The Only True Sacrifice-Perfect Use of Our Time

When Elder Zwick visited the mission, he said a number of things that truly impacted me.
One of the most important was that too often we speak of the sacrifices we had to make
to come on a mission. We talk of giving up family, friends, music, movies, free use of our
time, girlfriends/boyfriends, great food, and lovely homes. His point was that none of the
above really represents a true sacrifice because we have so many of those things or
something that substitute for them in the mission. What is a true sacrifice is completely
surrendering our will to the Savior and turning over our lives and time to Him. In other
words, real sacrifice is the perfect use of the Saviors time while we serve him. This means
that as commissioned emissaries of the Master, we will not be time wasters and we will
not be lazy or idle .
D&C 60:13 reminds us that, wherefore I give unto them a commandment, thus: Thou
shalt not idle away thy time. To be idle means that one is not working, not being
productive, wasting a lot of time, and generally being lazy. Similarly, we are told in D&C
88:12 to, .cease to be idle..cease to sleep longer than is needful. The Lord highly
values a committed productive worker who is constantly working and constantly being
productive. I remember well a Peanuts cartoon in which the final quadrant was the
punchline, Well, I didnt know we were supposed to accomplish anything, I just thought
we were supposed to be BUSY! My concern is that a few of our companionships are
either idle or just being busy doing nonproductive activities that really dont lead to
success in missionary work. The bottom line is that we simply cant afford to waste time.
Why? Because it is not our timewe gave it to the Savior when we covenanted to serve
for 18-24 months on a mission carrying His name over our hearts.
Sometimes, we waste time innocently not even realizing that what we are doing is not
productive from a missionary standpoint. During the most recent Missionary Leadership
Council (Concilio), we talked in some detail about what some of the real time wasters in
the mission are. They include such things as:
-spending too much time in members houses
-not contacting on the metro, bus, etc.
-spending too much time at ward parties, activities or sports
-poor planning and disorganization
-poorly organized pass by plans

-eating with members and having no missionary purpose

-going back to piso for mediodia when it would involve much travel
-poorly organized trips to pueblos
-not leaving piso on time in the morning or mediodia
-discussions with investigators that last 2 hours
-not proselyting the evening after Preparation Day
-staying in ward council after missionary agenda
-hanging around the Church forever after meetings
-passing by repeatedly when they are never there
The Concilio talked specifically about some of these time wasters and there was general
agreement that 1) visits to members never exceed 60 minutes and we never go just to
eat (unless it is mediodia); we always go with a missionary purpose (teach members how
to invite friends, show them the Area Plan, ask for their help in fellowshipping someone); 2)
activities at the ward are potentially real time wasters especially if there are no investigators
or menos activos there; whether it is Noche de Barrio, NDH, sports, or socialsif we dont
have an investigator or menos activos there, our visit should be limited to 60 minutes (to
show our support), after which we leave and go proselyting; if investigators are present, the
missionaries may stay the entire time 3) pass by plans should take into consideration travel
times and efficiency of effort with plans to be continuously finding during travel;
4)
missionaries should stay at Church meetings only until their investigators leave or there is a
required meeting like Consejo de Barrioa real time waster is to hang around with the
members for an hour just to chat and visit with no missionary purpose; 5) make sure your
lessons with investigators dont go way over time; teach the lesson in 45-60 minutes and
leave after prayeralways leaving them wanting more;
(6 it is appropriate for the
missionaries to leave after the missionary agenda is completed in consejo de barrio; they
should not stay in the meeting while planning for the rest of the ward/branch takes place;
(7 repeatedly passing by a name or menos activo or potential investigator when they are
never there; use your judgment, but often it would be reasonable to stop by 3-4 times and
if you can never find them, put them in the Area Book for another time;
and 8)
repeatedly returning to teach eternigators when they dont read, dont come to Church
and dont pray and are NOT progressing; individuals like that need a Lesson Z and should
be let go, placed in the Area Book, and left until they are ready to progress. We dont
have the time to waste on investigators that are not progressing at all. They are simply not
ready yet.
My prayer is that all of us will become time conscious and strive for the finest sacrifice of
allthe perfect use of the Saviors time. I have made a commitment personally to use my
time as a mission president even more wisely. I hope you will do the same. If all of us are
on the same page with perfect use of time, every companionship will baptize monthly and
there will be great growth in the Church in Spain. May the Lord bless us, each and every
companionship in the mission, that we will remember the sacred nature of our stewardship
and strive to give only the very best in the name of our Saviorwhose name we carry,
whose name crosses our lips so many times every day, and whose name we reverence
and proclaim as our Savior and the Redeemer of the world.
Con mucho amor y siendo consciente de tiempo,
Presidente Merril T Dayton

