INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND
PPMO has decided to conduct a Tractor/EL demonstration in Germany using a M.A.N .
10 ton truck that has been shortened and converted into a tractor configuration
and an Ml27 trailer which will be modified and loaded to simulate the PII
erector 1aunche r.
A request has been made to the appropriate people in Germany to select areas
in which to conduct the demonstration tha t are representative Of the areas in
which .Pershing is presently deployed .
A P1a M757/EL will be put through the same demonstration for comparison purposes.
8.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this demonstration is to demonstrate the performance capabilities
of the M.A. N. tractor as a prime mover of a (simulated) PI! tactically loaded
erector launcher.

TEST OPERATIONS
A.
GENERAL
This demonstration will be conducted at preselected locations that closely
si mulate or duplicate the terrain and conditions encountered during tactical
exercises. The demonstration will utilize the M757/EL Pla tactical load and
the M.A.N. - Ml27 trailer simulating the PII erector launcher .tactical load.
If time permits, the tractors will be switched and the demonstration conducted again except that the M.A.N. - Pla EL will not be driven through the
mud. Data will be recorded on sheets as shown in Figures l and 2.
B.
DEMO"JSTRATION
l. The right angle intersection of two 24-foot wide roadways can be marked
off on a level paved area with tape or any suitable materi~1. The
tractor-trailer will attempt to negotiate this inter~ection in one pass.
lhe area of interest is the wheel track, curb to curb. Overhang is of
academic interest only. This will be documented with motion pictu res .
2. 1he paved road demo nstration will be used to determine the top speed
of both loads . The distance required to reach top speed i s not a factor.
Motion pictures will be taken.
3. The secondary road demonstration is to determine handling characteristics
over unpaved roads through hilly terrain at speeds up to and including
30 MPH. Motion pictures will be taken.
4. The gradability sl ope demonstration should be conducted on a s lope or hill
of 20% grade. The tractor-trailer will negotiate the slope fr~m a standing
start at the bottom of the slope. Ti me, di stance, and top s pee d will be
recorded. Motion pictures will be taken .
5. The mud demonstration should be conducted as follows:
Prepare 3 mud sites of 100" in length and 20' \<Jide. The mud
depth in t he first .site s hould be 4" to 6",deep, 8" to 12"
deep in the second site, and 14'' to 18" deep in the third s ite.
Eac~ configuration, M757-Pla EL, M.A.N.-Ml c7 PII load, and
M757-Ml27 PII load will be driven through the mud 3 time s. On
the third pass, stop in the middle of each mud site, then
attempt to 9rive out. This will continue with each configuration,
with the mud getting progres sively deeper until a no-go condition
is reached.
