Security
Variouspotentialattacksonthebitcoinnetworkanditsuseasapaymentsystem,realortheoretical,havebeenconsidered.Thebitcoinprotocolincludes
severalfeaturesthatprotectitagainstsomeofthoseattacks,suchasunauthorizedspending,doublespending,forgingbitcoins,andtamperingwiththe
blockchain.[46]Otherattacks,suchastheftofprivatekeys,requireduecarebyusers.

Unauthorizedspending
Unauthorizedspendingismitigatedbybitcoin'simplementationofpublicprivatekeycryptography.WhenAlicesendsabitcointoBob,Bobbecomes
thenewownerofthebitcoin.EveobservingthetransactionmightwanttospendthebitcoinBobjustreceived,butshecannotsignthetransactionwithout
theknowledgeofBob'sprivatekey.[13]

Doublespending
Aspecificproblemthataninternetpaymentsystemmustsolveisdoublespending,wherebyauserpaysthesamecointotwoormoredifferent
recipients.AnexampleofsuchaproblemwouldbeifEvesentabitcointoAliceandlatersentthesamebitcointoBob.Thebitcoinnetworkguards
againstdoublespendingbyrecordingallbitcointransfersinaledger(theblockchain)thatisvisibletoallusers,andensuringforalltransferredbitcoins
thattheyhaven'tbeenpreviouslyspent.[13]:4

Historymodification
Theotherprincipalwaytostealbitcoinswouldbetomodifyblockchainledgerentries.
Forexample,EvecouldbuysomethingfromAlice,likeasofa,byaddingasignedentrytotheblockchainledgerequivalenttoEvepaysAlice100
bitcoins.Later,afterreceivingthesofa,Evecouldmodifythatblockchainledgerentrytoreadinstead:EvepaysAlice1bitcoin,orreplaceAlice's

Topreventmodificationattacks,eachblockoftransactionsthatisaddedtotheblockchainincludesacryptographichashcodethatiscomputedfrom
thehashofthepreviousblockaswellasalltheinformationintheblockitself.Whenthebitcoinsoftwarenoticestwocompetingblockchains,itwill
automaticallyassumethatthechainwiththegreatestamountofworktoproduceitisthevalidone.Therefore,inordertomodifyanalreadyrecorded

Eachblockthatisaddedtotheblockchain,startingwiththeblockcontainingagiventransaction,iscalledaconfirmationofthattransaction.Ideally,