Message From Hermana Dayton

Initiative vs Idleness
Initiative is recognizing and doing what needs to be done. Initiative is required to carry
out our deepest desires, hopes and aspirations in life. Since this is the beginning of the
New Year, I thought I would focus this article on goals and taking initiative to achieve
them.
"Goals reflect the desires of our hearts and our vision of what we can accomplish.
Through goals and plans, our hopes are transformed into action. Goal setting and
planning are acts of FAITH" (PMG pg 146). I
loved what one of our missionaries said in
interviews today, Heavenly Father goes
with your plan when you make plans. We
are admonished to prayerfully set goals that
are in harmony with the Saviors admonition
to baptize all nations. We are to "do
everything within our power to achieve our
goals while respecting the agency of
others" (PMG).
The Savior asked, "What manner of men
ought ye to be?" He then answered, "Even
as I am." 3 Nephi 27:27. If we are to become
as the Savior this will require that we work
daily on mastering the character traits the
Savior exemplifies. A few missionaries
mentioned in interviews that one of their
goals is to focus on the character trait that I
write about in the El Clarn and try to
become stronger in that area each week.
As we partake of the sacrament we renew our commitment to the goal of always
remembering Him and of taking upon ourselves His name and become more like Him.
President Benson shared this, "The missionary is entitled to inspiration in choosing his
personal goals, and when he has sought the Lord in prayer and meditation, he will be
motivated best by those goals he selects himself to attain." Elder Marvin J. Ashton said
that, In setting our own goals we need to examine our own needs and abilities. The
direction in which we are moving is more important than where we are at the moment.
Goal setting should cause us to stretch as we make our way. Self-examination is an
important part of goal setting and commitment, and may be one of the most difficult
steps. In the process of self-examination, however, members should not be obsessed
with solving all their problems at one time."

In the scriptures we read, The Savior grew and increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour
with God and man." Luke 2:52. As we set our goals, we should remember to set them so we are
increasing spiritually, mentally, physically and socially...just as the Savior. Doing this provides
balance in our lives. President Monson reminds us that, "When we deal in generalities, we rarely
have success. When we deal in specifics we rarely have a failure. As we write our goals it
would be good to list specific things we can do to attain each goal. As we do the little things
we soon realize that attaining our goal is more doable. It is very important that we write down
the goal, visualize it and then put the goal in front of us each day so we can stay focused on
the goal.
In my interviews Friday, one of our missionaries told me he was creating a vision board. This is
an excellent way to keep your focus on the goals established. A vision board has pictures that
remind you of your goals. I first began doing vision boards 16 years ago and I even taught
classes on how to create a vision board. My vision board has a picture of the Savior in the
middle with the word CREATE under it. This reminds me that the Savior, my relationship with Him
and becoming like Him is most important to me. Just as the Savior created the world, I create
my world by my thoughts, words and actions. I also have a picture of the temple, reminding
me of the sacred covenants made with the Lord, a picture of my family...and grandchildren-reminding me of eternal families, a picture of missionaries, reminding me to preach the Gospel,
a picture of my personal and family mission statements...to keep my focus on those things that
are most important in my life, my parents--reminding me to care for them, a picture of
President and myself reminding me of our wonderful relationship and doing all I can to enrich
our marriage, etc. As I have a picture of myself at my ideal weight with the number of pounds
under, reminding me to exercise, eat right and stay healthy. As I view my vision board I feel
renewed energy, passion, and excitement about the life I am creating. Another missionary
shared that she writes a letter to herself, describing what she will accomplish during the year
and who she will become. She opens the letter on the last day of the year and then writes a
new letter to herself. What a fun way to set goals!
Goals help us bring about much good in the world. In the D&C 58:27 we read, Men should
be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to
pass much righteousness. I am convinced that the happiest people are those who determine
goals for themselves, write them down and then achieve them. Those who are progressing
each day have a sense of fulfillment and a happy energy about them. President Ballard said, "I
am so thoroughly convinced that if we don't set goals in our life and learn how to master the
techniques of living to reach our goals, we can reach a ripe old age and look back on our life
only to see that we reached but a small part of our full potential. When one learns to master
the principles of setting a goal, he will then be able to make a great difference in the results he
attains in this life.
President and I have so enjoyed discussing goals with you in interviews. We are impressed at
how prayerful you have been in setting your goals for the upcoming year. We will continue to
pray for you daily as you strive to attain your goals in 2017 and become more like the Savior.

Much Love and admiration to the best missionaries on the Earth's great face

the lesson with them this coming
Saturday.

I've felt that 2016 was a great

year. I'm so privileged to say that
I spent that whole year
dedicating all of my heart,
might, mind and strength to the
lord. Service has been the key to
my happiness in my mission. I
have an absolute love for
serving other people. And I
personally have the opinion that
this is the best type of service I
could be doing right now. This is
a selfless work. How much I've

mission is incredible! And I feel
that
it's

We

our
great
investigator family, Elemina,

Carlos, and Kevin, and they are

still soaking it all in like a sponge.
They had a baptismal date set
for the 13th of January but didn't
come to church on Sunday.
Because of the mission guideline
of needing to come to church
at least twice before your
baptism, they won't be able to
get baptized that day. But,
were meeting with them
tomorrow so hopefully we'll talk
about it and set another date!
They're so prepared, they just
need to come to church!

This coming week will be Luis'

baptism. We finished teaching
all of the commandments, and
he has accepted all of them,
we are very excited for him. He
will be a great addition to the
group, being the only active
priesthood holding man who
lives in the city of ______; all of
the other priesthood men live in
a pueblo nearby.

We have an investigator
named Adrian who agreed to
baptism on January 28th! He is
a miracle that I will tell you
about. Anyhow our first lesson
with him was just marvelous.
The spirit of God was burning
within all of us. That's when I
knew that there was potential-because of the testifying power
of the Holy Ghost. I have faith
that on the 28th of November a
man who needs change in his
life will become the happiest
man
alive
through
the
redemptive
and
enabling
power of Jesus Christ, and will
become a choice son of God.
