Skill:

The primary focal areas in Grade 2 are

making comparisons within the base-10
place value system, solving problems with
addition and subtraction within 1,000, and
building foundations for multiplication.

(B) Students identify situations in which addition and

subtraction are useful to solve problems. Students
develop a variety of strategies to use efficient,
accurate, and generalizable methods to add and
subtract multi-digit whole numbers.

MATERIALS

Notecards

LESSON FRAME
We Will:

Review adding 2 digit and 3 digit numbers by drawing a picture of place value blocks to solve..

I Will:

add 2 digit and 3 digit numbers using pictures of the place value blocks to solve. .

ANTICIPATORY SET
For the anticipatory set I will draw a picture of an addition problem with one addend and a math
sentence with the answer. To solve the equation I will show the students to draw a picture of
the place value blocks.

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY/MODELING

Time:
2 mins

I will use a blank screen on the smartboard to show the students how to draw the place value
blocks and add them together. I will also write the number sentence and they will help me add
them together. We will also add a 3 digit number together to show them a little more difficult
number.
FSGPT
(if applicable):

Time:
5 mins

Can someone tell me how many tens sticks I will need to draw for ____ number?
Can someone tell me how many ones cubes I will need to draw for ____ number?
What is the answer to the equation problem?

GUIDED PRACTICE
I will ask the students to get out their math journals and draw a new HTO chart. I will roll the
place value dice and ask the students to draw the correct place value blocks and then I will roll
the dice again. The students will be expected to write the number sentence off to the side. I will
ask a student to bring their journal to the document camera so we can show what they got and
correct any mistakes made.

Time:
6 min

FSGPT
(if applicable):

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING

I will give each table different cards that have two digit or maybe three digit numbers and the
students will write the number in their journal and represent the number drawing the place
blocks. Then I will have the students switch cards with their tablemates and draw the place
value blocks to represent that number. The students will then add their two numbers and write
the number sentence for those numbers.
FSGPT
(if applicable):

Time:
6 mins

What is important when writing the equation when adding two digit numbers?

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
The students will be given a worksheet that will have their HTO chart on it with two different
two digit or three digit numbers. The instructions will tell them to draw the place value blocks
inside the HTO charts and write their own number sentence off to the side of the chart with the
answer.
FSGPT
(if applicable):

DIFFERENTIATION
Group 1

Group 2

Group 3

Time:
7 mins

The lowest group will have smaller

two digit numbers to add

The middle group will have bigger

two digit numbers to add and they
will have one three digit number to
add to a two digit number.

The high group will have big two

digit numbers and three digit
numbers. They will be asked to
add a three digit number with a
three digit number.

CLOSURE
I will give the students a notecard with two numbers on it. The students will be expected to
draw their place value blocks for each number and a number sentence with the correct answer
lined up with the correct number. The cards will have different numbers to insure the students
understand the topic.
FSGPT
(if applicable):

Time:
4 mins

Can you add the two digit numbers by drawing the place value blocks and then write the
number sentence?

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
The formative assessment will be the independent work and the closure because I can look at both to make
sure the students understand what I have taught.
