Course Description: Mississippi Studies is a one semester course designed to foster

appreciation for the state, its history and its culture. The content will include the
geographic, historic, economic, political, and social events that have contributed to the
states development.
Course Text: Mckee, Jesse, Mississippi: The Magnolia State. Georgia: Clairmont Press,
2005.
Other Materials: Articles from newspapers, magazine excerpts, news footage and
documentaries, coverage and current events materials will be assigned to strengthen
students understanding of the curriculum throughout the year.
Class Materials: The following items need to be brought to class each day.
2 Inch binder (for this class only)
Binder tabs
Pen or pencil
Planner
Assignments: Written homework assignments are due every Friday and on the day of a
unit test. Work will not be recorded if it is not in order and headed appropriately. Daily
reading will also be assigned. Failure to complete reading assignments will result in
lower test scores as a selection of test questions will come directly from the assigned
reading. Additionally, assigned readings are meant to enhance the learning experience
in this class. If a student fails to read an assignment, further grasp of the topic will not
be achieved. Be sure you use every resource I have made available to you. These
resources include the class website, assigned readings, Power Point notes and web links.
Academic Dishonesty: All students are expected to conduct themselves in the most
honest fashion in class. Should a student fail to do so, the student will earn a 0 for the
assignment that was not completed honestly.
Late work: All work is due at the beginning of class. An assignment is considered late if
it is not turned in when asked. Students that must leave the classroom to retrieve
papers from elsewhere in the school will turn in a late assignment. However, exceptions
can be made if you provide me with a valid excuse for a late assignment. Late work
may be turned in for partial credit.

Tardies/Absences: If you are going to be late or absent, you must let Ms. Yoder know
before class starts by talking to her in person or sending her an email. If you are tardy to
class more than four times in a nine-week period, you will be written up to the office. If
you do not talk to Ms. Yoder before you are late or absent, all assignments due in class
that day will be marked as a 0 in the gradebook. If you are absent, it is your
responsibility to learn the information that was taught during class. Of course, please
attend office hours if you have any questions about the material.
Office Hours: Students are encouraged to take advantage of office hours, which can be
made by appointment, either before or after school. This is an opportunity to discuss
issues relating to the course, to review exams papers, or homework assignments.
