protected from the heat, The ater is
bad and the salt content is very high, and. if it -is notpurified by
filtering and by boiling it is impossible to drink. There are pools
of stagnant water ever vwhere and they arc very foul. Howrever, the in-
habitants have fait,h in us and express their good-ill.

The majority of the inhabitants arc in equal. proporton s Thailaders

and Chinese imiL ,rants. anti - a anese Chinese immigrants
have fled,

D. According to Unit Order No. 5102 (?) of*the Separate Sheet
No. 2 Muranaka Tactical Orders (B-N'To . 13). The main force of the
company carried out the changing of ships, (after arrival of same) from
1000 to 1500 of the 30-th.

Upon request of an higher achelon, a portion of the company on the gun-

wales of each transport will take 'charge of the landing torpedo flo-
tilla. They will also make corrections and changes while training the
men in changing ships.

B, From 1500, 1 December, the co nrpany co miander went aboard the

iigashiyama iiaru and received from the Detachimnt co~ ander, the Ando
Detachment Orders as well asthe instructions of Army Group Co ..ander
atsui, on Separate Sheet No. 4, 5, The responsibility was very great.

F. At 2200, the same date, the company received the landing

operations unit order Separate Shc.>t No. 6 of iu.ranaka Landing Opera-
tions Orders (A-No. 23.

At the saoia tine, on approval from the commianding officers of the 2nd
and 3rd Battalions of the L2nd Infantry. Regiment, the company commander
made an agreement concerning the landing and distributed the plan of
operations of the comipan as in Separate Sheet N0o. 7 to the units
concerned for its completion and mvnde agreements upon the details of
platoons and lowwrer,

Distribution for emhbarkation of the landing units and the labor units
is as indicated in Attached List No, L0

Part 2 Training

G. As to the pre-determined matters for the period from 0800,

2 December until twro days ago, some changes and decisions wore made with
the battalion commander for the second time regarcing research, posts
of duty and distribution of boats.

H,. Because training conforming writh 'he request of the detachment

will be carried out beginning at neon, preparations will be completed
with regard to such training.

-ith the actual landing plan as a basis, the departure from 'l ia port
was made at 1630. The training of the various ship groups was utilized.
Anchor waas dropped aat 2300 5 miles off shore of Kakusei, Minaiyama,
Hainan, and, in general, it was possible to begin launching, transfer
ships, assemble, maneuver and depart within the scheduled time for the
actual landing (time of departure 0300).

The training situation is as indicated in the Attached Map No. i.

I. The results of daylight training were extremely beneficial for

the night operations and the '',, rations which depend on moon-
light tooks the same time as\ perations. There were no

4-6- IE

flaws, and it was possible to, attain conficdence in the certainty of
a successful landing.

J. At. 1400 of the 3rd, the composite trainingvwas. completed and

the units returned to Mia port.

Once again such matters as investigations, posts of duty and distri-

bution of boats were somewhat amended and gradially made definite;
and after the loading of boats wsas com-2leted by 2300, the departure
from the assembly point was awaited.

K, At 2300 of the same day the 2nd Infantry Battalion Field

Order A Part 2 on Separate Sheet No. 8 was received, and having de-
termined 8 Decenber as "'X"i day, the, detachment coimmenced military oper-
ations according to schedule from 1800 on the 3rd,

Part 3. Navigation

be maintained, Accordingly the convoy proceeded, maintaining strict ob-
servation for security.

In the afternoon, with the receipt of the naval report that
enemy airplanes were observing our miovements very closely, security
was more strictly observed.

E. 7 December.
watch maintained against enemy aircraft
}with strict and sub-
marines, entry was unde into Thai land bay. At that time heavy rain.
were added to the northeast gale and the -%raves were high. In spite of
the ocean meteorological c onditions in the vicinity of the landing
point, the wind changed to an east wind at nightfall, and furthermore
the wind subsided. Th. fact that the wwrind had practically died dowwn at'
the time of entry into the anchoragegr was indeed an act of providence.

