Artifact Justification:

Assessing Student
Learning
TED 690
Johnny Segovia

This is an essay that addresses and justifies the use of my artifacts to

demonstrate knowledge of the TPE domain of developing as a professional
educator.

The first artifact I chose to demonstrate my knowledge of assessing student learning was
a lesson plan that I wrote for the teacher performance assessment test that are required by the
state of California. This task included not only designing instructional strategies and Student
Activities but also planning for assessment. And a portion for planning for assessment it was
required that we also addressed to focus students and address any adaptations or modifications
that may be made for the students. I feel that this task demonstrates my knowledge of this
domain because it shows my ability to interpret the needs of students during instruction as well
as how to use Assessments in planning future instruction.
The second artifact that I chose to demonstrate my knowledge for assessing student
learning was an observation that I received from my National University support provider. This
observation was done during my student teaching and it focused on my use of a variety of
informal and formal assessments. I believe that having the ability to utilize such different
assessments, both formative and summative, is an excellent way to collect student data and
assess their progress in achieving and tendon learning goals. This observation was scored at an
applying rubric level. Applying shows that a candidate provides clear evidence demonstrating
the competency or competencies of the domain. It also demonstrates that a candidate practices
demonstrate a preponderance of appropriate, relevant, or accurate evidence. I chose this
observation because it also demonstrates my growth as an educator by utilizing different modes
of assessment.
The last artifact that I chose to demonstrate my knowledge of assessing student learning
was a literary review around the topic of assessing student learning. In this literary review, the
ideas of No Child Left Behind were addressed in regards to is it influence on high-stakes testing.
High-stakes testing is a form of assessment that was utilized with the No Child Left Behind Act.

Reaction to the high-stakes testing varies from teacher to teacher. But what this literary review
has shown me is that the teachers ultimate goal should be the retention of knowledge by their
students. The student retention level should be a reflection of the teachers abilities to make the
subject matter comprehensible to students. So essentially assessing student knowledge of the
subject matter is and should be a reflection of the Educators ability to teach the material.
