NYSSMA Solo Festival Information

Down-County (Band, Strings, Voice, Jazz) 2017

Dear Parent/Guardian,
Your child, ___________________________________, has expressed interest in participating as a soloist in the
2017 NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) Music Festival. This year the festival will
be held at White Plains HS on April 28 & 29, 2017. Participation is voluntary, but is an excellent way
to improve musicianship skills.
In preparation for the festival, the following will be required of your child:

Regular practice on the selected solo literature as well as the required scales (for
instrumentalists only) and sight-reading.
Students should practice both independently as well as with the assistance of their
respective private teachers.

ALL registration forms and fees must be returned to your childs music teacher no later than
Friday, March 3, 2017.
Registration will include the following items:
1. NYSSMA Solo Registration Form (see attached)
2. A check to cover the registration fee as described below:
Solo Level 1-4 = $16.00
Solo Level 5 & 6 = $24.00
All-State Solos Level 6 = $30.00
Please make your nonrefundable check payable to Rye Neck UFSD.
Acoustic pianos or weighted digital pianos will be available in all Vocal (levels 1-6) and All-State
adjudication rooms ONLY. Students wishing to perform an accompanied solo must indicate an
accompanist name ON THE ATTACHED REGISTRATION FORM in order to be scheduled in a room
with a piano. CD accompaniments are also acceptable for vocal levels 1-4. Students must bring a
CD playback device if using CD accompaniment. No CD players will be provided by NYSSMA.
Students must have 2 original pieces of the music for their audition. Photocopies are not
permitted.
Students will receive their assigned playing day and time, playing permit and directions to the
audition site approximately 2 weeks prior to the festival.
Jazz Guitar and jazz bass players need to bring an amplifier to the audition. Students must also
bring a CD playback device if using CD accompaniment for jazz accompaniment or jazz
improvisation.
