COURSE OUTLINE

2016/2017

COURSE NAME: Design of Machine Elements

COURSE CODE: MCEN2334

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is an extension of MCEN1233 Strength of Materials. Design and analysis of pressure vessels are introduced. Design of
machine elements such as shafts, keys, pins, and bolted and welded connections are discussed. Catalog selection of rolling
contact bearings is also covered.
Course Credits: 3.00
Pre-requisites: MCEN1233, DSGN1242

Specify properties of the cross section of a column.
Distinguish different types of end connections.
Determine long or short columns.
Analyze a straight, centrally loaded column.
Design a straight, centrally loaded column.

perform basic analysis and design as related to pressure vessels.

The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
Distinguish between thin-walled and thick walled pressure vessels.
Determine hoop stress in thin-walled spheres and cylinders.
Determine longitudinal stress in thin-walled cylinders.
Determine radial, longitudinal, and hoops stress in thick-walled cylinders and spheres.
Analyze pressure vessels.
Design pressure vessels.
