INTRODUCTON
Study skills or study strategies are approaches applied to learning. They
was generally critical to success in school considered essential for acquiring good
grades and useful for learning through one's life." Respicias Raehumbia" in his book
"Understanding Examination techniques and effective study strategies in 2013
asserted that most students fail in examinations. Simply because the lack study skill
and or examination taking techniques.
Study skills are an array of skills which tackle the process of organizing
and taking in new information, retaining infomation or dealing with assessments.
They include mnemonics, which aid the retention of lists of information; effective
reading, concentration techniues and efficient not taking.
While often left upto the student and there support network, study
skills are increasingly taught in high school and at he university level. as a contrary to
popular beliefs studying is also a empound word made up of the two words "student"
and dying (stu-dying).
More broadly, any skill which boosts a person's ability to study and
pass exams can be termed a study skill, and this could include time management and
motivational techniques.
Study skills are describe techniques that can be learned, usually in a
short time and applied to all or most fields to study. They must there fore
distinguished from strategies that are specific to a particular field of study, example

music or technology and from abiliies inherent in the student, such as aspects of
intelligence or learning styles.
IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY
Study skills are approaches and strategies we are in learning. There are
the most important skills to master to get good grades. Having study skills not only
helps as succeed, accademically, is a will also helps us do well in life.
Without effective study skill we will become overwhelmed and
discouraged. The good news is that these skills can usually be learned in a short time
and applied to every grade level in every subject. We just to have to be persistent at
practicing and using these skills until they become second nature to us.
Some of the benefits of improved study skill are reduced else anxiety,
increased confidence, competence and self esteem. We will realize that good grades
are not always achieved through studying long hours. We can cut down on the number
of hours we study by studying efficiently through knowing how to study. Once we
learn these skills, we will be well on our way to becoming he successful student . We
have always wanted to be

DESCRIPTION OF MATERIALS
The questionnaire has 52 items on the aspects of study skills. It measures one's
organization of time, goal setting, ability to concentrate, learning methods and
obstacles of effective study. It has been formulated in English. Reliability and validity
have been established. Test Retest reliability based on a sample of '5' high school
students drawn from a Gov. Model HSS Muvattupuzha. The response to each
statement is either 'Yes' or 'No'. The questionnaire can be administered in individual
sitting or group setting.
HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY
Learning take place through experiences influencing psychological foundation
which lead differences in behaviour . There are five elements in learning which are
learner, learning, learnt, teacher and learning environment. The factors regarding the

learner compiled as level of readiness for learning, intelligence, motivation level,

interest and skills.
I thought that efficient learning depends mainly on teachers teaching method,
approaches and motivation. So that the teacher should know about his/her children.
These test help to evaluate the students. This test help to understand the following
aspects of students they are
Home environment and planning of work
Reading and note taking
Planning of subject
habits of concentration
Preparation for examination
General habits and attitude
School environment
Approaches towards learning
present position
PROCEDURE
The subject is to be seated comfortably the following insturction may given to
the subject. "This questionnaire has in statements. It is related to how you study and
the problems you may be face in studying.
" Read the statements in the questionnaire carefully and answer either 'yes' or
'No' against each statement in the appropriate column. There is no right or wrong
answers. Your answer will be kept confidential and will be used only for article
(journal).

INTERPRETATION
As per the table 4, 8 students, the are Athira, Hasina, Rehana, Fathima,
Parvathy sivan, Afiz Ali, Ajhal James, Appu Joseph, they gets the score of above 30.
Which reveals that their study skills was good. But, 2 students named sarath and
Albert who gets the score of 30 below. their study skills are not good at all. they
should improve their skills.

10

By analysing the Table 5, the study methods 8 students named Athira, Afasina,
Rehana, Fathima, parvathy, Afiz ali, Ajal James, Appu joseh etc. got more 15 more
scores There five we interpret tht their study method is very well. But 2 students
sarath and Albert Kurian got 14 and 15 ........So they should key to improve their study
methods. By analysing the second column, in class room based the students Ajal
James and Albert Kurian have less concentration comparing with others. Because
other 8 students scores more them 1. Interpreting the third column about the home
work method, Parvathy sivan and Sarath V/.A have no tendancy and practice for
doing the homework. So they should try to homework for better performacnce and
learning otherwise others are concentrate the homework. According to the resutl of the
fourth column regarding examination almost alls tudnets are very alert and
concentrates the examination. Because, their result was good. 7 students named
Hasina, Rahana, Fathima, parvathy, Afuiz ali, Ajal James, Appu Joseph etc. are got
more than 10 scores. So they got encouragements from parents and also from teachers.
So they are veyr itnerested for study.
And they are the excellent students in the Classroom. Othersie, out of the 10
students, 3 students like Athira, Sarath, Albert having less concentration computing
with others regarding examination. therefore, they need more improvement for
examination.
By analysing the table, 3 and table 4, we got the results as the total average
score is 3.4. So we can clearly inteerpret tht the average score is more than 30, so the
study skills of the students are better. By detailing, the average score for female

11

students got 35./2 and male students got 31.6 . So the study skills is more better inf
emale students rather than male students.
DISCUSSION
The study skill inventory was a psychological test to detecting the learning
behaviour and response of the pupils. The teachr and the pupil activity participated in
these test.
The study was conducted +2 class including 10 students. the study skill
questionnaire carrying 52 questions hich categorized into 4 schedules. Study method,
in class room, homework and regarding examination. the text report of the students
are discussed belo briefly.
Ajal James, he is a small boy studying in plus two comemrce class. he used to
study int he morning and evening time. His total score of the study skill is 40, so
comaring with others he is the excellent student in the class. he learn more than one
subject per day. he set a goal before studying and try to attain it. He gather all the
required materials like pen, book etc. when he start studying. he learn without any
distructions. He always study in different places and he study as soon as he open the
book. He set a time imit for studying each subjec for one work and he learns one
paragraph after another. he tries and recall the important points after reading each
paragraph. he proceeds with studies only after having clarified his doubts. he takes
adequate periods of rest during the study time. he ties to underline the important
points, he organise the points, and uptodate with the days lessons, he learn important
definition and formulates by heart. he is veyr concentrate in the class room. he used to

12

homework upto date. in examination he is a winner in excellence, because of he is

very alert about examination.
the study skills of the girls having the score more than 30. Athira K.R,
Aasina.S,m Rahana V.P, Fathima Angari, parvathy Sivan having the

score

31,35,38,34 respectively. So we can say that there students ware concentrating in a

better way for with there study method and class room, homework and regarding
examination. So they are havin th good study skills.
But the boy students like Sarath V.A and A;bert Kurian haviang the socre is
less than 30. tht 25 and 25 respectively. Their study methods are weak and they are
not keep concentration in class room while teaching and less habits in doing
homework accurately. So their study skills wants to mor improvement. But other 3
boy students haviang more than 30 scores. Afiz Ali, Ajal James, Appu Joseph
hgaviang the score 33,40,35, respectively. So we can say that their study skills are
better and good. Ajal James having very good stud skill.
CONCLUSION
Most students are not aware of the value of good study skills to their success.
Unles they are among the fortunate who have taken a study skills course not taking
and studying are at best a haphazard collectionof habits that have been developed over
time. The first thing student's must recognize is the benefit of good study habits. It can
hereby taking a few minutes of class time to encourage students to improve their study
skills and by giving them compelling resons why its worth their time and effort.
