Deck Replacement of

Metropolitan Avenue & Fresh Pond Road

over the L.I.R.R.
CONTRACT NO. HBQ1112

Traffic Changes

PROJECT OVERVIEW
The bridge over the L.I.R.R. at the intersection of Metropolitan Avenue and Fresh Pond Road was constructed
in 1915 by the Long Island Rail Road. It is the result of New York State ordering the removal of the grade
crossing at this location for safety reasons, since the rail tracks were at ground level. Over the course of the
bridges 101 year lifespan, it has received numerous overlays of asphalt and steel plates have been installed as
mitigation steps to remedy the deterioration of the deck of the bridge.

PROJECT SCOPE

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The work will include:

Bridge deck removal and replacement
Approach slab removal and replacement
Superstructure steel framing repairs

Successfully completing any project requires cooperation

and communication with the community and its
stakeholders.

WHAT TO EXPECT

There are two types of diversions: one for all

vehicles and one for commercial trucks and all
