notes

traditional
The text of the choir anthem today first appeared in its
present form in the 1928 Prayer Book of the Church of
England. The author is unknown. It likewise appeared in
the Episcopalian 1928 Book of Common Prayer. Based on
II Thessalonians 5:13-22, it is one of the grand prayers in
the Christian life. Paul is challenging followers of Christ to
live out their faith in actions toward those around them.
Note all the verbs. This choral setting is by one of the
foremost composers of church music in the last fifty years,
the Englishman, John Rutter. We have also used several
of his recordings of Christmas music in the Advent
Devotional. Here is the text in its complete form (for your
refrigerator door!) Its worth memorizing.

- Dr. Dan Sharp
Go forth into the world in peace; be of good courage;
hold fast that which is good; render to no one evil for
evil; strengthen the fainthearted; support the weak; help
the afflicted; honour everyone; love and serve the Lord,
rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit; and the blessing
of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost,
be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen.

More about Dr. Tavassoli:

In 2007, The Outreach Foundation called the Rev. Dr. Sasan
Tavassoli to serve as a missionary among Iranians in Iran
and among the Diaspora. Dr. Sasan Tavassoli is a former
Shiite Muslim from Iran. In 1985, Sasan came to faith in
Christ as the result of the ministry of a group of American
missionaries while living in Portugal. He is an ordained
minister of Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians
(ECO). Dr. Tavassoli will be joined by fellow expert Marilyn
Borst in sharing more about the church in the Middle East in
our FaithServes Forum luncheon today, at 12:15pm in room
310 of the Edington Ministry Center. Lunch is $5 per person
or $15 per family, and all are welcome to attend.
