First of all you should select your preferred Language in the Sheet "Language". At the beginning the Languages German, English and
Spanish are selectable.
The designations in the Sheets are based on this Language table. To add further languages you only have to translate the designations into
your language in one of the columns (Language 4 to Language 10). To make it selectable you have to change the column heading into the
Language (e.g.: "Language 4" => "italiano").
There are a lot of cells with extensive formulas in this file. They are write-protected to ensure a longevity of the tables and to make them more
usable. Input-Fields are marked light-yellow.

The challenge in todays competitive markets is to be on the leading edge of producing high quality products at minimum costs. This can not
be done without a systematic approach and this is containded within what has been called "statistical quality control". The segment of
statistical quality control (SQC) presented here ist the process capability study. The Process capability is important because it allows one to
quantify how well a process can produce acceptable products. This study indicate if a process is capable of producing virtually all conforming
product. If the process is capable, then statistical process controls can be used to monitor the process and conventional acceptance efforts
can be reduced or eliminated entirely. This not only yields great cost savings in eliminating non-value added inspections but also eliminates
scrap, rework and increases customer satisfaction. The benefits of performing process capability studies are certainly worth the effort in the
long run.
There are 4 kinds of capability studies:
1. Machine- or Short term capability study (Used for machine acceptance tests, proceeding, pilot series)
file:///var/www/apps/conversion/tmp/scratch_4/343182563.xls
2. Preliminary process capability study (Used for machine acceptance tests, proceeding, pilot series)
3. Long term process capability study (it is realized under serial conditions)

To the Index
To produce high-quality products with low as possible dispersion at the critical parameters, its necessary to use low-dispersion machines. The
machine capability study allows to quantify how well a machine can produce acceptable products.
Procedure:
To the Index
1. Basic data
At the first step please open the sheet "MCS" (Machine-Capability-Study) and enter the basic data like "Machine-Number", "MachineName", "Part-ID-No.", "Part-Name", "Measurement attribute", the upper and lower tolerance limits ("UTL" / "LTL"), "Date" of study and
name of "Inspector".
To the Index
2. Sampling
Please take one big sample of 50 successively produced units within a short period. Bad influences on the production process should be
minimized as low as possible. Therefore it's sensible to document the boundary conditions like e.g. cutting speed, machine and room
temperature to eliminate values if necessary.
To the Index
3. Data table
After the critical parameter of all units are measured please enter the collected values into the data table.
The position (mean) and variation (standard deviation, range) figures will be calculated automatically afterwards.
4. Statistical distribution
To the Index
To the Index
The machine capability index cm indicates the machine potential performance by relating the natural machine spread (6 x standard
deviation) to the specification (tolerance) spread.
The machine capability index cmk indicates the machine actual performance by accounting for
a shift in the mean of the process toward either the upper or lower specification (tolerance) limit.
This index should be greater or equal 1,66 to quantify the machine as capable.
IV
To the Index
The preliminary process capability answers two purposes: First to analyse the process controllability by flow study. And second to estimate the
expectant long term process capability after eliminating the systematic influences occurred. With the forward study the Using of quality control
charts / SPC is beginning.
Procedure:
1. Basic data
To the Index
At the first step please open the sheet "PPCS" (Preliminary Process Capability Study) and enter the basic data like "Part-Number",
"Drawing-Number", "Measurement attribute", upper and lower tolerance (specification) limits ("UTL" / "LTL"), name of "Inspector","Survey
sample size" ( 5 units per sample) and "Number of samples" ( 20).

2. Sampling
To the Index
Please take 20 samples of 5 units at the beginning of the series production by considering all dispersion sources. For this reason the samples
should be taken periodic over a long period.
Bad influences on the production process should be minimized as low as possible. Therefore it's sensible to document the boundary
conditions like e.g. cutting speed, machine and room temperature to eliminate values if necessary.
3. Data table
To the Index
After the critical parameter of all units are measured please enter the collected values in the data table.
The position (mean) and variation (standard deviation, variance) figures will be calculated automatically afterwards.
4. Dispersion analysis
To the Index
The dispersion analysis evaluates the standard deviations of the collected values.
If there is an deviation value outside of automatic calculated control limits (UCL;LCL), this will be shown on the status-row.
(For example please see sample No. 11 in the following picture)
In this case its allowed to eliminate this sample. That is assuming that this is explainable and non-systematic e.g. material defect, chip on
instrument
Two samples at most can be eliminated. For eliminating please delete the respective sample values in the data table.
If there is no more value outside of the control limits or other conspicuity please go to the position analysis.
5. Position analysis
To the Index
The position analysis evaluates the arithmetic means of the collected sample values. Is there an mean value is outside of automatic
calculated control limits (UCL,LCL), this will be shown on the status-row. (For example please see sample No. 18 in the following picture.

To the Index
The process capability index pp indicates the process potential performance by relating the natural process spread (6 x standard deviation)
to the specification (tolerance) spread
The process capability index ppk indicates the process actual performance by accounting for a

This index should be greater or equal 1,33 to quantify the process as capable.
The automatic comment is to interpret the indices.
To the Index
The Long term process capability study is to evaluate an running process over a longer period.
Procedure:
1. Basic data

At the first step please open the sheet "PCS" (Preliminary Process Capability Study) and enter the basic data like "Part-Number", "DrawingNumber", "Measurement attribute", upper and lower tolerance (specification) limits ("UTL" / "LTL"), name of "Inspector","Survey sample
size" ( 5 units per sample) and "Number of samples" ( 40).
2. Sampling
To the Index
For a long term process capability study its necessary to take 40 samples of 5 units over a period of at least 20 production days.
Bad influences on the production process should be minimized as low as possible. Therefore it's sensible to document the boundary
conditions like e.g. cutting speed, machine and room temperature to eliminate values if necessary.
