The Third Sunday of Ordinary Time
Greetings of peace.

This might be a logical time to look back at 2016. Some of the things that I remember...
We had our usual good turnout on Ash Wednesday and a particularly good turnout on Easter. We
had a big crowd from out of town for the Marathon Weekend. The Haitian community showed up in
a big way for the Feast of St. Anthony in June.
In the fall we celebrated the Transitus of St. Francis, as we always do, on the evening of October 3.
At that event, we commemorate the passing of St. Francis to eternal life. This celebration gets the
annual under-the-radar award its a beautiful ceremony thats a command performance for the
friars.
Later in October we held our inaugural gala. We were happy to honor Dr. Jim OConnell of Boston
Health Care for the Homeless Program. He was the perfect honoree on a number of different levels.
Were very grateful to everyone who helped us with that very successful event.
During the week before Christmas we had our surprise lottery donation. A gentleman came in and
presented the Shrine with a winning lottery ticket, one worth $100,000. He wanted no publicity and
didnt want his name attached to the gift in any way. The donation was the talk of the town for a
couple of days. In a very good way, it seems that it stirred our collective imagination on the virtue of
generosity.
And finally, Christmas! We had a Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve for the first time in a while. It
was well attended and we were grateful to the Arch Street Band for staying to play despite being
there since the first Christmas Eve Mass at 4pm that night!
Have a blessed week.

Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children

Prayer Service for Christian Unity

Tuesday, January 24 at 7:00 pm

Father and maker of all,

you adorn all creation with splendor and beauty,
and fashion human lives in your image and likeness.

This year marks the 500 Anniversary of

the Protestant Reformation.
To that end, a special Prayer Service will
be held at the Paulist Center Chapel: 5
Park Street, Boston, MA 02108.

Awaken in every heart reverence for the work of your hands,

and renew among your people a readiness to nurture and sustain
your precious gift of life.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in
the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God forever and ever.
Amen.