Part. h Larnding Battles

A, At 2400 of the 7th, the convoy, without incident, entered

the anchorage and dropped anchor according to schedule. It was pitch
dark at the time of entry into the anchorage, but hy the time the
launching of the boats was completed, the forest covering the entire
landing beach was barely discernible in the din light of the moon0

The anchorage is considered to be the pre-determined location. At

2400 the launching of the convoy vessel whose launching preparation
was being silently made prior to entry into the anchorage was completed.
The infantry is again in the midst of preparation for transfer.. As
soon as the order for launching was issued at 2400, the crew of the
convoy vessel silently and in an orderly fashion executed the opera-
tions without deviating in any -:,.ay from the operations during the day-
time. At 0100 on the 8th the commencement of the transfer was ordered
and the units of the first wave.. first assembled at the location of the
respective pre-determined

and although the transfer o f t hey-'landing unit was somewhat diffic-ult,
'the operation in °enstral was completed.:by 0110,o

At 0205 the flotillas' as sem bled astern .their re.spective transports

and anxiously awaited' the signal .for :departure

B, At 0305 ,tro white lights raised on the mast head of Azurriayama

M'.Taru were extingiis he'd. 'The commanding barge ,departing from Hirokawa
h4aru passed through between Hirokawa Hdarum and -Nzumayama Hlarum leading
Na;kamoto's barge unit. After placing each individually in formation
Ath one element of -Kaneko's barge unit on the left and Yanagihara's
on",the right, the entire barge group at 03L departed,,; following. on
the rear right of the barge in charge of the whole barge group.

At the same time Oka' s barge unit and Kaneko.s barge unit de-
parted as scheduled from their slip.

C. Although it was a moonlight night we could.* not locate our land-

ing point, Rusuriru village as the entire coast 1ine was covered by
dense growth of coconut palms0 , With the report "all barge units wrrith-
out incident" the commanding barge continued forward in an approximate
direction of south 10 degrees east of half speed.

B, At 0330 at a .distance 3 miles from shore we located our land-

iZng point, and t his we reported to the 2nd Battalion coimmander. We
then gathered all the more confidence for a successful landing.

B, At 03h0 at a point 2 miles from the shore we deployed irto a

line and while at about 1000 meters 0from the enemy, e. decreased speed
and looked forward to a surprise landing:

At 0L40 all ,barges, advan cing at about a right angle against the
waters edge, a'rrived at their designated- lending point at about the
same tine.

F. The landing. units cai'ried out their landings by jumping onto

the beach in a very -hushed and silo:nt.rpanner^.

The entire unit (as-de from Kareko's barge unit) landed irithout
accident, and then shiftd into attack, pushing forward

G, With the landing of thc Battalion Headquarters, and the entire

line, as well as the departure of all the barges, the conmanding barge
left immediately, and headed toward the entranr e to the Patani River
to report to tho Regimntal conmmander that the operation was carried
out without accident to mnen or bargeso

H, The format ion of the 'landing unit and the route of navigation
are\ as in Separate Sheet No. 7 e o1.' 1.
I. At 0500 all barges returned to. their ships. The plan of
operation for each unit areas in attached 'Chart No.' 5.

Part 5. The Sur~mmar~yr of the Progress of the Past: Landing:

Operation.

A,. :Te wreather is fine, as on.the p'revious da.

Although the:.a:;va nce, of the landing unit is progressing smoothly
the unloading of reinforo n_? its., is urgent, especially motor vehicles,.
But as mentioned befor-}, the nuloading is being carried out only during
high tide, both dar' and ni ht, wrrith addit onal, round trios for the
barges. Just prior high tide
to and after the barge captain and his
entire crew would jump ,over into tbe muddy piver bottom and by man-
power force the barge through; but this action caused various break-
dowvns in the engine water cooling tube, and the barges in distress
from. tis trouble became more and mere nutmerous.

