In his request to the state

Woman finds long snake near trash Red Sox slugger immortalized in corn maze
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP)
A suburban Phoenix woman has
found a 7-foot-long boa
constructor slithering near her
trash can.
The Arizona Republic reports
that Scottsdale firefighters were
called Monday night to remove
the snake, which they say was
docile.
Department spokesman David
Folio says this is the third snake

to be found in the area. Two

albino Burmese pythons were
picked up in the same spot this
month. Folio says the
department suspects someone
may be dropping off the apparently domesticated snakes.
He says none of the three
snakes were aggressive.
The snakes were taken to the
Phoenix Herpetological Society.

Annual tomato battle leaves Spanish town awash in red pulp

By DIEGO TORRES
Associated Press

BUNOL, Spain Thousands

of people pelted each other with
tons of ripe tomatoes Wednesday,
creating a red, mushy mess in the
annual Tomatina street battle in
eastern Spain.
At the fiesta in Bunol, 160 tons
of tomatoes were offloaded from
six trucks into the crowd packing
the towns streets for the hour-long
battle that attracts many
foreigners among the around

20,000 participants.
People cheered and jumped in
the party atmosphere, with some
people wearing fancy dress but
most in T-shirts. As the trucks
pulled into the narrow streets, the
revelers chanted, Tomato!
Tomato!
To avoid injuries, revelers are
instructed to squelch the tomatoes
before throwing them. Even so,
many donned swimming goggles
to protect their eyes. People on
balconies overlooking the festivities also were pelted, and

tomatoes left red blotches on

buildings white walls.
Canadian photographer David
Trattlas said it was his 15th year at
the festival.
The last week of every August is
the best week of the year, the most
social week of the year. I cant
think of being anywhere else
except here, in this village, with

accompanied by the phrase

2 Hip Chicks to show their

stuff in Liberal, Sept. 10
By ROBERT PIERCE
Leader & Times
Southwest Kansas is known for
having a variety of shows featuring
products such as crafts, clothing
and jewelry.
Every December, Liberal hosts
SPBHs Folk Art Festival, and
nearby Plains is home to the
Wizzywig craft show that same
month.
Craft shows have even been
incorporated as part of other wellknown events such as Liberals
Yellow Brick Road Car Show and
Hugotons High Plains Music
Festival, the latter of which takes
place Sept. 10 in the Stevens
County community.
Along with the music festival the
last two years has been the High
Plains Fall Fling, and this year on
that same day, Liberal will feature
its own show at the Seward County
Activity Center.
Tulsa, Oklahomas Amanda
Johnson and Trina Gonzales are
bringing the 2 Hip Chicks
Roadshow to Liberal, and Johnson
said along with she and Gonzales,
there will be 70 vendors coming to
Seward County.
Weve got everything from
repurposed furniture, boutiques,
woodworks, junk that people are
remaking, crafts, jewelry, one of a
kind finds, she said. We go all
over Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas,
Arkansas. We do about 20 shows a
year.
The show will run from 9 a.m. to
5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the
Activity Center. Cost is $5 to get in
the door, and children 12 and

take place every hour.
Gonzales said this is just the
beginning of the fun people will see
as they discover what 2 Hip Chicks
has to offer.
We have grab bags for the first
25 people through the door, she
said. Its got some goodies in it.
Johnson and Gonzales both own
clothing boutiques in Tulsa, and
after shutting down their stores on
the weekend, they would go to
other shows. Johnson said this is
where the inspiration for 2 Hip
Chicks came from.
One day, we said, Why dont we
just have our own instead of going
and doing everybody elses show?
she said.
Johnson said she and Gonzales
have the simplest of operations.
Its still just her and I, she said.
We dont have any workers. We do
everything on our own. Its a very
small mom and pop business here.
The 2 Hip Chicks show is now in

its third year, and Johnson said its

owners have worked hard to make
it what it is today. This is the shows
first time in Liberal. Johnson said
she and Gonzales are a little
nervous, but they have a good
feeling.
We do better in smaller towns,
she said. They dont have many
things like this. The big towns are
just too much competition. Were
nervous, but were excited to
come.
The 2 Hip Chicks show features
vendors mostly from Oklahoma
and Texas, with very few locals, and
Johnson said most of the vendors
travel with she and Gonzales.
Johnson said what she believes
makes 2 Hip Chicks different is the
variety the show has to offer.
Most shows like ours are strictly
either craft or simply repurposed
furniture or vintage, she said. We
really like to try to mix it all
together. When somebody comes
through the door, theyre not neces-

sarily interested in vintage or

antique stuff. Theyre not going to
find it at one of those shows.
Instead, Johnson said 2 Hip
Chicks tries to bring a mixture of
items for shoppers.
Sometimes, we take heat from
that with people saying, Youve got
too much variety, but most people
like that idea, she said. Theres
usually something for everyone at
our shows. I really think
thats what makes us
stand out. You look
at most shows like
ours, trade shows,
they really target a
specific theme, and
we dont do that. We
dont leave anybody out.
Johnson outlined some of
the expectations and
encouragement she and
Gonzales have for their
first visit to Southwest
Kansas.
With our first time
there, theyll want to come
out and see what were
about, she said. Were
something new to town.
Hopefully, thatll get them
excited. We are also
offering any teacher, staff
that comes out and shows
their ID a dollar off on the
door money.

She looks even better when its
