WE APPROACH GOD

Prelude ‘Little Morning Wanderer’ (Schumann Op.68)

Welcome

Lighting the Christ Candle

Jesus Christ is the light of the world.
May the flame of God’s eternal light
find a welcome in every heart.

Call to Worship (Adapted Psalm 138)

We enter into God’s sanctuary
praising God’s name
for the entire universe to hear.
We kneel at the altar in our hearts
and offer thanks for God’s unwavering love.
In our hour of need, we cry out to God.
And God answers, increasing our strength
and determination.
We will sing of the ways and the glory of the Lord.
For God’s unwavering love endures forever!

> Hymn 345 Come, Children, Join to Sing

Prayer of Approach and Confession (Unison)

Holy God, we enter your sanctuary
with reverence and expectation,
knowing you are here with us.
We long to encounter you this hour
in a new and meaningful way.
Receive our worship, we pray,
and speak to us your life-giving
and life-changing word of grace.

3
Loving and merciful God,
we confess we have not lived
honestly before the world.
We have presented a false picture
of who you really are.
Gracious God, this is often because
we do not see you clearly ourselves.
Change our hearts, O God.
Let us live lives that follow our Saviour
so the world may see you more clearly
and come to know you more dearly.
May we live only to make your name great.
Amen.

(Moment of Silent Confession)

Assurance of Forgiveness
The psalmist reminds us that the Lord is merciful, slow to
get angry and filled with unwavering love. God’s grace
means God does not deal with us according to what we
deserve. For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so great is God’s gracious love toward those who honour
God; as far as the east is from the west, so far God
removes our sin from us. Friends, this is remarkable!
Thanks be to God!

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name.
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
4
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

WE HEAR THE WORD OF GOD

A Reading from the Psalms, Psalm 34:1-3

(From The Jewish Publication Society text, a prominent
translation of the Hebrew.)
I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall
continually be in my mouth. My soul shall glory in the
Lord; the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name
together.

(From The Message Bible)

I bless God every chance I get;
my lungs expand with his praise.
I live and breathe God;
if things aren’t going well, hear this and be happy:
Join me in spreading the news;
together let’s get the word out.

This is a life-giving message from the living God.

Thanks be to God!

Clarinet Solo ‘Rustic Song’ (Schumann Op.68)

A Reading from the Letter to the Ephesians 5:18-20

(Good News Bible, The New Testament, p. 244)
This is another life-giving message from the
living God.
Thanks be to God!

Postlude ‘An Important Event’ (Schumann Op. 68)

Music Notes

Robert Schumann (1810-1856) met his future wife,

Clara when (he was eighteen and she was nine) Robert
started taking piano lessons with her father, Friederich
Wieck, one of the great teachers of the day. It was years
later when their love bloomed, but by this time the father
was dead-set against their union. It took battles in court to
finally allow the marriage of these great collaborators in
music. Pianists sometimes bemoam the difficulty of
6
Robert's music, but it was written for his wife, one of the
greatest pianists in history. This morning's music is from
the Album for the Young Op.68, written for the Schumanns'
children.