Because of this, .the platoon come ddder and ais mdiS n worked conti-
nuously day afte'r day without sleep or rest in an effort to repair
the engines, and to keep the unload , ,g.., o .)exations going ceaselessly.

a total of 5; vescels sincluding one special large craft,

'4hen this is insufficient,. have a sufficient number of inex-
perienced personnel of the sea duty company (army personnel

regard to distribution for embarkation, pi _an of debarka-

a,* istribution
'for' embarkation, will be joine.d with the
debarkation plan and it is essential that the formation during
anchorage 'be arranged so' as to be unified wit the .debarka-
tion disposition.
In the present operation.; :in most cases, the distribution
for embarkation was unified but portions,,;ofone:.unit had to
assemble from various shins and another unie had to assemble
and form its' boats in bhe dark.: Moreover, during the debarka-
tion some boat for.ation crossed each other's route during
navigation; These examples .shoeld, be :knept .i miznd. and given
.consideration for future onerations.

".In regard to the selection o. boats .(ships.)

C,. In 'regard to' the 'moveent of the comiunicatiom launches '"at the

It Is cessential that the commnunication i launches be responsible. for

communication and liaison at the assembly point by setting the time

-.ftIN
UNEO.a~y~
for communication and liaison and., by having one comlhiuca ton launch
from each vessel or by having just one communication ship control all
communication and liaison. Since coThmunications was so- busy at Mia
harbo' they sent out the motor boats one after another and as a result
the equipping of the vessels was insufficient.

D. In regard to debarkation plans.

a. In making debarkation plans for the detachment it is

essential that the independent 'engineer platoon leader first
make an estimate. There was a great deal of confusion among
the ship.s because the plans were made by the assistant trans-
port comander, In trying to forcefully execute his plans
he had large barges loaded. i th automobiles pull alongside
vessels where the cranes were in operation or he had them
pull along the side where the transferring units 'eras using
the crane,

b.. The ' plan must conform vrdth the distribution for em-
barkation, It iiil be executed so as not to break the routes
of the boat formation or the normal organization at the time
of landing.

In the present operation the Sakai raiding party consisted

of men from the Higashiyama, Kinka, and Sagami. At debarka-
tion time in order to become the first wave, the 5th company
'from the Azumayama Mfru vvas on the right and the 6th com-
pany, of the Hirokawa IvTaru on the left just the opposite from
the anchorage formation, There was difficulty. in the execu-
tion of the landing due to crossing of routes of the boat for-
mations, darkness, and waves.

E, The normal inspection of the landing points must be -thorough.

In the present -operation, according to the word of the staff

who obse rved the landing point, the mouth of the Patani river was
navigable to ships of the 150 ton IKitalt They definitely
T'class
stated this. fact but the truth is that it was navigable only a few
hours before and after high tide. Otheiwise the ships ran aground.
Due to this fact the large , landing barge v,,rith the raiding party and
automobiles aboard ran aground and spent half a day freeing itself.

F, One repair section should be attached to each company in order

to repair the boats,

In the present operation, the landing point at atani had mud and
shoals at the river mouth, For this reason, the packing of the water-
cooled engine had to work at such a great speed that a gap of 4i millimeters
was created between the piston and the cylinder. Due to the, air intake
through this gap, the water-cooled engine lost its effectiveness. Be-
cause there Tas no repair device, conditions became worse. The ship
changed course towards "Tsumubatto" and there for the first time repair
devices were available from the repair ship "Oregon'
If the debarkation work had to continue at Patani alone, the water-
U-N
- cooled enginr yr {uld'='havb':ecom nee:.uless
Therefore foi' each company -once- rrepair organizati:on is very assen-
tial and it should be,=kept: in mind especially wirhen -the unit is orking
independently on a mission.

