Knowledge:

Skill:

Number and Operations. The student

applies mathematical process standards to
develop and use strategies and methods
for whole number computations in order to
solve addition and subtraction problems
with efficiency and accuracy. The student is
expected to:

(A) Recall basic facts to add and subtract within

20 with automaticity

Student:

Goldfish
Papers with numbers
Red and blue linking cubes
Worksheets (3 sets)

I will provide:
Linking Cubes
Worksheets
Notecards

LESSON FRAME
We Will:

Review turn around facts with an activity

I Will:

Create my own turn around facts

ANTICIPATORY SET
I will have two different colored goldfish one color (purple) will represent the number of girls in
the class (7) the second color (orange) will represent the number of boys in the class (13). I will
put the goldfish on the document camera and we will discuss how the number of girls and guys
added together will stay the same no matter what order we add the numbers. 7+13=20,
13+7=20

Time:
4min

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY/MODELING
I will use the document camera to show the students different turn around facts as they write
them in their journal with me. We will discuss how when adding numbers they can be in any
order. 6+4-=10 and 4+6 also equals 10.

Time:
6 min

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING

I will ask the students to come to the front and hold a piece of paper with a number, the
addition sign or the equal sign. They will make an equation like 7+3= 10 and then i will have
them switch around the numbers to make the equation still equal 10. 3+7=10
This will show the students that switching the spot that the numbers are in will not change what
the equation equals.

Time:
3 min

FSGPT
(if applicable):

GUIDED PRACTICE
I will give the students blue and red linking cubes and we will make turn around facts with
them. For example 3 red cubes plus 5 blue cubes equals 8 total cubes and 5 blue cubes plus 3
red cubes still equals 8 total cubes. They will do two of these and write them in their math
journal.
FSGPT
(if applicable):

Time:
5 min

Turn to a partner and discuss the equations you chose and talk about why the numbers you
are adding can be flipped and it will not change the sum of the two numbers.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
I will provide a worksheet that has blank boxes in between the boxes there is a plus sign and
equal sign. The students will be expected to fill in the boxes with their own equations and flip
the two numbers they are adding. They will do this four times and turn in the worksheet.

Time:
8 min

(if applicable):

DIFFERENTIATION

worksheet filled out for them and

and find the sum of the two
numbers. They will have to flip the

make.

CLOSURE
I will pass out a notecard to each student and ask them to write their own turn around fact on
the notecard. The students will put their name on the notecard and turn it in. We will also
discuss why the numbers can be switched in an addition problem without changing sum.

Time:
4 min

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
I will use the notecard and their independent as the formative assessment to make sure that they understand
the content that i was teaching.