INSTRUCTIONS

Our ,nth Division which, since departure has been consistently in

battle and which has so on remarkable firmness in the historic con-
struction of New Asia, is at present receiving greater and greater
missions and will move forward in the grand scheme of southern expansion.

Upon careful reflection, the present operation is based upon the

Imperial Divinity of the Japanese Empire; the loading-power of Asia is
to drive out of the Southwest pacific completely, the powers of the
British,. United States and Dutch, who have for many years, aggressively
scrambled and wickedly oppressed our, Asia, and also to maintain our
Southern life line.. At the same time it is a battle for the economic
liberation of the people of Asia and actually it is the greatest his-
toric undertaking of the Empire. Its m :ission is truly magnificent and
it can be said that here lies the establishment of the Imperial plan
and the fate of the Greater East Asia co-prosperity sphere.

Moreover, the troops have been selected nd mill receive their

important mission, and point toward this most crucial of areas. With
them as the core, we will advance great distances overcoming many dif-
ficulties, embellishing our military might both at home and abroad
and upholding the eternal prosperity of the throne. There is no greater
glory nor deeper sensation than this.

You are to set your thoughts deeply hero and by making all the
more efforts and exerting patriotic devotion for the manifestation of
the great spirit of Emneror Jimmu, must expect to comply with this
trust.

In order to accomplish the great historic mission of our appointed

group, byr expressing our ideas beforehand, we will clarify the points
where our beloved men are to advance.

A. Quickly and resolutely take the initiative, advance speedily

toward the objective in one action and avoid meeting ,with the enemy.
The operational objective that must be taken by the group, at present
is located at a great distance from the landing. lMoreover, before Uts there
are many natural obstacles and if we are overly careful, we mill lose
opportunities, and it is feared that the enemy will take countermeasures.
For this reason, we must demonstrate to the fullest the special
maneuverability of the group, always grasp the battle opportunity quick-
ly and resolutely, take the initiative,, penetrate obstacles and occupy
the operational objective in short time. With this of primary signi-
ficance, we must judge the various actions.

INSTRUCTIONS

When once the Grand Imperial order had been issued, the divine,
order of.Amaterasu and Jinnu were carried out, At this time, the great-
est war operation in history was started. Proper measures were immedi-
ately taken against England, America and other nations which had been
present in the Far East for a long period of time, fulfilling their
inhumjan desire to misuee individualism and capitalism without hesita-
tion. Furthermore, in rescuing the neighbor'ing nations with divine wrath
and establishing the sovereignty of Imperial Rule (Hakko Ichiyu), the
Imperial warriors who follow the rules arc filled. with loyalty and bear
in mind the old saying "Death is light or than a feather."

At present they are majestically advancing toward the south, ffith-

Ln a short time, divine wrath- wrill be inflicted upon the Allied nations
and it believed that in he very near future, the millions of people
is
of the who were enslaved will finally
Far East be enlightened by the
divine succor. Born as citizens of Japan, "Wure are proud to have been
born. as males" at this critical moment. It is indeed the honor of the
Sons of Japan to serve our leadership on this greatest of battle fronts,
and'twe will die for the Emperor wherever we go, but we will not die
futilely. "

wekiW
U1
In chasing the English and Americans back to the vicinity o& their
own coast, we will overwhelm them on the Pacific Ocean with several
hundred great warships andagain our emotions will thrill at being born
a man at this great moment. We will not give the slightest considera-
tion for our lives and it.% ill indeed be said tht we died a more than
glorious death.

The general outline that you should follow in future tactics is

first of all,. that. all men and officers, through lectures by army com-
manders and divisional commanders must be consciotis of themselves and
must overcome hardship and privations. By always relying upon the
Imperial Manuscript, and by always recalling the teachings of the higher
commanders, you must expect to display the brave and benevolent dig-
nity of the Emperor.

I, as regimental commander, have already given instrucions at

Shanghai, but I will. try to clarify the road of the soldier, according
to the wishes of the higher command.

A, We are the array of the gods and soldiers of the gods 4nd we
assist the Emperor and strive for the accomplishcent of the holy war
by loyally carrying out the 5 articles of soldiering and with self-
sacrifice overcoming various-,,obstacles by advancing against the enemy
and decimating him, yet showing, at the same tinie,, deep sympathy for
the neighbors of East Asia. We must not miitakrly commit inhuman acts
and disobey the wishes of the Emperor,

B, With aggressive daring and an indomitable spirit of endurance

we must overcome hardship and privation, whether natural or man-made
and accomplish "blitz" tactics quickly and daringly.

C. By thorough 'execution of com.mands and proper reporting and

saluting, the bond of unity will be more and more hardened into a
firmness of iron and more and more military discipline will be bui.lt
up. Whether you arein battle situations or reserve situations; you
wil unite instin ct ivey By strict exerpit _ogn, tb dfiTr e ilitary
spirit zwill be realized, and with modesty,, you will be models of the
leaders of East Asia,

D, A vigorous hi h.-sp1i i bedness

is the basis of a firm spirit
of attack. Tnasmuco as good health is the foundation of this, during
times of good health, you must always see to the' furthering of malarial
protection and prevention, Preparation of arms and material is es-
pecially important and demonstrates your sense of responsibility.
Because the two _are the basis of displaying fighti ng strength, the, offi-

1. Fifty-five men and twelve small motor barges under the com-
mand, of'Second Lieutenant Nakamoto wIrere ssembled at 0600 after com-
pleting preparations which began the previous evening. They were to
ascend the' atani ricer to Yara, aking in tow the metallic pontoons
of the Bridge Material.Company They left at 10:30, ascending the swift
river which had a 6urre exceeding four miles per hour. Furthermore,
numerous curves in the Patani river prerented operating the barges at
the desired speed, and if the crew.,complement) had not plunged into
their wtrork with determination, they all 'mightj,"have - been carried dowjn-
stre.am. At 11:00 they passed' the iron bridge (at the. point of river
crossing). Because of the activities of the crew, not a single boat
wras damaged and Tire continued upstream all night without rest or sleep.
4Je are scheduled to arrive at "-Nara" early tomorrow morning, the 1hth.

2 Hereeafter, the copanyy commander will send one small barge from-
each platoon to the ship in distress, the Azumayama Idiaruand the Asosqn
MIViaru, and these barges wrill serve as communication launches. While
waiting for the rsecond convoy to enter port, they will repair, equip
ad maaih boats' and complete unloading of the remaining war supplies
fror. the ships in distress. The above operations will be carried out
as of' today, the 13th.

3, At 0800 op1 Uooka cofiunicated with the supply depot.. The

lar ge motor barges wrere almost ail, damaged due to the shoals and the
continuous day and night unloading. Because of the extent of damage
to the water cooling enines on the boats, the crew of h6 men assisted
the supply depot repairing unit in repairing the damage.

4. At 1300 the first and second platoons sent out one small barge
each and gathered life-saving jackets in the vicinity west of' the
mouth of the ttBataniYt river; the third platoon with 4 large barges and
one small- barge tralrported fuel drums ta the vicinity of Rus-umile and
also freight to the wharf -of the custom house at the mouth of the Batani
river. At 1750 this task was completed. The crew except for labor
units, equipped the remainning boats.

5. Quartering-at 0800, 30 members of a billeting party from the

hth. platoon under the command of Master Sergeant Minaki policed the
surroundings. Furthermore, arrangements for the guard house, mess
hall, latrine and other tasks were practicaLly completed today, the 13th.

* Rations
Beginning mi"th breakfast today the entire personnel was fed
by company mess.

7. Hygiene, (ganitation)
Although the quarters are nevwly-built (private houses which
are ' quite clean) the water is poor and there is no spring water avail-
able; as a consequence the water purification apparatus borrowed from
the medical room was utilized'.
